Pick 29: Shai Bolton

Same here and like many others - SEN has become irrelevant to me too. But re Mince; I agree with your comments. But firstly, I want to ask what actually qualifies Mince to be respected or even noted as an AFL commentator? Mostly the commentariat consists of mostly great former players (although the definition of 'great' being quite arguable). Then there's a handful of AFL or wider sports commentators who may call the game and insert some opinion or pose questions and views.

But, as far as I know, Mince has no AFL playing career of distinction to qualify in the first respect. (Really cannot imagine him playing myself)
No, he seems to draw upon kudos as a sports journalist, one of the 2nd category, thereby qualified to make analytical comment. As you say, " ... serious ABC sports presenter and a journalist."

However, the first and foremost attribute of such a professional is OBJECTIVITY. But Whately disproves this qualification frequently - both by his RFC prejudice and along with his Geelong rose-coloured glasses bias.

Such a poser in the end - full of self-importance only.
Loves replaying his own commentary (Bruce McAvaney wannabee sound in exciting moments) a lot too.

Let's see if Pinoccio calls out Dangerflop with that side kick to the WC players face.
I bet he dosent even mention it
Nor the eyegouge earlier. The kid (Ginbey) copped an eyegouge and a kick to the ribs in succession, one way to stop your opposing tagger from getting in the way...

Don’t really blame him for supporting a team and letting it show. Not the best look but there are only a few who don’t. (Daisy, Darcy, Hudson and even Richo all pretty objective).
What really irritates is that he is such an apologist for Gill and the AFL Commission. Feeds off their secrets and supports them come what may.
No thanks.

How was Dimma petulant as he just got sick of journos implying Lynch was in trouble, which turned out to be there was nothing in it?

Was Hinkley petulant last night telling all to stop criticising Horney? Chris Scott has been worse at this. It's the way coaches feel straight after a game especially a loss.

It's got nothing at to do with the content, it's about the approach.

Hinkley had something to say so he said it. The equivalent of what Hardwick did would have been to say 'Who is Jason Horne-Francis? Don't know what you're talking about. Did the commentators say his name? I've heard them, they're ordinary.'

Leaders have to live the behaviours they demand. You can't demand your players be disciplined and controlled on the field and then let your own frustrations take over when you are the one under the pump.

Your last comment sums up the issues we have. Giving an out to poor behaviour because it is too hard to avoid it.

No idea what you're saying. So, Dimma can't say what he wants to say to the media about sticking up for his own player and yet Hinkley can??

It's not the content of what he said, it's the way he behaved. Playing childish games of I don't know what you're talking about and weird blanket whacks about commentators he then has to take back later.

All he needs to say is 'I thought there was nothing in the incident and I'll be surprised if Tom Lynch faces any sanctions for it'. That's the disciplined approach, if he wants it from his players he should live that standard as well.

Ok, but he's not like this constantly. I've seen Bevo and Chris Scott do worse more times. He's been more positive than negative in the past with the media (ala Mrs Hardwick in the past and other funny stuff he brings up at times)

People have openly questioned if Bevo is off the rails as well. Chris Scott I would say is much more business like in the way he handles media.

I reckon you'd be surprised if you went back over it with Hardwick, working the media has never been a strength.

Funny how Chris Scott features in a lot of petulant gestures in the coaches box though. Many gifs now. His calming down shows he WAS aware of it.

100% he did, he was an arsehat in the box. But he recognised it and could see it was a poor standard to set when he was asking his players to be disciplined. Hardwick needs to do the same.

Can’t be over critical.
He is a great coach.

Reasonable to challenge the truth behind
the question, ‘don’t accept that ….

Not so cool to be critical of the speaker or others, because when such criticism is part of the reply to a question, the journalist will have been taught to leap in and try and further provoke.

His call of the 2017 grand final was excellent. He has expertise in calling football games

Maybe so, but he goes far beyond calling in his editorial commentary where he thinks he has the role of a hanging judge. I know many of the AFL media are going to cast opinions on player indiscretions, but Whately's are often just way wrong, and coloured by bias IMO - see his 'verdicts' on Lynch and Shai most recently. I have not seen anything like that degree of condemnation (venom) applied to Moggs players unacceptable acts such as Hawkins, Selwood or Danger.

I have seen some media (unnamed) speculating atm on a 6 week ban for young Caminti's hit on Murphy for instance, which was instigated by Murphy. I prefer the commentators to err on the side of caution/understatement than take such condemnatory positions. Richo is always very 'kind' for example, because he has actually played the game passionately and knows how players are in the fire of battle.

But Mince is too closely aligned with Gil and AFL positions, which would be no doubt at Jabber the Hutch's orders, who knows where his $$$ are to be made.
I find a distinct lack of objectivity overall. I know many of the former players may show bias for their old club, but they are in a different role and the best ones call it more honestly and critically. Mince is a Geesook tragic.

There goes the weasel again: "Bolton should have been cited". What about your loverboy Dangerbrain with a leg to the throat moron!!!!

Look at the difference in the media-generated outcry, including Mince and Co, compared to when Toby Greene did similar. Dangerflop is a serial offender too.

I came onto this thread to read about Shai Bolton ;)
Anyway to me it is time to put it to Shai. I want him and Dusty in the guts for centre bounces on Monday night . We can use Hopper and Taranto for around the ground clearances but it’s time to go head to head with Oliver and Petracca in the middle with our A team.
