Brownlow 2023

Aside from the close finish that was probably the worst Brownlow Ive ever watched.

Ch7 in the post show review would have to be appealed with how lifeless it was. Hamish was on Mogadon and seemed to be completely off his game. Bec Madden looked as bad as she performed. Like she was dragged forcibly to the event. And the overall production quality was rubbish.

The amount of ridiculous votes given is going close to making it an irrelevant award. The AFLPA and Coaches Award mean more.

Agree, the worst. First Brownlow winner who just about admitted he wasn't expecting to win and came unprepared. IMO, the dumb stupid flogs bumbled the votes someway.

Has to be looked at as to how this award is voted on. Its becoming a meaningless award.

Article on the AFL site about how many votes went against what the coaches voted. These were only the outliers, but there were many more.

Just shows that 4 umpires on the field, have no idea whatsoever of what is going on around them.

The Brownlow is footys most boring night. I tuned in at rd 19 to watch the last few rounds being called then turned off after Neale had one.

Turned on at Rd 21.
Turned off when Gulden didn't get 3 votes for his 42 touches.

The Brownlow has become irrelevant.

The AFL have changed anything and everything in football so what’s so hard about putting a more reliable and relevant voting system in place that: a) doesn’t dole out so much silly voting and; b) doesn’t just make it a midfielders medal either ?

How does it hurt you? Serious question?
Well a fair few local young ones been chopped up by the Afro Bros over the last few years and by all accounts many in the force get wasted by the Afros in the hood in the states. Don't see a big public outrage thing happening with that.

WTF has that in anyway have anything to do with a Welcome to Country in Australia?

Same top 6 so not much variance really. Neale had a better year than many thought

The nincompoops at afl house will want to install another umpire, just to do the Brownlow voting

Agree Reds.

The first problem with the Brownlow is the 3, 2, 1 voting system. The best player on the ground is not 3 times better than the third best. The second best is not twice as good as the third best. Everyone else is not worth zero. Plenty of other players made worthwhile contributions.

It has always been warped.

What makes it worse now is the cult of personality that has crept in over the last few years. Dangerfield, Pendlebury, Martin, Neale, Bont, Selwood, Fyfe, Swan, Judd etc etc get the three votes because of who they are. High profile equals several threes, low profile equals more ones and twos.

Each year, the top ten placegetters seem to be getting more and more votes. Last night’s count was the most concentrated in history. We are almost at a stage where in each game, the highest profile player from the winning team is automatically going to get three votes, almost by default.

The coaches award, where five players are nominated by each coach is a better system. Of course, nobody wants to see a Brownlow count that lasts three times as long!

Is the first time I have EVER fallen asleep during a. Row low presentation.
I do agree the votes were quite dodgy a fair few times and players with reputations tend to get noticed more, however 5e syste, should not change. Is and always has been and always should be an umpires award. Plenty of other awards form other judges.

Hope the umpires take some lessons away for future voting.

The anomalies in several rounds have been dissected so much that the result will always have an asterisk on it in people’s minds. That’s unfair to the blameless Neale (and, to his credit, he was a bit embarrassed) but there was greater unfairness to Bontempelli.
