Cannot believe the reaction to one poor game. And ultimately one poor half.

The guy has been fantastic for the club. All of a sudden it's been a disastrous recruitment and set us back years?

Expect a lot of backtracking here next week.

to be clear, I think hes a great Footballer. Not a one week knee jerk at all.

but we bought him and hopper to win the 2023 premiership.

I was all for it.

It didn't work.

could have pulled it off, but for Lynch and Gibkardashian breaking down.

was worth a crack.

what now? the game gets quicker and quicker, and ball use is back in fashion.

these pair will get slower and slower, and neither can kick

and when our window opens again (best case scenario we draft a CHF this year to build a side around get games into him - 4-5 years),

these blokes are 31.

I think it made perfect sense to recruit them,

now I think it makes perfect sense to cash out.

trade for picks, grab blue chip CHF and quick mids

both will hold appeal to young sides with windows variously opening (Saints, Port, Crows, Gold Coast, Freo, Hawks, North)

a top 5 pick for Taz, a late first round for Hopper.

Should be able to craft a win; win;win

we get draft picks to assemble a premiership cohort; a building side adds bluechip midfield grunt; the players get a chance to win a flag

take the hit, get it over with, move forward

jack ross and jack graham take heat off the developing kids in the guts for 4-5 years, on half the money

This is the Taranto thread, not the Taranto and Hopper thread. Hopper criticism should be in his thread.

disagree, threads aren't vacuums.

and like it or not, these pair are culturally like siamese twins.

same age, same deal, arrived together from the same club for the same reason, neither dynastical, both highly unlikely to play in a premiership with status quo, nor represent us in the GF sprint.

me? Ive embrace change; im keeping ahead of the curve. Ive Dosey-doed over to the Darkside for a year or two (well 5 days at least)

there's a time and place for most things

Disagree to your disagree. Rubbish to your rubbish. Think you've sunk too much carter kool-aid.

Let's see what sort of response we get from the side in the next 6-8 weeks before we meekly submit for 2024.

fair enough

but I dont really want spirited responses. our list is in terrible shape, as you'd 100% expect post dynasty.

I want to tank against west coast to get Jagga Smith,

and get the party started again ASAP.

and I get why thats a disagreeable position.

Who takes Hopper and what message does that send to other players from outside the club?

He has currency.

the message it sends is dont go to Richmond unless your quick and can kick.

nobody decent is coming to Richmond for 3-4 years anyway, by which time everyones forgotten we traded out with 5 years to run.

hit the draft relentlessly.

Melbournes Grundy experiment is the template.

shrewd; failed; cut loss

Maybe Sydney? Taylor Adams turns 31 this year. Maybe Essington, they have a lightweight midfield.

See Ezy's response to the message. Collingwood suffering no ill-effects from the terrible way they treated Treloar and Grundy. Like everything else, we can do it better than them.

Everything you just said.

For me there’s no concern left about trading away any heart and soul from the club when players, coaches and now administrators are moving on.

It’s time to rebuild folks; not on the fly, or subtly, but starting with knocking down all the wonky walls that aren’t standing up straight or couldn’t support any weight in the first place and re-stumping the joint so the foundations are solid.

At this point every senior player is on the table for me.

And let’s get as many games into any of the kids that we think have a glimmer of hope as quickly as possible.

Dusty, Danny, $hai and obviously Gibcus are off the table for me.

and any triple premiership players must consent

This repetitive mantra of play the kids is getting on my goat. Apart from one or two the kids recruited in the last few years are a bust and didn’t look like footballers then and do not look like and play AFL footballers now.

Hardwick’s grand plan post 2020 was flawed as the game past him by along with the majority of his young recruits.

Season 2024 has just begun - every player on the list deserves a shot in theory and those that put their bodies on the line each game certainly deserve to be wearing the jumper.

I’m more interested now to see how the new coach responds to the challenges of the list he mostly inherited from Hardwick.

Starting with team selection for the Carlton game.

I see what you both are saying.

I just don’t like the logic of chasing a player then getting rid of him two seasons in. It’s a horrible look.

It’s unfortunate the bloke who wanted this is now enjoying the Gold Coast sun.

What I want to see is an injection of youth surrounded by strong leaders.

Thursday’s selection is the focus for me. If we go in with the same midfield mix we are stuffed. Bring in Mcaullife. Get Bolton as your first rover, supported by Martin and Taranto. Drop Naismith and Ryan. Get speed back in the team. Make Balta as our first ruck. Let Nank bash into McKay when he goes in there. Give Grimes a rest and bring in Brown or Trezise. Mix it up.

Yeah i get that.

The thing is though - they may have been aold the dream of playing under hardwick and winning premierships

And may be thinking '*smile*, its gonna be a long 6 years'

And looking longingly at St.Kildas list

At 26, they can have it all. Security, $ 3/4m a year AND a premiership medal.

Its not inconceivable they wont get the latter at tigerland,

But theylle be in their 30's

hardwick really did make off like a bandit.

If walter and read are as good as i suspect,

Dimma could well end up with another 2-3 flags.

Very crafty man our dimma

Taranto was rubbish Saturday- not quite Dow level rubbish, but few could be.
But he was great last year- not just good but great.

His kicking cops flack, and at times it is not pretty, but he was still in the top 25 for score involvements amongst midfielders, just 1 score involvement per game off being about top 5. Kicking to a forward line that had Marlon Pickett playing CHF for most of the year.

If plays like Saturday again, the spotlight should come, but at this stage he is just a very good mid who had a shocking game.

Agreed on Danny, $hai and Gibcus.

Dusty is an interesting one as the Tigers won't be playing in a GF whilst he's still playing, and I assume he is a free agent very soon anyway?

I'm wobbly on the triple premiership players consenting; I'm sure these things can be handled in a professional manner if / when the time comes.
