Umpire farce - Getting worse by the minute!

Its very fluid now. Sometimes they say dtand sometimes they dont. Sometimes you can back off sometimes you cant. Mostly depends if Tigers are playing.
Yep. Sometimes they're red hot, sometimes loose as buggery, and if you're geelong you can wander a few metres over the mark before they call stand, and then you don't really have to stand anyway. Sometimes outside 5 is the actual mark, sometimes its 5 metres, sometimes its 10 or 15. The mark went from being very simple to a complicated schemozzle, thanks to a Hocking having a vendetta.

They let players get flung around in a tackle for ages, don't blow the whistle, and, lo and behold, the player being tackled is eventually flung to the ground. There was one this week, can't remember which game, but the tackler is now suspended for a week. They should suspend the umpires for creating the situation, they let this go for too long. The rules state that if the player has had prior opportunity they must dispose of the ball legally, if they don't, it is holding the ball. The rule is not that difficult for supposedly the best umpires available, the grossly inconsistent interpretation of the rules is the problem.

Yeh, it's different for every umpire in every game. Some call stand straight away. Some don't. You see players penalised for backing off the mark after the stand call. Sometimes you don't. You see players run from behind the mark to stand on it and not get penalised 50. Then sometimes they do get penalised 50. Sometimes the umpires call play on immediatley when the player with the ball is clearly off his line, sometimes they don't. Sometimes the player on the mark moves before the play on call (actually this is happening more and more) and the umpires don't penalise it. One thing for sure is the whole stand thing has got very lax compared to a couple of years ago.

Previously you just had to be behind the mark, and all the umpire had to do was make sure you didn't go over it. You could go side to side, just don't go over that spot. It was pretty simple. Now there's 100 different things the umpire is tryng to manage.

Yeah but look at all the extra Dusty Moments it creates. Like the time Dusty gave away a tiggy touchwood 50. Or when he chipped a 15 metre pass to an unmanned teammate. Champagne football.

tested my theory of ch7 bastardry today and watched swans academy rort beat gold coast academy rort

I muted the commentary and played an Ernest ranglin playlist.

actually enjoyed the game. umpiring seemed ok.

seemed like a game of footy.

small sample,

but I reckon its bt and jb and other fuckheads contributing significantly to the unwatchability.

give it a go.
Great post Ezy
Further to that..
How smart would it be if Fox offered a ‘sounds of the game’ setting where you could mute the commentary but just listen to the umpires, players & crowd?

They used to do this 20 years ago.

That's exactly what I would listen to
Problem (for broadcasters) is it would make it pretty clear which commentators viewers don't want to listen to, and they wouldn't be able to call each other "best in the business" anymore

Is 7 put this option up on 7Mate or something, it would be interesting to see which version rated better on certain nights

Its the modus operandi of the AFL. Its an objective performance review-free zone. Once you're in with the boys its backslapping city. Remember Gary Lyon, Simon Lethlean? Remember how the official AFL media line was how impoverished all our lives would be if these fantastic irreplaceable blokes were lost to the game?

Problem is there are too many rules and they are too complicated. KISS.

some suggestions would be to get rid of stand rule, get rid of insufficient intent, get rid of protected zone, get rid of chopping arms in the marking contest, get rid of kicks needing to travel 15, get rid of dissent (suck it up princess), get rid of the ball being touched whether for a mark or a goal, if ball hits the post and goes through goals it is a goal, if goes through behinds it is a behind, get rid of the Bowden rule, handballs over the head are all a thro.

Trial it in VFL for rest of the season.

Yeah, I laugh when I hear one of these *smile* wits say “good luck, have a good call” to another of their backslapper commentators.

Just call the game, instead of trying to be a celebrity. Bloody goldfish brain pud pullers.

Have a good call? Seriously? They’re commentating a game of footy, how badly can you have a call……

It‘d be like if I went for a walk around the park with my wife and she turn to me and say “ok Tim, have a good walk”

So a one-metre kick could be 'marked'?

I humbly suggest bringing back the 15m penalty with a sliding scale for different offences...surely simple enough to manage for an organisation that loves rules like the AFL.

Remonstrating with umpire: 15m
Moving on mark after being told to stand: 25m
Professional foul/impeding a player: 35m
Late hit: 50m
'Good bloke' discount: 20% discount on penalty paid

Well you could always step in a pot hole n roll your ankle or rip an achilles n then the missus would have to help you gimp all the way back home. Might not be such a bad idea to wish you a good walk.
