Well, the season could have started better for Richmond, as well as myself. After getting hyped up for the return of footy I left home from the surf coast at around 4.15pm and jumped on the V-Line train from Marshall station. The train was evacuated at Geelong due to a "small fire in one of the carriages". I called up my travelling companion and they picked me up from Geelong, putting us 30 minutes behind schedule. Having accepted that we would miss farewelling Richo, we hoped to make it in time to see the opening bounce. Arriving at the West Gate Bridge at 6.20, we figured we would be cutting it fine, however we couldn't have foreseen the fun that was to commence! Long story short, we sat down in our normal reserved seats at 8.30pm, just after the half time siren! I could see the 'G for the whole first half, but had to listen to the proceedings on the radio as we sat in gridlock and then struggled to find a car park. Thus, my votes and my report for round 1 are based on listening to the radio, watching the second half live and watching the Fox Sports replay a couple of times.

We arrived at the 'G to hear a massive roar as Mitch Morton kicked a goal on the half time siren to bring Richmond back to within 19 points. This capped off an inconsistent first half in which Richmond let Carlton kick multiple goals in a row, to claw back to within striking distance, only to let them pull away again. There were plenty of promising signs in the first half for the Tigers as they endeavoured to implement Hardwick's new gameplan. At times you could see the method in the apparent madness, but the old, familiar skill errors and inaccuracy in front of goals would prove costly and maintain a healthy margin for the Blues throughout the first half.

The second half saw the errors increase and the Blues blow the margin out as the young Tiger squad tired in the high temperatures of the autumn evening. The final quarter was completely one sided as the Tigers failed to apply any real pressure, failed to record a goal and watched the final margin stretch out to 50+ points.

In my opinion, there weren't any Tigers that really excelled on the night. The voters this week awarded the best Tiger on ground to Dan Jackson, for, as Tigerbob put it so well, "the warrior aspects to his game". He certainly put in his all and really attempted to impose himself on the contest. If he can continue to work on his disposal and decision making he will have an important role to play in the Tiger midfield going forward ( ;)). The other high vote pollers this week were Riewoldt, who was the most dangerous big forward on the ground for the evening. He worked hard, took some very strong contested marks and kicked straight for goal. Unfortunately the supply to our forward line was minimal, so his opportunities were few and far between. He looks like he could be set for a very good year, if we can apply more pressure in the midfield, utilise the corridor and increase our inside 50s. Finally, Dan Connors looks to have found his role as the sweeper in the backline. His good skills, dash and (usually) good decision making seem to make him ideal for the role. As long as he can keep the showboating to a minimum and increase his defensive workrate further he looks like he is ready to cement a place in the senior side.

This week sees the Tigers take on the Bulldogs for a Sunday twilight clash at the 'G. I am sure we are all bracing ourselves for a Dogs side that will be extremely hungry after suffering a loss in round 1. However, it will provide our young side with a chance to take on one of the favourites for the flag and I will be there to watch them in their development (hopefully I'll arrive before half time this week!).

Welcome back everyone!

Carn' the Tiges!
