Re: PRE Player of the Year 2010 - AWARDS NOW POSTED!

Welcome to the 2010 Punt Road End Player of the Year Awards thread.

The Tigers went into the 2010 season with many scribes in the media pessimistic about their chances. With the retirement of a number of veterans at the end of 2009 including Nathan Brown, Joel Bowden and, of course, the irreplaceable Matty Richardson, the side certainly had a different ‘feel’ about it. This was coupled with the appointment of a new coach in Damien Hardwick, with the resulting new game plan and a raft of new, young faces. This mixture of inexperience, youth and the necessary adjustment to Dimma’s style of play had expectations set low.

As it turns out, the doomsdayers predictions appeared to be accurate, in the worst possible way. As the season began the Tigers struggled to play competitively and were regularly beaten by 50+ points. The media and some PREnders even began predicting a winless season and one betting agency paid out on the Tigers to win the wooden spoon after only a few rounds. The mood surrounding the Tigers was ridiculously negative and comparisons with Fitzroy during its pitiful final season were rife. However, all communication from the club was positive and unwavering.

It took a drenching day in Adelaide to turn things around as the Tigers earned their first victory in the mudpatch formerly known as AAMI Stadium against Port Adelaide. The Tigers played great contested footy on the day and after 9 losses in a row the Tigers had 4 premiership points. This victory also seemed to hearken in a new attitude as the Tigers defied their critics to win 5 of their next 8 games, curiously all against interstate sides. All of the sudden the Tigers were the media’s love child and the talk was all about how bright the future was for the young side. As it turns out a combination of injuries and a tiring young side meant that the team only won 1 of their last 7 games, again against an interstate side in Adelaide in a freak hailstorm at the ‘G.

Overall, a season that started so poorly ended on a pretty positive note. So much so that there were some media commentators recommending Dimma for coach of the year. I am excited about watching the Tigers continue their development in the expanded competition in 2011.

With the season wrap done, let’s get down to business. The 2010 PRE Player of the Year saw 1193 ballots cast over the 22 rounds. This is up by about 2% (24 votes) on the 1169 ballots cast in 2009. The trend we saw in 2009 wherein the average number of voters dropped off in the second half of the season continued in 2010, although not quite so pronounced. In the first half of the 2010 season an average of 57.3 PREnders voted, whereas in the second half this average dropped to 50.8. The most popular round, as usually appears to be the case, was round 1 against Carlton where 80 ballots were cast and the least number of voters (36) turned out for the Rounds 17 and 20 losses to Collingwood and Carlton, respectively.

As always I like to acknowledge those who voted in all 22 rounds of the season:

Before we begin the countdown I will clarify some of the information that is provided for each Richmond player:

Total Votes The total number of votes accrued throughout the 2010 season (2009 also shown).

Rounds Played The number of games played in the 2010 season (2009 also shown).

Historic Position The players position in previous PRE Player of the Year polls (NOL = Not on List; DNP = Did Not Place)

Average Votes/Round Total votes accrued / total games played

Highest Ranking (Round(s)) The highest ranking achieved and the round(s) that ranking was held.

Best Round (Votes) The round in which the player obtained the highest number of votes, which opponent the Tigers played in that round and the number of votes obtained.

Normalised Score (Rank) A score that normalises the votes to take out the ‘number of voters’ factor. This scoring system prevents players obtaining votes in ‘popular’ weeks from gaining an advantage. This is not official and just for your information. Theoretical maximum score is 100 – a player that got 3 votes on every ballot would score 100.

Richmond ‘Brownlow’ Votes (Ranking) This is also unofficial and for your information. It consists of a 3-2-1 voting system each week. This ranking tends to benefit players who are consistently in the top 3 players of the week.

Most Votes From The PRE member(s) who supplied the player with the most votes and how many.

Can I ask that everyone refrain from replying to this post until the awards ceremony is complete

Now with the formalities out of the way, let the 2010 countdown begin!

Nick was drafted to the Tigers in the 2009 Rookie Draft as a key position project player. To be honest, I didn’t get the chance to see Nick play this year and some of the keen Coburg watchers would be better placed to assess his progress this year. If I am not mistaken, Nick played most of the season in the Coburg reserves. As a first year project KPP I would expect Nick to remain on the rookie list as he continues his physical development in 2011 and presses for a regular spot in the senior Coburg line-up.

Pat Contin was another player taken in the 2009 Rookie Draft and was selected as a developing midfielder. Reports on Pat from the Coburg-viewers have been mostly positive as he made his way from the reserves to finish out the season with the Coburg seniors. If the reports are accurate it would seem that Pat is one to persevere with as he has shown good progress this year and with some physical development could add some added depth to our midfield stocks. It would be a surprise if he didn’t continue on the rookie list in 2011.

Alroy continued for a second season on the Richmond rookie list in 2010 and played the season out at Coburg. Like the rest of the Coburg crew, I wasn’t able to see much of Alroy this season, however word on PRE suggested that he had a few issues early in the season that required his absence from the club for some time. He did return and play out the season at Coburg, however his form did not warrant elevation off the rookie list and he might struggle to retain his spot on the list in 2011.

Jordan McMahon had the ignominious honour of being the only senior-listed Richmond player not to play a game in 2010. It is not completely clear why this was the case, whether he was on the outer from the outset with the new coaching panel, whether he didn’t put in the effort at Coburg, or a bit of both, it is clear that he won’t be with the Tigers in 2011. Reports from Coburg were less than stellar and he never really came close to playing a match for Richmond. In his three seasons he went from playing 22 games in 2008 and finishing 14th in the PRE Player of the Year, to 12 in 2009 for a 25th placed finish, to not featuring at all. An unfortunate, steady decline for a player whom Wallace clearly paid over the odds for. Best of luck in your future endeavours Jordy.

Relton Roberts was a 2009 rookie selection and one of the new faces at Tigerland in 2010. A mature-age pick from the Northern Territory he showed good enough form in the preseason to warrant an elevation to the senior list to play in Round 1 vs Carlton. Unfortunately, Relton never really adjusted to life in Melbourne and after featuring in only 2 games in the Yellow and Black, he decided to head back north to reassess. It was always going to be a bit of punt for the club to take a mature-aged, indigenous player from interstate and clearly it didn’t pay off this time. However, that is what the rookie list should be used for, IMO: to uncover the occasional gem. Sad to say, Relton doesn’t appear to be that gem (at least for the Tigers).

After Graham’s horrific 2008 accident there were great doubts that he would ever be able to play AFL footy again. To his credit, Graham came back to play the final 2 games of 2009 and after delisting him Richmond picked him up as a mature aged rookie for 2010. Elevated early in the season, Graham didn’t play until round 7 and although he didn’t rack up big numbers his size and marking ability helped straighten the Tiger’s structure up. After suffering a few sickening knocks while playing in the VFL Graham announced his retirement from senior footy. Fittingly his final game of 2010 was the Tiger’s first victory of the season against Port Adelaide. Graham’s return to play footy at the highest level after such a nasty injury is a great testament to his courage and will and I wish him the best in the future.

Matt Dea was taken by the Tigers at pick 44 in the 2009 national draft and made his senior debut in round 4 against the Demons. Matt is a late-comer to the game, however he appears to be fearless, is certainly athletic and has a big frame that will clearly bulk up further as he matures. Matt looked a bit out of his depth in the seniors and will need to work on his decision making, ability to read the play and keeping up with the pace of the game. Further development at Coburg will give us a better idea of his future prospects. Unfortunately, a foot injury kept him out of Richmond and Coburg for the second half of the 2010 season, so that development will have to wait until next season.
