I would say ridiculously good. His handle is off the charts. One-touch gather and give. In-out-gone.He seems to be pretty good at ground level, there's plenty to work with on that front.
I like VC’s on ballers a bit better. Think they bat a bit deeper than Met. Hopefully we see a Hayes-Cadman matchup.VC for me.
Wouldn’t that make it harder to get a kick? If he the key target he might have kicked 55.Van Rooyen has done very well and good luck to him but he has played in a very dominant experienced team with the likes of Mitch Brown, Sam Weidemann and Tom McDonald in the forward line with him so that certainly would of helped. I bet Jacob Bauer would of loved that luxury even though I still think he is a third leading forward rather than a key position player.
I heard similar coming from the Wilmont side.Heard from a strong source that we really wanted Darcy Wilmont with our 2nd pick.
It's certainly is a balancing act.Gibcus & Sonsie is a good nucleus to work with, I also think Judson looks AFL quality, Matthew Clarke already gets a pass mark for this draft but the question of key position talent is still one which cannot be neglected however, Jack has one year left, Lynch will be the wrong side of 30 next year, Grimes also approaching retirement age. All of Jackson's key position talent about to disappear from view leaving the cupboard relatively bare. Now assuming that talls take 4 years & we're about to wipe out 2 drafts, I'm feeling a bit nervous about what the future may hold, it's one of the reasons I'm adamant about keeping our pick 12 this year (at a bare minimum). If we're serious about the future then it's at least 1 key position talent, ideally 2. That won't happen of course, we're committed to Taranto & Hopper, unless we have a rabbit up the sleeve it will be left up to Hartley to address, he definitely has his work cut out.
Casey also dominated the season, losing 1 game all yr.Van Rooyen has done very well and good luck to him but he has played in a very dominant experienced team with the likes of Mitch Brown, Sam Weidemann and Tom McDonald in the forward line with him so that certainly would of helped. I bet Jacob Bauer would of loved that luxury even though I still think he is a third leading forward rather than a key position player.
JH & TT also will lead our midfield while the younger guys develope. Otherwise Ross & Sonsie will more or less need to be our 2nd & 3rd mids inside next yr if Graham takes Lamberts role given his tank, by the time Finals roll around they'll be just about cooked for the yr. These 2 we are bringing in allow them to take lesser rolls which helps them run out the season as well as long term. Then there's the issue of what happens when Prestia is out next yr (which seems inevitable at some stage sadly) without the 2 guys coming in. I agree we need talls as well tho it seems we can't do both at once if we want to get back to contention next yr. Curious to see how the trade plays out, tho we'll have to use later kicks if we want to grab any talls (which IMO we need to draft talls & it sounds as tho we will) but it's a matter of the Drafts depth in this area which i have no idea of.It's certainly is a balancing act.
As you say we have Riewoldt for one more year, Grimes will 32 next year and Lynch 30 next month, with Tarrant 34 next year.
The young talls that we currently have are, Balta, Miller, Gibcus, Ryan, Nyuon, Bauer, Colina.
In regards to our midfielders, Edwards and Lambert have retired, with Cotchin to retire next year, Martin turned 31 a couple of months ago, and Prestia turns 30 next month and is injury prone.
The young midfielders we have are Shai and Graham both 24, Sonsie, Ross, RCD, Martyn and Dow, with Short and to a lesser extent Baker playing midfield this year as well.
Maurice and Clarke may or may not end up playing in the midfield too.
Looking at our young talls and young midfielders, I think our midfield is more in need of attention.
I can certainly see why we are wanting to bring both Taranto and Hopper to the club. If we can get a deal done for both of them, they will be very much needed replacements for Lambert, Edwards and Cotchin the following year.
Midfield top ups are easy, the market is brimming with options, I prefer to keep the high picks & take the slow & steady approach. Once you start borrowing from the future for mids you are playing a high stakes game, moves like this are better served for talls, this seems like last chance saloon to some degree. If we have a poor 2023 the costs will be significant. It's certainly is a balancing act.

Maybe at times but getting mismatched on the third or fourth best defender would make him a pretty good target as well.Wou;dn't that make it harder to get a kick? If he the key target he might have kicked 55.

I like the upside of Max Knobel particularly, I think in combination with one of Jefferson or Keeler this would be just what the doctor ordered - all very doable if we guard pick 12.Agree with "Midfield top ups are easy, the market is brimming with options", there certainly is more of them.
With our current list of young players, I can see all of Gibcus, Ryan, Nyuon, Bauer still being on our list in a few years time, whereas out of Ross, Sonsie, RCD, Martyn and Dow, I can only see Ross and Sonsie and perhaps Dow still being there.
Our key tall stocks certainly need addressing, I just think our midfield is in more need of attention, and with Taranto and Hopper we get that immediately.
We can still bring in some talls in the upcoming draft. I was impressed with Tylar Young's progression in the VFL this year, he may be worth a rookie pick.
Are there any speculative talls that you like, who might be available with a late pick or rookie selection?
I seem to recall that I wanted Erasmus with our 1st and had no support at all!Don't forget Johnson has had an interrupted year, his breakout game came in the home & away season, has since signed a long term deal with the Dockers. Erasmus was in my list of 4 who stand to become the best player of the draft (excluding the top 2), that list also included Rachele, Johnson & Goater. All these players have shown enough in their debut season to keep the flame flickering.
Don’t start blowing the trumpets just yet!!I seem to recall that I wanted Erasmus with our 1st and had no support at all!

He was still high risk, all of the guys I mentioned carried added risk, with Erasmus it was his kicking which forced him down the order (rank 13) from memory. But if he is able to ply his trade as a midfielder then he should vindicate a top 10 selection, as a flanker not so much, with only Colts data to go by it was a situation I was happy to handball, but I wouldn't be surprised if he lands somewhere in the top handful of players.I seem to recall that I wanted Erasmus with our 1st and had no support at all!

I'd still take Gibcus by the way, haven't changed my thoughts even after 12 months.
Geez BH I think you are slightly over exaggerating comparing us to the Miller years. We havent traded a first round pick since 2016 for Prestia and last year we went all in with 5 top 30 picks.I like the upside of Max Knobel particularly, I think in combination with one of Jefferson or Keeler this would be just what the doctor ordered - all very doable if we guard pick 12.
I think trading pick 19 is fair game, this pick with a little bit of special sauce is enough to get Hopper over the line, we can then attack the shortfalls on multiple fronts without selling the farm.
This situation is starting to resemble the Miller years, an era marked by quick & easy first round horse trading, often ending in tears a few years down the track. It's very easy to forget that we had a policy of first round protectionism throughout the formative years of the Jackson era, this has served us well so I'm a little bemused that these core beliefs have now been discarded.
However you slice & dice the situation, a poor year next year has the potential to derail the rebuild, those are the stakes & I suspect there will be some added heat on the decision makers if all turns to dust.
