Bachar Houli - بشار حولي,

Sadly I don't think it will matter how good he gets, he'll be our next Tivendale for a large segment of the ferals.

Bit presumptuos dont you think? Oops forgot it was a Baloo post.

Carry on.

Totally agree!

Houli did his job, when we were winning the ball, he got on top, continually found space and created for our forwards. Was a big part in our third quarter come back.

LOL at people expecting him to be an enforcer or add to our toughness. He was recruited simply to add to our run and spread options in which we were lacking last season. He and Nahas were the only ones to continually do this for us on Thursday night. Unfortunetely we were smashed out the centre on Thursday night so he was largely ineffective. One Round in and he will improve. We won't win many games this year, so I don't expect him to get an easy ride from the ferals as when we lose they will go to the easy targets and he will be one of them. He did his job and did it well on Thursday night, he shouldn't be another singled out for our loss.

Really? Why do you say that. I think most will be very happy if he works out.
I'm just posting obs from his first game which was overall underwhelming.

I certainly don't expect him to be an enforcer but every player who goes out there would be expected to tackle and be hard at the football.
I'd be amazed if any coach expected otherwise.

Agree.

Those coming into to defend him are going a bit over the top. It's just little criticisms of his game. Not great defensive pressure and kicking was ordinary.

Not every bomber is devasted with his loss by any means. Was reading bomberblitz and came across this thread concerning his performance last Thursday night:

Bachar Houli, Who is/will regret losing him?

http://www.bomberblitz.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=60666&st=0

Certainly you would expect them to be at least as circumspect as we would be in regards to Tamblings performances at Adelaide. However they do know this player intimately, both in terms of his strengths and weaknesses, and their observations do parallel some of ours. Interesting reading.

PS. Unfortunately they have since moved this thread to a Board called 'Regurgitated' which is only accessible to members. To paraphase the consensus, the vast majority seem quite comfortable having lost him, both in general and specifically in reference to what they saw on Thursday night. Whilst some conceded that he is a ball magnet, the most common words and observations were 'one-sided, soft, lack of defensive presure and butcher (in terms of disposal both by hand and by foot)'. Some also questioned his pace. To me one quote that really stood out (which was probably the most positive about him in the entire thread) was the following from a bomberblitz member called 'Bomb Doe':

'He can find the ball, but it's hit or miss whether he'll use it well. So he's going to frustrate and polarise the Richmond supporters. Hardwick is no idiot and he knew what Houli was like. He''s better by foot than by hand and presumably his role is to kick it long into the forward line. And if he feeds Riewoldt with a 2-3 goals a game then that may be enough for Hardwick to keep him in.

He's not great, but he's not a hack either.'

No doubt he had the same polarising effect on Essendon supporters (and continues to do so now, but obviously to a far lesser degree), now it's our turn I guess.

Outside player or not the thing Bacher needs to work on is when its his turn to go he has to go.

He's far from non-negotiable in his attack on the ball. What role you play shouldn't impact on that aspect of anyone's game.

Very true, but don't make the mistake that he has to be as tough as a Martin or has to become a tackling machine.

When it is his time to go and he doesn't, i'll be right into him with everyone else. I didn't see him pull out once on Thursday.

That's about how I look at it too. He also is young enough to improve in all aspects of his game. I believe we have a solid base to work from. He could be vital in our game plan.

Unfortunately Bacher is McMahon MarkII with less pace but a more robust physique.

Wow, that must be a very big general category then that catches most players for you. Not a bit like McMahon for mine.

In nearly 100minutes of footy most players should be able to execute 1-3 tackles, and at least as many shepherds/blocks I would have thought.

Not singling out any post but looking at the knocks on him at Essendon, they mimic the frustrations many had with Tivendale. Front runner, soft, one sided. Tivvers became a favorite whipping boy for the ferals, I can see the same for Houli.

Why do you use the word "ferals"? Perhaps he can become a whipping boy for "those that demand better".

Just my personal crusade to turn the meaning of the word "ferals" from those who are considered brightsiders to those that prefer to latch onto a player and bag them no matter how they play.

What you propose is certainly a more intuitive interpretation of the word.

Is Allybabe's criticism of Rance by definition what you mean?

Or Disco's bagging of Tambling since he went to Adelaide?

Best example I can give is Redfords bagging of you.

Tough crowd. When we turned the game around have a look at how many scoring chains he was involved in.

Every one bitches about the lack of spread from the contest, Houli does it. Sure he has things to work on but he brings a lot of things to the table that will improve us right away. Sure he is not the hardest nut in town but I am yet to see outright dodge a contest.

Big plus for me that we got this type of player for nothing. Will play a lot of football in 2011. If this is the starting point for him, onwards and upwards.

Agree, the purchase price was about right for us.

We have a lot worse out there than Houli. He would slot into Hird's current outfit in a heartbeat.

He was certainly in the Bombers plans for the future.

Not happy they couldn't keep him at the club.
