Six-goal burst helps Port Melbourne steamroll Tigers

A typically whithering six-goal burst at the start of the third quarter gave Port Melbourne a comfortable win over Coburg at Punt Road Oval yesterday, 14.10 (94) to 8.17 (65).
The Borough had struggled to shake the Tigers, but a half-dozen goals in 16 minutes enabled Port Melbourne to double Coburg's score and all but ended the contest. It was a quarter in which Corey McKernan began to show welcome glimpses of form, booting two goals in the term and finishing the match with 19 possessions and nine marks.
In the fourth term, McKernan also spent time in the ruck, where he was able to feed the ball to Kangaroos Shane Clayton and Shane Harvey.
Port Melbourne dominated around the ground, amassing nearly 350 touches and prompting a gentle reprimand from coach Gerard Fitzgerald.
"The amount of the ball we got was sensational, but that efficiency rating (24.5 possessions per goal) won't get us far," Fitzgerald said.

The coach also noted that the Borough had had its highest turnover rate of the season and warned that during the run home, every team in the competition would be keen to conquer the ladder leader.
The lack of a consistent four-quarter effort is still a concern. "It's certainly holding us back. Playing our best for such a brief period of time is not enough," Fitzgerald said.
Fitzgerald had an enviable attack, which allowed him the luxury of rotating marking players McKernan, Kris Shore, Chad Jones and Josh Rudd in the goal mouth.
Coburg, on the other hand, struggled to kick goals. Shane Morrison had a forgettable day that included an invitation to the tribunal for allegedly striking David Hale. Adam Houlihan provided some spark for Coburg as he picked up 29 touches, but was wayward kicking for goal.
