Cricket

As much as I like Finch as a cricketer don't think he is a test opener ...maybe no 6 . I was so hoping he would do well too .. Renshaws form has not been great either atm (. Maybe open with Khawaja and Harris , Finch at 6 and hoping they dont bring back Mitch Marsh . Would give Handscomb another go .

Doubt much, if any change, as selectors picked squad of 14 (including MMarsh) for these 1st 2 tests. M Marsh is the only additional batsman in the squad, the other 2 are Tremain & another bowler. MM did nothing in the Shield round just completed to merit a recall (though bet Langer utching to find/create a path for him). Finch to #4, Kwahaja & Harris open.

All things considered not a bad result.
I was expecting to lose this series 0-4 and that may still eventuate, but I was also expecting big margins.
I know which team will (privately) be more satisfied with the match (if not the result) despite the public statements.

Note sure Marsh's 60 should save him.
Despite his lack of shield runs, I would have Renshaw in for Marsh, Finch or Handscomb.

And when the experts discuss a potential replacement as captain should Paine become unavailable, why does Khawaja never get a mention?
He's a state captain and probably the first batsman picked come selection.
Dare I raise the "R" word?

If there's going to be a change i'd have Burns 18, 74, 96 and 24 not out in before Renshaw 14, 27, 2 and 16 on their last two shield games.

Had lost a bit of interest in cricket in last few years, due to the quality of test wickets produced here that totally favoured batting.
This test was what test cricket should be.

Day 1 9-250, including a gutsy century.
No more than 320 in an innings.
One century maker, but still some good scores by Pujara in 2nd, Rahane, Marsh and Head.
All quicks bowled well especially Hazlewood, Bumrah and Sharma.
Lyon and Ashwin still bowled extremely well.
Flat track bullies Rahul and Sharma exposed.
Aussies exposed by the tail, that if you don’t tough out an innings you don’t get rewarded. Especially Khawaja and Handscombe. Marsh may have figured it out in 2nd innings but history suggests no.

Well done to the curator, hope all Australian groundskeeper see this as the standard. Guarantee if this was in India this would have being a road to nullify their bowling.

This is a tough start but we have made the right decisions since sandpaper gate in terms of suspension and leadership, results will hopefully eventually follow but will not be in next 12 months. The hopeful in our batting is over 12 months away in Pucosvski, Sanger, Edwards and Philippe

The bowlers cost us with their poor efforts in 2nd innings. Lyon had a patch of gold to bowl at and couldn’t hit it. Was flattered by his figures in the end.

In his presser after the game, Paine said that they've picked the squad for the first 2 tests, so even if he's injured they'll probbaly bring someone on from the existing squad to make up the numbers and have Hamdscomb keep. Khawaja's been a choice of a few as captain if Paine can't play, but Hazlewood is the vice captain along with Mitch Marsh, who is unlikely to be selected for the test in Perth, so the captaincy will more than likely go to Josh.

What’s the R word?

Good match and good contest, pleasantly surprised that we didn't get blown away.

Bowlers did their bit as expected. But batsman were very poor, lots of positive starts but an inability to make a score. Finch not the answer. Would love to see Handscombe succeed but is fatally flawed. I know the cupboard is bare but would be investing in those at least with a sound technique who with the right support may develop over a couple of years.

Ricky. Only been out of Test cricket for 6 years. Simpson missed 10.
Ah, right. Yeah nah. Paine will play Perth, no need to panic.

I think the bowlers let us down in the Indian 2nd dig. There was plenty in the pitch if you bowled the right areas. Lyon couldn't hit the rough when bowling to Pujara/Kohli and the quicks bowled too short. We should have rolled them for less than 250.

Warner and Smith helped paper over the cracks in recent years, surley its time another batting star from Oz arrives on the scene. Serious questions have to be asked about the development of batsman in this country

Apparently Ishant Sharma bowled AT LEAST 16 uncalled no-balls in the first test. In one over alone EVERY ball was a no ball!

It’s become apparent umpires aren’t looking for no balls from bowlers which is just incredible.

bigwow pointed this out suring the match. Thought he was implying that Sharma was a chucker.
