Cricket

Didn't have an issue with Archer. Not sure why he laughed, but it could've been anything.

Think they said it was the quickest spell of bowling (in England ?) since speed data has been recorded. Hostile and dangerous - It was a throwback and made for brilliant cricket.

Agree, didn't appear he was laughing at Smith to me. He's not a medical expert, he doesn't need to go down and feign care. Bowlers are trying to hit batsman, its a part of cricket that makes it so compelling. Every ball Archer delivered to Smith was unmissable.

Exactly. Too much 20/20 has people thinking fast bowlers are in it to be smashed around the park. Every great fast bowler is 50% mongrel with the ball in his hand. I loved it all, including seeing how the world's best coped when out of his comfort zone. That shot through the off side when he came back on was imperious beyond words. Magical.

How good would it be if Labuschagne after being subbed in, takes a couple of wickets and then top scores to win the test for us.

Archer has turned the Ashes on it's head (pardon the pun) he's just hit Labushagne in the head/helmet. He hasn't taken any harm from the 29 overs he bowled in the 1st innings, he's dynamite.

Dear oh dear.

What to do with the worst top six we’ve ever sent to the old dart?

First in my crosshairs is Khawaja. Fat, lazy, no grit when it comes to hanging in there.

The most skilful (apart from Smith) and therefore the most culpable.

Labuchagne should replace him if he isn’t already replacing Smith.

Harris for Bancroft. No brainer.

Warner on thin ice.

And in the long term? Carey for Paine.

I'd make those changes also, Baron.
Khawaja has been given his opportunities.
And I don't reckon Bancroft is the deal as an opener.

Bancroft 8,7,13,16. 44 runs at 11
Warner 2,8,3,5. 18 runs at 4.5
Khawaja 13,40,36,2. 91 runs at 22.75
Head 35,51,7,42*. 135 runs at 45
Wade 1,110,6,1. 118 runs at 29.5
Paine 5,34,23,4. 66 runs at 16.5

Only Head's makes decent reading after two tests.

Wade's ton looking like an outlier.

Its Steve Smith v England.

Bancroft averages 26 from 10 Tests. I remember Rick Darling being dropped from Australia's B/C team and the selectors justifying it with "you can't be a Test opener with an average of 25".

This has the McGrath incident déjà vu written all over it.

No Smith for the next test gives the momentum back to the poms as I can’t see us winning or even drawing without Smith

Yep, that’s a fragile batting line up. And apparently Smith is unlikely to play the 3rd test.

Bancroft has to go for Harris. Warner and Khawaja will get a reprieve especially if Smith is out (with Labuschagne in for him).

Wade will also play but his last 7 test scores read: 5, 4, 8, 1, 110, 6 and 1 @ 19.

Paine really needs to give more at 7, I know it’s a tough gig being keeper, Captain and a batsman but that’s the role he took. Last 7 test scores are 5, 0, 45*, 5, 34, 23 and 4 @ 19.

I reckon Starc will come back in for an unlucky Siddle.
