Cricket

I find it amusing that the people squawking about thr drs decision on Jaiswal have said NOTHING about the earlier one where he was given not out.
He was able to get a further 50 runs after that one.

Shut up & accept the decision.

Move on.

BTW it was Ganguly who originally initiated the aggro & arrogant approach from India , Kohli just upped the ante.

Too bad the test isn't in the UK - heard Beau's a real hazard for batsmen with the Duke ball,

Little doubt after today's presser with the coach that the captain Rohit Sharma has been dropped for this test.

Replaced by Gill.

Huge (but correct) call.

Alright - so some insight into Slug Webster.

1. And most important first, he makes Robbie Nahas look like he packs a walnut. Hence his long standing nickname.

2. Was first picked for Tas under 19 side at age 14

3. Played in Tasmania's under 18 footy team.

4. Cousin of St Kilda's Jimmy.

5. Is very very chilled and relaxed. Also loves a beer and a party.

5. Was very very slow to adapt to first-class cricket. Was actually gifted Shield games for many years on talent, not output. Never averaging more than 33 in his first 6 seasons.

6. Was always a part time offie, but in a reverse of honorary Tasmanian Colin Funky Miller (he wears an earring like Funky), added medium pace bowling to his weaponry in 2020. Made a massive difference to his involvement in games and big boost to his confidence levels.

7. In 3 of the last 4 shield seasons has averaged over 50 (the other year 42) including a monster 938 runs at 58.62 to go with 30 wickets at 29.3 last year. Obviously Sheffield Shield player of the year.

The below shows his batting trajectory. Quite incredible to improve so much from a consistently low base.

8. He also performed very well in November's Australia A series against India, notching 145 runs at 72.50 while taking seven wickets at 19.57. Little known fact - He dismissed Nitish Reddy 3 times in the two-match series, so expect he'll be given the ball if Reddy gets away.

Go get em' Slug!!!! So bloody well deserved. He'll do Tasmania (and his country) proud in a huge match.

Reads like a precocious talent that took a long while to grow up n get fair dinkum about maximizing his ability instead of simply enjoying it. Finally got the main door open n poked his nose in for a look around, hope he enjoys it n makes the most of his opportunity.

BEAU’S A SLOW BURN

Daniel Cherny
In his early days as a professional cricketer, Beau Webster was so relaxed he came under fire for not running the drinks well enough.
“He was 12th man early on in his career,” his former Tasmanian teammate and ex-Australian spinner Xavier Doherty recalls.
“And he was the worst 12th man. It was at the WACA. I can’t remember how the game went, but I remember Beau being the worst 12th man. A lot of toastie- making, not being awake when the batter needs a drink.
“So I remember the leadership group at the time spelled out to him that, ‘Mate, it’s a far better job to be 12th man than 13th and on your bum at home’.”
This is consistent with most accounts of Webster, whose fresh baggy green at the SCG on Friday is the culmination of more than a dozen years in the system since his first Tigers rookie contract.
It was telling that when asked about Webster on Thursday, Australian captain Past Cummins said he hadn’t had a lot to do with his newest teammate.
While they are the same age, their careers have operated in parallel universes.
Cummins has generally been mothballed when off with the national team, while Webster has been chipping away. For the man nicknamed “Slug”, it has been a slow burn.
A decent junior Aussie Rules player who lined up for Tasmania’s under-18 team, Webster’s second cousin Jimmy is a veteran defender with St Kilda in the AFL.
He has remained with Tassie throughout – including playing with current Australian selection chair George Bailey. He’s changed BBL clubs a couple of times, batted up and down the order, switched from off-spin to medium-pace and in the past 12 months has played in England, Canada and the Cayman Islands.
Webster was somewhat infamously traded from Hobart Hurricanes to Melbourne Renegades for Matthew Wade shortly before the 2017-18 season.
He got a game against Sydney Thunder in Canberra, blasting an unbeaten 18 from four balls. Tom Cooper, a member of that Renegades side, remembers Webster’s excitement at getting a taste of the action.
“He’s like, ‘Oh how good’s this, I’ve been watching you guys do that’. He was over the moon,” Cooper said.
“He’s a great fella, like most Tasmanians he’s down to earth, doesn’t take himself too seriously, which I think helps with his cricket. He’s obviously professional, but he’s not one of those guys that it’s the be-all and end-all. He’s one of those guys that’s happy to let his hair down, which I think helps.”
Webster’s 2020 shift to bowling seam-up is the turning point in what had essentially been a middling state career for the best part of a decade. His 938 runs and 30 wickets in the Shield last season meant he was thrust into the national conversation once Cameron Green went down in September. He has been an outstanding performer, too, for Gloucestershire, and stood up for Australia A against India A ahead of the Test series.
“He had that casual sort of laid-back attitude,” Doherty said. “Probably took a little while for him for that to sort of rub off and knuckle down and cement himself into what a first-class cricketer needs to be. Similar to Mitch Marsh, very fun-loving, popular guy, lighthearted.
“He’ll be a popular member of that team. He’s certainly come a long way.”

Webster could've been given a look in 2021-22.
Good he has now, but I feel Cricket Australia are slow to act and adapt a bit of the time.

I hope Webster has a great debut, so good that they can't bring Marsh straight back in for the first test in Sri Lanka.
With Cummins saying that "we thought the time was right for Mitchy to have a freshen-up and miss this one", Marsh missing just the 1 test might be the plan.

Webster deserves to be given a decent crack at making a fist of a test career, Marsh needs to go back and perform in shield cricket (not white ball cricket) like Webster has.

I doubt we’ll see Marsh in the Test side again. He’s good at white ball cricket and that’s where he should finish his international career.

I hope Starc bowls at full pace.

Don’t wanna see him wincing heroically but not penetrating

Dunno, history suggests it is very hard to keep a Marsh out of the team on the rare occasion they aren't in it.

A few thoughts on the last test-
It had the pieces that make test cricket great cricket. Some fantastic individual performances and the game ebbed and flowed the way it should.
On the booing of Kohli, normally I would agree it is uncalled for, but when an opposition player bumps an Aussie, let alone one in his first game, the booing has to be expected.

One thing is for sure Webster will bowl more overs in this test than Marsh bowled in the previous 4 tests.

With Starc carrying a niggle, that's why they decided to give Marsh "a freshen up". Marsh is only good for a handful of overs.
