Danny V's Tommy

Given Richmond's unsuccessful season, does anyone else out there think that Danny's too much of a backline player??

It's such a far cry from the old Tommy Hafey strategy of 'if you kick enough goals, the game will take care of itself'. Of course, we won a lot more often with Tommy than we have with Danny.

I love Frawley, but this Tiger can't help but feeling that he's just too much of a backman and not offensive enough.

Welcome to PuntRoadEnd TS. :)

If you go back and read every second post for the last couple of years you'll see plenty of people think the same way about Danny's defensive style of play.
I think we've all heard enough "grind it out's" to last a lifetime.

I think TS is right on the ball...I find Danny very offensive! and can't really mention him and the Great Tom in the same breath (but I just did, didn't I?).

Hafey also played his footy as a defender but his attitude to tactics was anything but defensive.

Come back Tom, I'll even get my body-shirt and flairs out of mothballs if you return. (can't grow my hair shoulder-length again, but.)

Found an old newspaper under my bed the other day, i was interested to read it, came across this article:
Tommy has no time for wimps
RICHMOND legend and former coach Tommy Hafey has scoffed at suggestions
that Carlton's rugged training session last week, which claimed
Lance Whitnall with a knee injury, was too tough.

He said tough sessions might be too hard for ``wimps''.

Hafey said people were always willing to criticise physical training
sessions like Carlton's, when coach Denis Pagan told his players
to bring their mouthguards.

He said a lot of people associated with football suddenly became rocket
scientists and brain surgeons when the game was basic and simple.

``I am always going to be criticised for training hard,'' Hafey said
on Sport 927's Richmond Club Corner.

``We might have lost a game or two from it.''

Hafey said it was interesting to see one of Pagan's players was injured
in 20 minutes of match practice.

``Holy cow, we had 20 minutes every training session, at the very,
very, very least. And we were the best tackling team and pressure
team in the entire competition.''

Hafey said you couldn't talk about tackling and pressure unless you
practised it.

With that attitude, i would love to see Hafey back in the richmond coaching box!!!

Did anyone see Tommy addressing the Richmond players before the game? He was great rousing up the players for the occassion as you would expect. But he was quick to say that he wasn't going to talk tactics because he didn't want to step on anyones toes. As he said this, he looked at Danny Frawly. You just knew by the way he said this and glanced at Frawly, that he not only wanted to pump them up but to guide them strategically. That he wanted to take the reigns again and to tell them some simple fundamental do's and don'ts that for some reason has been forgotten and made complicated.

How I would love to have Tommy back as coach. He has always got the best out of his players, they always play for him, and his tactical style makes sense and is simplistic. The real dissapointing thing was that the Richmond Football Club should have got him back years ago (right after his stint at Sydney), or at the very least 4 years ago when he wanted to coach the tigers then.

The passion is still there in Tommy, football and the Richmond Football Club is his life. If his health is up to it, I would love to see him coaching the Tigers again, or at the very least in some sort of perminate assistant job.

Have to agree Larrikin.

RFC has gone about putting together a coaching panel they think is pretty good. However, to me, there just seems to be no one amongst them capable of getting that little bit extra out of players and getting them to achieve any more than they were always capable of.

I just think that because we've tried to go away from being a team that wins on passion, that we have all but eroded any that did exist and in the process managed to dwindle the spirit and fight within the team.

Getting someone like Tom Hafey at the club would be just what is needed, imo. He knows how to get the best out of people and how to bring people together.

Also, he is as passionate as they come about the game and about Richmond. He doesn't need to be a coach, as such, but someone who works with the players and can offer some experience, knowledge and insights to players and coaches alike. A mentor type role.

any excuse for another Frawley song.

Sing to Louis Armstrong's Wonderful World

I see trades going wrong, no development too
I see them lose and nothin’ I can do
And I think to myself that our coaching’s absurd

I see other teams win and put up a fight
It’s seems pretty obvious something’s not right
And I think to myself Danny Fawley’s a *smile*

The dreams of finals have long passed by
A flag’s as close as a pie in the sky
I see fans shaking heads saying "we play like poo"
They're really thinking "Should I renew?"

I hear tigers cry, I want to scream no
They'll never be much with Spud running the show
And I think to myself Spud’s thinking is blurred
Yes I think to myself the pot needs to be stirred
Oh yeah

And another one for Kylie fans.

To the tune of Better the Devil You Know

Better that Danny should go
Better that Danny should go
Woh
Better that Danny should go
Better that Danny should go
Woh woh woh

Say you won't coach us no more
We’ll never take you back again
No more excuses no, no
'Cos I've heard them all before
A hundred times or more

How quickly I’ll forget
If you say you'll immediately go
'Cos its true what they say
It's better that Danny should go

Woh woh woh
Your gameplan was non-existant I know
I think we often failed to score
If you say you’ll leave us, oh joy
I can't ask for more
I'll come back if you make the call

You should resign today
Waiting for the dud to go
Yes it's true what they say
It's better that Danny should go

Woh woh woh
You know you are hack

You know you are a hack
Worst of the coaching men

To the tune of Up There Cazaly (I'll give it a rest now)

In a season not worth re-living
The coach has had his time
We all wish that he was gone
Get out you dud, resign
Spud the dud, you’ve made us fall
Bad decision do abound
But when you line 'em up together
He’s the worst coach going around

Up yours Spud Frawley, you cant get it right
Doubt there’s a gameplan, your coaching is *smile*
Up yours Spud Frawley, you’ve caused much chagrin
With you at the helm, we’ll never win

Now there's a lot more things to Richmond
Than really meets the eye
There are days when you could give it up
There are days when you could cry
And each week you’ll hate it
Because we’ve failed to score
When the other team run on and kick a goal
Spud’s the worst for sure

Up yours Spud Frawley, you cant get it right
Doubt there’s a gameplan, your coaching is *smile*
Up yours Spud Frawley, you’ve caused much chagrin
With you at the helm, we’ll never win

And one to the tune of "Neighbours"

Coaches, footy teams need good coaches,
Just a win would stop us mourning, help to get us through the day.
Coaches, calling all the other coaches, the next coach is only a season away

Frawley, everybody laughs at Frawley,
With a little resignation, you’d be off to Centrelink Today.
Frawley, should be digging for potatoes.
That's when Richmond can go all the way.

Coaches, need to have at least a slight clue, Frawley it’s not your forte.
Coaches, other teams have got good coaches,
It’s no wonder that we’re floundering, coz we’re coached by a potato.
Coaches, I wish that ours would go away,

That's when Richmond gets good again..
That's when Richmond gets good again

And yet another one - we all remember the Gilligan's Island tune don't we

Now sit right back and you'll here a tale
a tale of a fateful trip
that started with appointment, of an absolute drip
the coach was unsuccesful man, the recruiters showed their flaws
there were plenty of passengers
who often played like *smile*
who often played like *smile*

The season started getting tough, the coach he should be tossed
If not for the stupidity of the board, the coach's cause 'd be lost
The club lost ground on the ladder and will do for a while,
If the story was not so sad you'd have to crack a smile.

We all know Spud should be cast away, to the farm for a long long time
The fact that they gave him the job verges on a crime
They'll have to sack Mr Frawley soon, coz he still thinks everything's fine.
The senior coach and Beck too, will do their very best,
to make the others comfortable, and the Tigers subject to jest

No skills, no plan, no good recruits, not a single luxury.
Bet you that no flag is coached by Spud Frawley.
So join us here each week my friends, you'll soon go off your dial
If the Richmond Football Club keep Frawley for a little while

Having listened to Tommy Hafey speak at many functions its plain to see this man is commited, dedicated, tough, and Tiger through and through. I have seen him make hardened men cry at his speeches where he hit the heart of people just there to listen, I have heard him speak to secondarys chool kids who had no idea who he was and he held their attention for an hour....I have seen him amongst the people....I have also seen Dud as a development officer and he couldn't even speak to kids....he couldn't even motivate the kids to complete a simple training drill....

Tom may be getting on but he was was Frawley could only dream about and WILL NEVER have....the ability to communicate...the ability to inpsire and he will NEVER, despite what they tell you embrace the Tiger spirit.

Agreed RWS,
Tommy just has an immense presence wether he's in the rooms or walking down the street. He's got a real love for living healthy and can't stand excuses - rekkons they're just reasons for not doing something,.Someone on here mentioned him as a possible care-taker coach if we ditched Frawley during the season.Neither will happen but I wonder how many Tigerfolk would actually back Hafey as coach given the current situation?

Ox...as much as I admire and respect Tom Hafey I do not think he would be the man for the job....but heck just imagine him sitting in the box as an assistant or even a fitness advisor.....imagine the emotion that would flood the Punt Road Ground if both he and KB stood in the middle and said that they were now going to work to lead the way.

Imagine Tom speaking to the players before a game against Collingwood or Carlton...imagine these guys who do have talent depsite what we may think walking 3m tall and feeling invincible.....the self belief he would bring would achieve success immediately

Oe of the problems is that under Frawley no-one believes and the younger players are always looking for the crook that will drag them off the field.
