What’s the recovery like Craig? I know he won’t play this year but if he has ruptured a kidney, what’s his next few months going to be like?
Scoop depends on the severity of his injury, the structures involved within the kidney and what interventions are undertakwen if required.
If he has a ruptured or lacerated kidney, the treatment and recovery time can differ obviously from a contused or bruised kidney.
There are various degrees of kidney injury from trauma, with most of them non requisite of surgical intervention except the most severe.
The kidney can heal itself well as long as blood supply is not lost and enough healthy tissue is viable.
Serious bleeding can occur in high grade trauma to the kidneys due to the huge blood supply especially the renal veins and arteries.
The majority of kidney injuries are often now left to heal on their own unless surgical intervention is neccessary in the case of transection or damage to a major vessel resulting in internal haeemorrhaging.
Bleeding from lesser kidney injuries doesnt always show in the urine as it may be from Kidney tissue that escapes into the space behind the kidney.
If Dusty has a non surgical injury he will recover with simple rest and general care over a number of weeks.
He will have ongoing management, tests and scans to keep an eye on his healing.
A few weeks and he'll be much better as the bruising pain and inflammation lessen during the progress of healing.
