Game Day Rd 23 Tigers v Lions - Reasonably large final H & A game day thread

To be more serious, I felt that after the first quarter we dropped in tackling intensity except when they started to challenge. I also felt we were happy to concede them the outside ball on the wings and let them bang the ball in for our awesome defence to deal with.

Stepping up pressure and intensity may not qualify as cards up the sleeve, but you know what I mean.

Care to speculate on what we have up the sleeve?

We played a very unRichmond like game. Sweet FA forward pressure. At a guess we went in to try playing a style that concentrated on nullifying the Lions style to see whether we could. Two weeks time that would be the fallback gameplan we revert too if our natural game isn't getting us anywhere.

Here we go.......let's start the bitching.

From The Hun:

ANGRY CHARLIE

This is why Grimes is a lock for the All-Australian team.

The shutdown defender kept Charlie Cameron to only one possession in the first half.

After tearing the Cats apart last week, Cameron produced the quietest half of footy he has played all year, and was clearly unhappy with some of Grimes’ defensive tactics.

Cameron showed his frustration when he approached the emergency umpire and AFL staff on the bench early in the third term about the way Grimes was manhandling him.

Lions’ staff had to escort him away from the officials in an incident which the AFL will review.

The Lions will also take their case to the umpiring department.

Grimes had the speed to match Cameron and was typically courageous in the air, spoiling almost everything in his area.

Fagan had a long chat with Cameron on the bench in the second term in a bid to spark the livewire.

Ironic then that even the first goal he scored he had a massive chunk of Grimes jumper in the build up.

I have just watch the game a second time thanks to Watch AFL and just wish I had a mute button to hide all the inanities and inaccuracies in calling from Taylor. He spoils the game time and again without even trying.

We left some easy goals on the table in the 1st half.
Need to make those opportunities count, take those and the game would've been done by half time.

Agree that we need both of these but surely you don't think Dimma said hey forwards apply less pressure today and midfielders ignore Neale he's no good?

Definitely didn't apply a tag on Neale, Graham didn't have a great game IMO, I would have switched him onto Neale just for the change of scenery. But he didn't, possibly because he knows what he's doing and I don't, but also because it's a card up the sleeve for next game.

Regarding forward pressure or lack of - it's probably less what Dimma said than what he didn't say.

Two teams on a streak of 9 and 8 wins ... Played out like that with one of the two enjoying a 3-5 goal home ground advantage. Were we at our best? Unlikely. Were the lions? Don't know. But a neutral supporter standing next to me was in awe of our defence, as I was but unlike Greg Norman couldn't bring myself to say it. After quarter time their midfield matched/ bested ours. Some of our blokes or colectivley our system felt the heat of a team with nothing to lose. We have to play better in a fortnight to beat them. We can.

About the 10th time this year this has been the case. Is there a finals switch for accurate goal kicking?

The final is going to be huge.
Surely the AFL will move to the MCG?

Gee, I thought Graham was pretty good.

I love the kid but he didn't seem as involved and also turned the ball over a bit more than usual I thought. Normally I notice him doing more. After quarter time and especially in the third that's when I'd expect to see JG burying a few with tackles.

Could be wrong though :)

I remember 2-3 lace-out bullet passes, but I'll have a second look at the game at some stage and see if I agree with myself. ;)

We played well enough to cruise to a five-goal win but didn't play the Richmond way. I suspect we were trying a few things out, playing in a manner which nullified Brisbane's ability to score, while leaving our forward pressure game up our sleeve knowing we'd be playing the return fixture in a fortnight's time.
Today's performance and my research into the dimensions of the Gabba (156m - 138m) for AFL matches leaves me feeling fairly confident that if we play the Richmond way we will earn the right to a Preliminary Final at the MCG.

No one on here seems to care that we did not lay a tackle in our forward 50 all game. That is suppose to be one of our strengths. Where the @#$@ were our small forwards Rioli 2 tackles up the ground, Castagna the same, Jack and Tom one tackle each up the ground.

What happened to hold the ball in our forward line? Their lose man in defence made it difficult but we have beaten that tactic before and held the ball in.

We seemed to be all rebound off the half back line only today. No other ploy used.
lions kicked one of their lowest scores for the year, you cant tackle fresh air, it was an open game and they played a lot of circle work keepings off playing into our defenders hands

We had less possessions, less inside 50s, less frees, smashed in the clearances and the contested possessions and won the game by 27 and left a few goals out there. We can play much better than that and I suspect we will in 2 weeks time.

We also took the best they could throw at us in the 3rd and took control again.

Out of interest, when did we last play at the Gabba ?

Off the top of my head I can’t remember.

Bloody weird isn't it? We're probably the only team in the comp that doesn't play to the generally accepted Stats mantra of the competition yet we're more than competitive over the last three years. Stats farking Schmats, hope nobody else catches on to this for another few years.
