Those are great numbers, but 23 seems like a lot of losses for a side that won three flags in four years, particularly considering the one year we didn't win it was the year we lost the fewest games.
But I guess it's an indication that we finished the home-and-aways as low as third in each of the three years we did win it.
Another sign of the extent to which, I believe, we deliberately manage resources throughout the season to make sure we finish top four but are peaking at the right time, and to hell with things like percentage.

Yeah, if you’re going to compare Richmond 2010 with North 2020 it took us 3 years to make finals, 7 years to make top 4.

We had the nucleus of a flag side in Rance, Cotch, Edwards, Jack, Dusty, Astbury. I can’t see whatever is left of Norths list being the nucleus of a flag side.

Exactly.

They had 3 top level talls in Goldie, Taz and Brown.

They let Brown go and Tarrant and Gioldstein are nearly done.

Corr is a handy addition.

They have to draft heavily and bring in the new nucleus to go forward with.

Simpkin, Zurhaar, Larkey, McKay, Thomas, Xerri is what they need to add to this draft.

Whichever way you put it, in their current predicament it's totally unrealistic.
Agreed they don't have the clout to attract the heavy hitters, corporate backing, funding.

Its going to be a hard slog for the next few years for the Kanga's but they have to stay the course.

I Was shocked too that we have lost 23 games in that 17-20 period 23.

We've looked in trouble during each of our three flag years.

2017 - lost 5 of 6, "Richmondy" etc; only began to look like a serious contender with the GWS win in R17
2019 - erratic early, then mid-season slump when injuries peaked; first premiership winner to come from outside the top 8 after R14
2020 - very poor start, looked miles off the pace in Haw/St.K defeats; equal lowest ladder position for a premier (14th); gradual build, outlasted all comers

Ironically and as has been pointed out numerous times, our best and most consistent season ended in disappointment after finishing minor premiers.

This is why I'm happy to concede to those who have our "dynasty" behind Brisbane/Geelong/Hawthorn - we haven't been as dominant over the course of full seasons as those teams. It doesn't mean anything.

Of the 23 losses, 17 came when we were younger than the opposition. Age difference was minimal in 4 of the other 6. The St.Kilda game this year was the one that rang alarm bells, and we started to pull together in the wake of it. Brisbane also beat us on our merits in the final, after which most of us were pretty despondent.

A low number in the last column is generally a sign of a club nearing a rebuild. Low numbers in the first and last columns are a very bad sign.

Very true, plus we lost the first final to the lions this year, although I think Hawks/Cats lost finals too in their dynasty years? That 2019 stat is amazing.
Anyway we'll just have to win in 2021 to settle any debate.

Curtis Taylor is the other North youngster who is on track for stardom.

I'm a bit more bullish than most on North. I think they've finally cleared out the players who were taking them nowhere.

A couple of good drafts will have them back in good shape in 2-3 years' time.

If they're smart, they will manage their salary cap so they can hunt down a couple of decent free agents.

Brisbane is the template.

What's Hardwick's record from 2013 to today and 2017 to today?
Because no-one should count his first and second year, the team he inherited was a B-Grade amateur side.
The pieces were there to build a good side but when he finally got rid of players like Griffens and Vickery things started to turn.
If we aren't the best team ever at using the rookie draft, i would go he.
Hardwick copped shiit at the start but now he is among the best not just at Richmond but in the history of the AFL.
If we get one more he will match Sheedy and go past Parkin, Pagan, & Malthouse and leave Blight the clown in his dust.
This bloke needs a statue.
Parkin got four, just like Sheeds did.

Dimma b goin mighty fine as a coach. Already right up there with the best of the best. 18 teams these days rather than a measly 12 or 14. Dimma's already got the back to back, if he cracks it for another flag, or maybe even better the trifecta next year. Then his name shines up there with the best of the best throughout the history of the game of Aussie Rules. Bloke might not be all fancy whizz bang reputation just at the moment, but.
Two time premiership player 2000 and 2004.
Assistant coach at Hawforn in their 2008 premiership year.
Triple premiership coach at Tigerland with possibly more still to come.

Must be something crazy good in the water that back pocket players drink that turns them into brilliant coaches when they finish playing.
Parkin four flags.
Hafey four flags.
Sheeds four flags.
Malthouse three flags.
Dimma three flags n still counting.
All played a large amount of back pocket and amazingly successful as coaches. These blokes have scored 18 flags over the last 54 seasons, that's a crazy strike rate.

Pretty sure Brisvegas never finished on top during their trifecta. Far more important to simply finish in the top four for the double chance, with the playing list in healthy shape and in good form leading into the finals. Got a feeling Dimma might have learnt that bit the hard way in 2018.

I was only counting the serious multiple flag winning coaches :)), but that's another five flags in that period for 23 all up. You'd think someone would wise up n there'd be a conga line of retired back pockets grabbing all the coaching jobs.

By definition they are not flashy centre-half-forwards with oodles of talent. Had to do it the hard way.
