Maurice Rioli Jnr

That's a valid theory 8ty.
Maurice's current high pressure role is a very hard one to sustain for a full game week to week.
Despite the low possession numbers, he's certainly having a big impact coming on as the sub as others are tiring.
Was buzzing around like a mosquito on heat vs the Brions in that 2nd half & provided a much needed point of difference that helped turn the game.
Particularly instrumental in the chaos play that resulted in the mark & goal to Lynch late in the 3rd term.
It's a tricky one for mine. Playing him from the start of the game could be a weapon but it could also end up being weakness by game's end.
Then manage his minutes. Just like we did with Soldo as that 2nd ruck. Difference here is that MRJ can run.

Plays from the start. Need his pressure. Can’t allow easy rebound from our forward line. Makes defenders panic even with perceived pressure.

Love this kid.
Can't wait for next year and another full preseason.
He will be flying by round 1 next year.

I think most PREnders are MoJu fans.

But many PREnders wanted him dropped month or so ago. Rationale? Not getting enough ball.

MoJu was dropped. Morris said Maurice was in a programme to work on his flair IIRC. All good. Get a kick and use it. We all knew what we were looking for.

MoJu played reserves despite a personal matter, and not well. Played again the week after, ok. And then was rushed back to Sub duties. (Injuries to seniors.)

Sub at AFL is well above VFL. But the sub is fresh when the others have already played 90 minutes. And only has 30 min to play, (Luxury.)

Sub is the softest position on an AFL park and ideal for Maurice. He gets an easy matchup, is fresh when others are tired and is licensed to use by hand or foot.

The idea that Maurice is disadvantaged by playing sub is not right IME. MoJu is getting the ideal matchup and blooming. He is finally getting license at an appropriate level and can be seen to profit.

We were better when Junior came on last week, and even better with the pressure he applied when he ventured further down the ground, he needs to be in the starting 22.

Needs a bigger tank to be more effective across an entire game. Didn't Shai get a specialised running coach over 1 or 2 off seasons? Hopefully Jnr can take a leaf from his book, as he's got the speed but needs to build that aerobic capacity.

If anything, we should try to manufacture more scenarios in which we have fresh players chasing down fatigued opponents, not less.

Pressure and fatigue go together like a horse and carriage

Been teffific as the pressure sub in recent weeks but this is a great opportunity for him offensively.
Poort will be putting a lot of focus on Bolton & Cumberland.
He'll get some looks. Hope he maximises them.

Really needs some minutes on the ball or the wing to learn more offensive craft, build stamina and gain further confidence. If gets dropped again, must play 80% of time midfield in 2s

He was awesome tonight.

Makes things happen around the ball.

He always looks like he's going to turn a contest in to a win. Doesn't always do it, but it looks possible, when it shouldn't.

He can sneak a goal, and involve himself in scoring chains.

Most importantly, he makes us play like Richmond again.

A massive point of difference.

Way too many fumbles and bad decision-making. We all know he's elite defensively. Could have been a great game if he made more out of his chances. Hopefully it's just confidence and not that the game is too fast for him.

It was a bit wet and many of the players had McIntosh moments with the slippery pill.

Without the ball he’s good. He’s quick and he chases hard.
With the ball he is almost. He almost does something great with the ball, then he doesn’t.

But he’s 19. A 2nd year player. He came from way behind, and I’m surprised he has come so far in so little time.

I think we should keep playing him for now. We have no one else who chases as hard and fast as he does.

Poet defence crumbled in the second half from our pressure, real or perceived. Rioli is the most important piece of this aspect

Definitely more noticeable without the ball than with it, but I'd prefer him over Castagna,

Needs another big pre-season to improve his fitness, and once he's fit enough his composure and decision making with the ball will improve.
