The simple reason for that is they are not answerable to anyone.
Soccer, cricket, rugby, almost any "normal" sport's national controlling body can't just change its rules on a whim because they have other nations and an international controlling body to deal with.

... and have less knobs running the game

More Dusty moments maaate
Yeah right. Gill said that ‘tongue in cheek’.

As if Gill & Hocking and more so Whateley etc could handle ANOTHER finals series & GF of Dusty moments.

That happens- pencil in another Tiger premiership.

Absolutely astounding at the decision & timing of this.

This is purely driven by hysteria and Clarko’s voice.

This 23 ‘medical sub’ has not been thought out through thoroughly. It’s a hasty , rushed decision that you can see some coaches manipulating this.

Just call it a ‘concussion sub’ and leave it at that.

How will the rule be worked out for that 23 ‘medical sub’?

1. if not activated can he play VFL?

2. If activated and used can he play the following week or does a concussion rule apply to that player? 12 days?

3. if not does that player get paid? If so, full match payments, half , what?

4. Who will judge whether the player injured is ‘truly ‘ injured for the sub to be activated? Player or doctor ?

5. Do you make the ‘medical sub’ player a under 23 or over?

I have more but don’t want to bore you all.

Apologies if these have been discussed or the AFL has answered these questions.

Waiting

So when clubs are trying to save money and staff and players have taken pay cuts for reduction in caps, this rule will cost clubs $110,000 in match payments plus bonuses and finals.

In 2018, SHocking said that they wouldn’t bring in any new rules in January or February. I suppose that’s why they waited until March...?

The medical sub can play VFL regardless of whether or not he is activated, Mr No Longer.

Club doctor decides if the injured player is too injured to continue, and must provide a medical certificate to the AFL the next day. From my reading though, if the player subsequently proves his fitness he will be free to play the next week, so expect a lot of miracle recoveries.

Dunno about pay. No age restrictions as far as I can tell.

It's not going to hurt us unless we get an Ebert-prelim situation in a tight game, but that doesn't make it not stupid. Given how hard it is for our youngsters to break in, it might even help us, but again - still stupid.

Steve Hocking has been a disaster since he joined the AFL. His departure can’t come soon enough.

It's here. A new rule 24 hours before the start of the season:rolleyes:. It's a medical, not just concussion, sub. And here's the kicker; the injury must be game ending but the player will be able to prove his fitness to play the following week o_O . Has to be approved by AFL medical officer. No can't see any rorting of this rule . How many players who are struggling for form will come off the ground with "hammy tightness" in the second half?

Why stop here? What happens if 2 or 3 or 4 players get game ending injuries. Let's just scrap the VFL, SANFL and WAFL sides and have the whole squad sitting on the bench.

FFS this is an absolute joke. SHocking press conference at 12pm. Hopefully it is to announce his resignation. Otherwise he should be sacked. The most incompetent AFL administrator ever. No mean feat.

Yeh, it was clarko who put it in Gil”s head. Clarko who had a rule interpretation changed mid year. Clarko who whinged about the quality of games, which was more to do with him having to watch his *smile* side every week than anything else.
Clarko who wants to orchestrate more exposure and game time for young players because he needs to get games into them. If his side was at the top he wouldn’t be putting this forward.

Yet NOT ONE THING was done to amend the rules when "The Unsociable Hawks" were ruling the roost.

According the Rhett Bartlett, anyone selected as emergency will be treated as the other 22 and have a game played credited to them. I would assume if the AFL officially considers them has having played a game, despite sitting on the pine, then any match payments would need to be paid too.

Someone with the skills should remaster the McCartney and Winds classic as "Rules on the Run"

What's the bet they tinker with this rule as the season goes on?

I don't think this rule is unreasonable, but to do it one day before the season starts is just a farce. Mucking around with the player on the mark was more important? And these guys are apparently the experts?

Gross incompetence.

Did we now break the AFL just like we did the crows and gws? think we might have broken the cats as well

Can you imagine Hocking tonight. First game of the season and Richmond exploit his late minute rule and use the sub for a relatively innocuous injury.

He probably thinks we do this to him deliberately.

Carlton subbing out a dud was an eyebrow raiser. Who brings in a new rule a couple of days out? The AFL hillbillies thats who.
