I am really impressed with the tips and knowledge that some PREnders have offered on this board - thank you to all those who spare the time to pass on their computer wisdom.

Another question for the boffins - is it worth downloading a pc cleanup programme  and if so, can anyone suggest a good one that isn't too expensive and can be downloaded from the net? Thanks in advance.

We don't recomend Nortons for XP, it seems to cause more conflicts than it's worth

Try these sites, a lot of programs can be downloaded and used for a limited period

most have an undo facility so if things stuff up you can reset back to how you started.

Very useful to get rid of anything you wouldnt want your missus or your mother to find ;)

prices are $US

http://www.pcpitstop.com/default.asp is handy too

Hey GT, I would echo what TC is saying re Nortons for XP, does cause conflicts, and is fiddly and inefficient.

If you are using the program to recover disk space, eg: getting rid of temp internet files and other files that can clog up your pc, I have found window washer to be pretty reasonable. you can download a 30 day trial version from:
http://www.webroot.com

As with any utility of this type, have a good read of the instructions that come with the program, and be sure that if you are a first time user of a program like this, that you check and double check to ensure you are not getting rid of anything you want to keep, as once its gone, recovering it is a time consuming process best left to an expert. I also back up TC on the sites listed, PC Pitstop is fairly handy.
Any queries, feel free to put your hand up.

Cheers,
Smoo.

We have just got boost XP as it is made for XP thought it would work better http://www.download.com/3120-20_4-0.html?qt=boost+xp&tg=dl-2001 So far we are really impressed. It's a 30 day trial. but isn't limited like most, will probably buy it and report in a month

unless we find a hack ;D
