Pick 53: Jack Graham

Like McIntosh, Graham is another of our regular gut runners, who's also playing catchup on his preseason.
You can see the efforts there but he's struggling to exert his influence in the midfield. He ends up running around a lot but not doing much damage.
There's reasons we're fading from game's & Jack's current endurance levels is one of the reasons.
Your season is shot if you have an interrupted pre-season. It’s a known fact in all sports.

Bill Shankly talked about blokes who carry pianos and blokes who play them. This bloke has always been the former, but has kidded a few into thinking he's the latter.

Averaging 1 clearance and 2 clearances. Not a blue collar mid.

Averaging 20 touches. Not a white collar mid.

Dog collar mid right now.

You can’t keep putting your hand out for a pay cheque when as a midfielder you have little to no influence so far this year.

Needs to be dropped.

Doesn't look right, if players aren't conditioned properly they shouldn't play until they are.

My whipping boy now. Dumb decisions poor skills and slow as you can be and still.be on a list. His kicking to advantage a team mate is hideous. Is there another role for him? As a third tier player he looked good but this year he is so far from being able to fill the vacancies our old stars will leave.

The issue is perhaps Graham was never really that good but when you are playing next to Cotchin, Martin, Prestia and Edwards in their prime you can get away with a lot of deficiencies. What he did have was a hunger to run and get to contests or provide a tackle. Has none of that now and is now entering his prime and should be leading the midfield group but instead is playing like an old man. Honestly looked older than Cotch tonight. Another MC blemish in the rush to bring him into the team from Round 1.

With our better mids getting older we needed Graham to step up but unfortunately he's not good enough. Average and slow.

Much improvement left? Not looking like it.
Conditioning an issue maybe but actually think JG is a big part of the problem given the current AFL format.
The game has shifted fast.
Not anywhere near an elite mid atm.

Could he keep a spot as a lock down tagger? Perhaps worth the experiment of sitting on Oliver next week as he offers very little offensively.

I coudn't understand the calls for him to be captain - he is always going to be a fringe player.

I like the idea of tagger as that’s probably all he can bring right now.

But that role belongs in a different team, a different system.

Dimma ain’t changing anything till we can’t make finals.

what's the issue? Unfit? Played out of position? Playing injured?
Looked like he could be captain material at one point
The coaching staff think an unfit Graham offers more than RCD or other players. And is in the 22 from round 1. Fair enough. Have a crack with the best 22 over the preseason. Good to select Ivan gibcus, Hugo, Dow and Ross aarts Parker and Graham. But the losses highlight problems with our play style.

The way we're playing these first few weeks, we 'aint making finals any time soon. The back to the future game style the AFL has forced in has bypassed us big time n we need to spend the rest of this year just trying to learn it so we can be ready for next year.
