Gary Ablett Jrn and Jobe Watson aside, there are a lot of Father Sons out there who had dads that were moderate footy players.

Jono Brown
Ayce Cordy
Tom hawkins
Mitch Wallis
Heath Shaw
Marc Murphy - knocked back brisbane for Carlton

Sure some would disagree but the fathers were by not absolute super stars. Got to remember the mum may be tough as nails and a tiva or pettifer may end up producing a gun.

haha yer i was only joking. But they'd want to end up better than their dads.

Re: father sons- father sons 2011 2012 2013

Yea - Think tucky and the Kellaways have the best chance - pretty sure they married into sisters of footy players..

but kids a long way off..

Would be disappointed if Cogs or Michael Gale ended up producing gun footy players that did not get to play for the tigers due to a lack of 7 games.

Re: father sons- father sons 2011 2012 2013

What's the bet Trevor Poole has a 'Selwood' of sons and they all go F/S to Geelong.

I reckon John Murphy was an excellent player. Would have been in the starting midfield of any team of his era. The rest I would probably agree with though...

Hard on some of those Dads .
Steve Wallis was an excellent player for the dogs, Ray Shaw was a Collingwood captain and fine player and as already mentioned John Murphy was a gun at Fitzroy, not far off his son.

But the point is largely correct. Joel Bowden was a much better player than his Dad as was Richo as 2 Tiger examples. John Scarlett was a good player but not in the same class as Matthew.

A bit harsh here:
John Murphy was a very very good footballer - captain of the Roy boys & played for Victoria - hard as nails & played well over 200 games.
Steve Wallis was an excellent footbaler too.
Jumping Jack Hawkins - he of the hangar mark was no dud & added a fair bit of excitement to the game
Ray Shaw while being a little Collingwood mongrel - was no dud in his day & also captained his Club which would be considered an honour

The mother also plays a big part. I think you'll find that most gun footy player have a mother who played high level women's sport.

Re: father sons- father sons 2011 2012 2013

I saw Benny Gale with his young son (I think) at the Port game today ........

Hopefully a candidate in 15 years!

Didn't Lids' Dad play one game for Carlton and was a bit of a spud, but his Mum played state level netball?

Re: father sons- father sons 2011 2012 2013

Pretty sure he has 1 or 2. They'd be about 8 or 9.

Re: father sons- father sons 2011 2012 2013

Next ones coming through are Dale Weightman's boys. Pretty sure the oldest is 14 so we won't see him for 4 years.

The oldest boy must be closer to 12. I remember seeing him with a young boy at a Coburg game at Box Hill years ago. Billy Nicholls won the game for Box Hill in the dying seconds! Can't remember anything else so that means it was >10 years ago.

Re: father sons- father sons 2011 2012 2013

Fair enough. Either way, we have awhile to wait yet.

Re: father sons- father sons 2011 2012 2013

Weightman's sons are too small from what i have heard...
