Talking Politics

Rather buy a couple of snags at the local Bunnings cook up, got me a feeling them demo sausages would be somehow tainted. Way to much political *smile* n toxic air at that close range.
I'm going to go a Greens Party BBQ and pig out on vegetarian snags.

Yeh, much safer directing them to the church or the scouts.

I have a couple of kids but Family First is always last when I vote. Scary RW nutjobs.
Yep.. and them, Australian Christians and One Nation are 2, 3 and 4 on a lot of Coalition how-to-vote cards

The most unnatural thing I’ve ever seen.

Two people that scream lack of leadership.

That’s on the Tones Abs onion eating scale weird.

Interesting to read that Trumps campaign manager snuck in the country over the election to give advice to the Dutton team.

Madness.

Some credit to Terrible yellow. He's at least come back into this thread. The diehard "ALP will be crushed" crowd from 4 or 5 weeks ago have just disappeared. Too scared or ashamed to come in here and admit they may have got it wrong (again). I guess we'll need to wait until Spring 2026 to see them out in force again.

Its not over 'till its over...

Its not looking good for Dutton, which is good for the nation, but I'm not counting chickens.

Agree Taylor is an idiot and if they go to him, then they will just be repeating the same problems over and over, just with some stupider. He makes Dutton look like Einstein. I have no idea how he has a Masters in Economics, he sure doesn't sound like it, maybe he's good at hiding his intelligence.

I take it you have never talked to an economist or read any mainstream economics?

Surprises me not at all he has a Master in Economics.

Any resemblance between mainstream economics and the real world is purely coincidental, in any case, if you throw reality at them they just call it "empiricism". Yeah, looking at the real world with empirical evidence rather than concocted theories is the wrong approach for an economist.

So get this spam SMS as I’m about to fly home from nz to Melbourne.

What’s the truth and what’s the BS?

Since the last election, Zoe Daniel has voted with the Greens 76% of the time.

In February 2025, she voted against mandatory minimum sentences for terrorist offences.

She voted with Labor to protect the CFMEU by abolishing the building industry watchdog.

She has advocated for an increase to the GST after promising not to.

Zoe Daniel will vote with the extreme Greens.

No idea, but (as a voter in Goldstein) the more relevant question is what the actual votes were about. Plus, in how many of those votes did the Libs also vote with the Greens? Remember, a hell of a lot of votes in parliament go through with everyone voting for them.

Plus, there are other comparisons which can be made. For example, there was an ad on the front of The Age today, it stated that the LNP voted 95% of the time with One Nation. Think about that.

Also, look at the honest government ad on page 1527, it explains preferential voting quite well. The upshot of preferential voting is that you should always rank the candidates in the order in which you would want them elected. If your candidate is not competitive your vote will go, at full value, to the candidate next in your preferences.

The Senate is more complicated, but the same thing applies. Order the candidates, or parties, in the order of your preference. The preferences go through as full votes if your candidate or party is not competitive. Where it works differently is when you vote for a party and they get a Senator elected, but received more votes than required to elect the Senator. Then the extra votes go through as partial preferences. For example, if the quota required to be elected to the Senate is 1 million votes and your party gets 1.5 million votes, they have used 2/3 of their votes to elect the Senator. So, the preferences flow through at 1/3 value. It is quite complicated to count, and this is only in the Senate, in the House the preference always, with no exception, go through as full votes.

Yep, your ignorance rears its ugly head again.

Candidates are not allowed to provide food or the like to electors.

The sausages at polling booths are sold by either a starving state school (denied funds as we apparently have to fund the second pool at a few destitute private schools) or by a charity if the polling booth is at a church, scout hall or the like. Also, you can look this up as there is a useful website giving info about democracy sausages: https://democracysausage.org/federal_election_2025/m/@-29.26198,133.3308,z4.772114/

I have talked to a few people who voted early, they told me of long lines and having to queue for about an hour. Organising a postal vote also takes time and effort. Me, I drop in mid afternoon every election and I'm out in about 5 minutes. No queues, no trudging down to the post box, just simple walk in, grab a sanger, and vote.

Whether it's over or not really isn't the point though. My post was more about our resident RWers escape from this thread as the polls started showing Dutton in a lot of trouble.

Bill Shorten knows it aint over till its over

The polls are less reliable these days, although they are trying to sort out how to make them more accurate with all the changes in how people get their news and home phones are not so common.

That said, the LNP campaign has been a shitshow and it is looking like the government will be returned. We'll see, I just hope Zoe gets back in and Monique in Kooyong.

They can't exactly come on here and boast about the great job Trump is doing either, can they.
