Talking Politics

Over 5m prepolled.
Read on an NPR article that it was up to 8.6 million out of 18.1 million. Just massive!

I reckon the two big parties will try to stop it from happening as it doesn't suit their timetabling and agenda.

Hour to go before polls close Eastern States. The winner will be who gets the the swinging voters votes. The swinging voter who analyses the performance of parties. Not like sheep who vote Labor ,Liberal Green because they vote like that year after year

Don't forget the silly old *smile* who read and believe the Daily Mail. They have a tough choice between One Nation, Family First, Crumpet of Patriots, or the Lib/Nat coalition (well, only for the more left leaning Daily Mail readers). It's enough to make one forget where they left their dentures.

typical answer from ewe **loo.

I’m not sure if a larger Cross bench is better for the country. It is certainly better for the voters who return a cross bench member.
Whether we have a Labor or LNp majority in the main we know roughly how they are going to act.
With minority government those policies are open to amendment or interference. In the likely make of the cross bench that means voters from Australia’s wealthiest electorates have a disproportionate say in the shape of the next government.

Why have an election day at all? Just have a period and a final day.

Here’s one take on it, but that’s not the whole story. I have been a few teal town hall meetings and a lot of what they talk about is how they have been able to shift some legislation behind closed doors that we don’t hear about. But what we really need is for them to have more power not less through a minority government, so sensible change on things like transparency and reduction of the power of lobbyists can get some traction.

What have they achieved is one question but the real question is what could they achieve!
only the noisiest constituents get to influence an independent…

Was able to vote in about 5 minutes at 12.30, in and out. Never seen it like that ever.

The amount of pre-voting must be huge.
Slower than last time in mine. They cut the registration desks from 6 to 3. But yes pre voting is huge.
It’s funny how people say they have better things to do on Saturday but they stand in line for 2 hours on a week day at a pre poll centre. Can’t be 8 million weekend workers.

Gillard's minority Government, the only one in recent times, was also the most productive Government. If the minority government can pass legislation with independents, I'm comfortable with what the government will get passed through to the Senate, where again I'd prefer the same minority to pass them to law.

When's the last time a PM candidate campaigned with a marginal seat?? Buttonhead could lose his seat tonight.

The senate cross bench is far more green than independent.

Howard lost his seat when his Government lost the election.

You could argue Frydenberg, the heir apparent for the Libs after Morrisson lost, also lost his seat so he couldn't lead the party after the last election

OK, so looks like 3 in a row for the duds. Obviously shows they won't win an election if they can't hold their own seat.

Couldn’t give a *smile* about the overall result. Was akin to a relegation battle, where you are watching two teams battling it out to not get relegated. Not a contest to see who wins the Premiership.

My only interest lies in my own electorate, which is usually a boring and dour no contest, as it’s a safe, safe ALP seat in southern Tasmania. An independent, running on an environmental platform is an outside chance of stealing it this time. Probably doesn’t quite, but at least it’s an electorate to watch this time.

Also interested in the Tasmanian Senate paper. Jaquie Lambie should hold her seat. But an outside chance is Lee Hanson (Pauline’s daughter), who could challenge for it. They are kind of fighting for a similar vote. But Lambie does have a very loyal local following on the north west coast, should see her get over the line.

Hawke lost Wills to a VFL footballer in Phil Cleary.

Dutton was a poor choice for leader. No personality, told us nothing in terms of policies and bland as dog *smile*. Another clone of Matthew Guy in Victoria.
