I use Wireless and just did a Telstra Speed Test:
Download: 29.42 Mb/Sec
Upload: 4.41 Mb/Sec

I find the speed fine, my browsing is acceptable and I have few issues with emailing large files. It's also improved considerably since 4G reached my area. I foresee Wireless getting faster over time and with 50% of internet traffic now being performed on Mobile devices, then the whole business model of the NBN needs to be looked at again.

No, it doesn't. Wireless will never, ever, be as fast as wired internet.

NBN isn't about faster browsing speeds in PRE. It's about enabling new and innovative technologies to take advantage of the speeds available to the entire population.

The fibre is infrastructure. The speeds available on fibre haven't been maxed out yet. They are still finding ways to make the speeds over fibre quicker and quicker. The speeds quoted today are the limits of the end points, not the fibre itself.

I bet if you asked Malcolm T and could assure him of total confidentiality, he too will agree FTTH is the best investment this country could make in technology.

When I use mobile devices, I connect to wireless networks whenever possible, because the speeds are much faster than 3G or even 4G. Guess what these wifi networks connect to poppa?

People who say "wireless will replace everything" don't understand the technology.

Turbull is in another league compared to the smarts or should i say lack of in terms of Abbott. I'm sure it would be apparent to him of this conclusion and arguement but he has to play his part unfortunately. MT should be leader of that party. Monkeys lead the party.

Opposition to FTTH helped to get Murdoch's support and win the election. Abbott's not all that dumb.

When it comes to international relations Abbott is dumb & dumber, he's good at winning mates in the media but utterly hopeless at walking the diplomatic tightrope. And even with his bedfellows in the conservative press, he's causing a fair bit of frustration with his media stonewalling. Abbott will either have to lift his game or he'll become friendless faster than a scorned Ruddbot.

Just good to hear that the Libs haven't broken any promises!

Education union warns of massive Gonski losses

State governments are only guaranteed less than 20 per cent of the funding they stood to gain under a schools deal that has been ripped up by the Abbott government, the Australian Education Union says.

The federal government said this week it would honour only one year of the school funding model, and allocate $230million in 2014 to states that did not sign up to the scheme.

While the government insists it will maintain the same amount of funding for schools over the next four years that Labor had put forward, states that signed up to Gonski fear the new model federal Education Minister Christopher Pyne will unveil next year will strip money from public schools and direct it to the independent sector.

Mr Pyne has committed to maintaining a "sector-blind" approach to funding – treating government and independent schools the same – only in terms of the extra money that disadvantaged children attract. These loadings comprised 17 per cent of Labor's additional funding package, putting the rest of the previously promised money in doubt, the union says.

Australian Education Union deputy president Correna Haythorpe said: "By only committing to deliver around one-fifth of the money on a sector-blind basis, Mr Pyne is clearly signalling he wants to maintain the inequity of the current arrangements and cut the share of money going to public schools."

However, Prime Minister Tony Abbott insisted on Saturday his government had not broken an election promise to maintain the same amount of funding for schools over thenext four years that Labor had put forward.

"This is a government which always keep its commitments," he said.

In a statement, Mr Pyne added: "This is the kind of hysterical fear-mongering we've come to expect from the Australian Education Union."

The point was that choosing the FTTN option model wasn't a matter of being unable to see the benefits of FTTH. It was a calculated political move to buy News Ltd support.

I guess that means me.
So please answer a question I don't understand.
When I'm out and about, say at the footy, and I want to do a mobile search, how do I connect to Wi-Fi?
This confuses me.

I don't know about Australia, but where I am there has been a real surge in free (slow speed and advertising) and paid for (faster) wifi hotspots made available in public areas. It was the fibre infrastructure they laid that allowed companies to provide these.

Unless there is a wifi hotspot at the G you won't b able to connect to wifi.

On wifi, it's dramatically less of a battery hog than pulling data over 3 or 4G but less money for the telcos.

Go into your phone settings and there should be an option to turn Wi-Fi on/off.

Turn it on, and then a list of available Wi-Fi networks in the area will pop up, click on the one you want (MCG, McDonalds etc.) and it will connect you.

Oh yes he is. Would not have a clue on the world stage let alone locally.

"Tony Abbott and the Coalition have confirmed that they will commit the same amount of federal school funding as the Government over the forward estimates. Every single school in Australia will receive, dollar for dollar, the same federal funding over the next four years whether there is a Liberal or Labor Government after September 7."

Abbott porkies.

Massive liars.

Here's Abbott's current version, contradicting Pyne's own website published during the election. Pyne's website even condemns the teacher's union as liars for predicting exactly what is happening! The hypocrisy is breathtaking. -

"Mr Abbott insisted that Education Minister Christopher Pyne had pledged that 'schools' as a whole would get the same amount of money under the new government.

I wonder how long before this happens to Pyne's website -

"Tony Abbott's controversial speeches wiped"

So how much less in $ terms will schools be getting?

The schools will only know once the Government shows them whet they are giving to each school. They've been told the figures they agreed too are no longer valid and new figures will come soon.

Jeannie Little has already said Public Schools will most likely lose some of their funding.

By mobile search do you mean searching for mobiles?

Any figures?

The Education Union is saying public schools will get less than 20% of that promised by Gonski. They obviously have an axe to grind, so who knows how accurate that is.

Mind you, they've now been proved right when during the election they called the lie on the LNP Gonski promise, so maybe they have good mail.
