Talking Politics

Gotta disagree here mate. I recon this aspect was 100% witch hunt. It also shows Abbott, and Co's, form on such things eg Sacking Bracks and appointing a Lib favourite for his position o/s. Man, there really are a huge number of petty things this government has done that just sh!t me.

Never mind pushing Barry Cassidy out of an UNPAID role at old parliament house because of...cronyism?

OK, ready:

Science = good.
Houses = good.
Health = good.
Public ownership of stuff = good.
Monopolies = bad.
Influential miners = bad.
Secret donations = bad.
Climate change = bad.
Immigration = OK.
Australians owning Australian land = good.
Australian citizenships for sale = bad.
Female education = good. (read Congo, Afghanistan and other places with war, poverty, limited opportunities for females and subsequently massive population growth)
Foreign aid = good.
Infrastructure = good.

Moreover, model of endless population growth = bad.

As a great band once said, "a species set on endless growth is unsustainable."

P.S. I admit they could have chosen a better name for their party.

Okay, I have had another look. You are quite right they hit on many of the issues I consider important and that are mostly absent from political discussion. The main one being that growth in the GDP can only be maintained if population grows commensurate with it. There has been much discussion that GDP is actually a faulty indicator and that Gross Progress Indicator GPI (http://www.demos.org/publication/whats-missing-gdp) better captures the effects on the whole of society by including , for instance, parameters that measure inequality. This plays into my annoyance at the use of profit growth to measure the strength of companies. Profit is growth, so profit growth is actually growth ON growth, that is unsustainable and leads usually to anti-competitive behaviour as companies look to acquisition to boost profits which leads to monopolies. But I digress. Yes the name of the party put me off. In an offhand way I would like to see Australia grow but I would prefer to see it prosper so I suppose that means a much more sustainable pace of growth that includes one of my favourite phrases (used on their website) "evidence-based policy" even if that gets terribly confusing for Eric Abetz.

*smile* you Abbott. >:(

The good thing is ToO, he won't be able to keep the smoke blowing until the next election! And if he tries it again, I recon people may... may, finally be a bit wary about the ploy and bulldust! I can hope anyway.

Now it's time to head off and read about the poorly named Sustainable Population Party.

Oh, also found out that the Australian Democrats have allowed themselves to be split into two factions. Really? Amazingly stupid much? Do they think they are a big enough party to do such a amazingly dumb thing...?

And here we go... back into a battlefield that no military action can ever win.

Come home safely men and women of the ADF.

He's got his war now, no doubt this will be at the top of the agenda for the next 12 months and beyond.

He won't be able to get two years out of it though. Fortunately...

From something that started out as a 'we will not be putting boots on the ground... blah blah blah', he again has done a pretty ordinary pirouette in double time.

I have a problem when I know well before time whether a leader will take a nation to war. GW Bush was always going to do it. So was the PM. And that I find a very disturbing thought. Where is the room for argument and evidence in this scenario?

This was just too funny not to share...

Tony Abbott gives top marks to ministers, saying all deserve As or A pluses
Date September 17, 2014 - 4:46PM

Prime Minister Tony Abbott is reviewing the performance of his frontbench but has backed their first year in government, saying his ministers will be getting either As or A pluses.

Speaking in the Northern Territory on Wednesday, Mr Abbott said it was "perfectly normal" to examine the performance of senior MPs, and 12 months after forming government was an appropriate time to do it.

The comments came after media reports on Wednesday that Mr Abbott was holding one-on-one meetings with ministers to identify poor performers after a difficult post-budget period for the government.

The review comes after a series of gaffes by a number of ministers this year, including Attorney-General George Brandis, Senate leader Eric Abetz and Treasurer Joe Hockey, although as senior government figures they are unlikely to face demotion.

"I think some are getting As and some are getting A pluses, but the fact is this is a competent and trustworthy government which promised that we would stop the boats, that we would scrap the carbon tax, build the roads and get the budget back under control and that's precisely what we're doing," Mr Abbott said.

The Prime Minister said his frontbench was being reviewed against "charter letters" he had sent to all ministers and parliamentary secretaries at the beginning of the government.

"It's a perfectly normal dimension to management that you from time to time review progress with your senior personnel and that's exactly what we're doing now," Mr Abbott said.

While a reshuffle is likely at some stage in the life of the government, some people have predicted it could happen as early as the second year.

A poll published last week to coincide with the end of the Abbott government's first year in office ranked Foreign Minister Julie Bishop the most popular minister.

Ms Bishop overtook Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull in the McNair Ingenuity Research survey of 1004 voters.

Treasurer Joe Hockey was named the least popular member of Mr Abbott's 19-strong cabinet.

Mr Hockey, the third most popular minister in a similar McNair poll taken last December, fell to the bottom of the rankings with an approval rating of 32.2 out of 100.

As well as leading the government's budget charge, Mr Hockey made a gaffe in August when he was trying to prosecute the case for proposed changes to fuel excise.

The Treasurer apologised for his comments about car use by the poor in mid August, while the McNair poll was taken in late August.

Opposition Leader Bill Shorten was bewildered by Mr Abbott's remarks.

"Has he really rated them A or A plus?" he said.

"Oh my Lord.

"It sounds like anyone could front up to the Abbott class and get a good mark. I think the government's been a fail when it comes to so many of its election promises."

Yep, all the tough guy talk is making us a bigger target, it's not a matter of 'if' but 'when' we suffer a homegrown terrorist attack.

Yep. Not really what we should at all be about. As I am getting more interested in Politics, as a basis of why things happen in a country, I joined a facebook group that made it sound like the were up for some open discussions about all things, even with having admitted to a 'right leaning' agenda. After reading through a number of posts, I recon the Libs have hit on a winner here! There were so many posts, comments and memes, about the evils of Islam and how most boat people are from middle class backgrounds who have come here to rob us of our money, land and jobs.

I left.

The only single sole reason I can see for getting involved in this conflict is to kiss up to the yanks. IMO nowhere near a good enough reason!

I weep at what Abbott has done to our country in 12 months. How the hell did he get elected? >:( :(

Rupert Murdoch ensured his election, and has received his reward in the form of 700 million in tax write-offs, the decimation of the ABC and the abandonment of the NBN. Abbott is all about self interest, he's effectively a mouthpiece for the fossil fuel industry & the catholic church, and will stop at nothing to protect his brethren.

On a side note, Julie Bishop has effectively walked out of negotiations on emissions targets beyond 2020, seems like Abbott and his cronies are intent on taking us back to the 1900's. The perverse thing is Australia has much to lose as the earth heats up, enjoy the next bush fire season folks.

I was listening to Late Night Live with Philip Adams the other day (I listen on podcast). He was speaking to one of the Dunera Boys. A soldier, a young digger, guarding them upon realising they were Jewish not German sympathisers pulled the bars off the windows and sat down with him. How our country has changed. We now let refugees die of septicaemia.

When i was listening to the report given by Morrison and his cronies about how they have stopped the boats and turned back however many there were a thought came into my mind. I wonder whether he has given one thought to what happened to the human beings on those boats and how they are now living?

Stopping the boats, no matter whether you agree with that policy or not, is in the end shifting a very small part of the 60 million person stateless and refugee problem from Australia to somewhere else.

It has never been anything else.
