Talking Politics

Today he accidentally referenced Tasmania when he meant China, seriously where is this blokes head? I know Labor were on the nose but surely people will never let a protest vote go to these extremes again.

I can't stand the guy but having listened to the audio I don't think there is anything to see here. Just said the wrong word. I do it all the time when tired. Sports commentators do it frequently and don't even notice or get corrected.

Some of his other gaffes (and he has provided many) have given us a glimpse into the way he thinks; and in doing so have been much, much worse IMO.

I was gob smacked when Abbott at the G20 said "we all believe in strong and effective action on climate change."

I can cleary recall Abbott once saying that Climate change was crap.

He will say anything depending on the audience, this is why he can't be trusted. His track record speaks for itself, in his first few days of office he sacked Tim Flannery, he then installed *smile* Warburton the self confessed climate sceptic to undertake an energy review. Knowing that it would be a predetermined outcome he then set the wheels in motion to disband the Climate Change Authority, abandon the Green Bank which was running at a profit and repeal the RET. In the meantime Hockey calls wind turbines hideous and Abbott hails coal as good for humanity. Together they both attempt to ram through legislation to dump coal sediment in the Great Barrier Reef. The COALition are lobbyists for the coal industry, there's no other way to spin it. They think climate change is a communist conspiracy and refuse to accept that coal prices are on a downward trajectory. They would prefer to destroy the renewables sector in a last ditch effort to eke out every last dime for the crony pals. They are so ideologically brainwashed that they refuse to even have a minister for science.

Free Trade Agreement with China, good news or?

I heard we struck up a free trade agreement with Tasmania.

I take it that it must be good for Australia then.

Haven't seen the details so hard to comment. There are FTAs and then there are FTAs.

Why do you think it's good ?

I suspect I'm going to be paying a lot more for my scotch fillet before too long, if that's the case the FTA is a bad thing.

I was told the FTA we signed with Thailand was going to lower the price of the two great Aussie staples: Wine and Cheese here in Thailand.

Did it bollocks - they went thru the roof.

But that did that happen to coincide with the rise in the A$ ?

I never said I thought it was good or otherwise.
I said I take it that it must be good, seeing it never rated a mention here :)
I'm sure there will be some winners and some losers though. Hopefully it will be more positive than not.

Surely if you take something is good it then means you think it's good. But I didn't realise you were just trying to be funny. But not sure what rating a mention here or not means.

FWIW barnaby has said prices of aussie food will most likely increase as a direct result of the FTA with China. Whether that is good or bad would depend on whether you can afford to eat I guess.

Take=surmise Baloo.
Given that generally it's only things negative that the government or Abbott has done or said rates a mention here and the FTA hadn't been mentioned I took it that it must be for the national good. Or otherwise it would have been slammed.
As for to what has made the headlines regarding Joyce's comment, you may need to read the full article rather than the headlines. That puts it in a little more context.
I'm sure you don't actually claim that people won't be able to afford to eat because of the FTA. Surely not.

I agree it was a simple slip of the tongue but why was his brain thinking Tassie when he was talking about China? He gets off too easily for his constant gaffes. Sure the media lingered too long on the "shirtfront" but what the *smile* was he thinking saying it in the first place?

That the PM has got to have the photo op - even if he did think he had done a free trade deal with Tassie for a second- is good for him and his personal standing as a politician. Whether it has any flow on benefits will be very hard to measure. I can only imagine that most of the hard work was done by nominally apolitical public servants over years (this one over a decade I think). My uninformed speculation would be that Australia trying to hammer out a deal with China is a bit like an individual steel worker trying to hammer out conditions with Gina Rinehardt.
