I don't like Shorten's policy but that won't save Abbott either. It mightl help soft liberal voters vote Labor and the leftie Labor voters will vote Green worst case.

Two party preferred will still work for Labor

true i think.
i cant see anyone voting Lib cos they are outraged at Labor's policy. as you say it will push some to the greens but they will most likely still preference Labor.
where it may cost some votes to the Libs is if it causes internal problems. if Labor start bickering that will turn voters off.

I think bickering is inevitable. This decision will also allow Australia's best opposition leader to attack the ALP and shorten as weak and devoid of ideas.

Can't agree with the last part mate. I think a main part of Shorten going with this option is to implement a bit of 'reverse wedge' politics. If G.W.Abbott comes out swinging at Labor about their sticking with turning the boats back, it is a very easy re-joiner to hit him back with, which would have more weight, and make Abbott look silly again, I reckon. With Labor looking to double the number of immigrants, as well as faffing around the edges it will IMO be an improvement on what we have. Still bin, but a less stinky bin...

The thing with Labor heading down this path of 'pathetic politicing' is that they... well... suck at it.

The last time the ALP won power it was because Rudd played "me too" to Howard. It's starting to look like the ALP think that tactic will work again. It won't and it shouldn't.

Politics is spiralling down the bathtub so fast in this country that we're pretty much in the sewer.

Still no positives for Abbott........
Oddly the news reports about Shorten and the asylum seeker policy are stating that Shorten is looking to follow the Liberal Government's successful asylum seeker policy.

That's a really good pick-up JB, and really saddening.

I don't know just where this Govt is leading us, but I do know that I don't like it.

the boats are still coming. so people are not safer from 'drowning at sea' they just wont do it on our doorstep.
they are returning asylum seekers to the regimes persecuting them- the last time they sent people back to vietnam they openly stated they would in no way follow up to ensure their safety.
they are stopping people, with the threat of jail, from reporting on conditions, abuse or the health and well-being of people, including children, we have locked on Nauru.
they are locking people up on Manus Island where one person was murdered, and another died because of a lack of medical treatment.
they cut back the number of refugees were taking. they have now promised to increase them again in a few years.
they have drastically cut aid to areas where these people seeking asylum are coming from.

i could go on.
you might consider this to be a successful policy, news limited surely will consider it a successful policy. but I do not.
they are trying to send refugees to

I didn't imply or state that i thought it was a successful policy, only that news reports were oddly calling it a successful policy.

i did say you might.
it is no surprise much of the media would call it successful.

Paying people smugglers is suddenly 'successful', maybe we should pay all the drug dealers too. :spin

I really want to see Penny Wong lead the ALP. But I think she's too smart to want the job.

I don't know about the rest of you but every time I see Penny Wong I think she must be Rudd's twin brother :-\

Yep, you read correctly mate. Shorten has come out to say that 'his' position is that he thinks Labor made mistakes before and should stick with the Lib's 'turn back the boats' policy. He has also said that he will be taking this position to the ALP conference thing coming up this weekend.

Just when I thought he couldn't sink any lower, he went and proved me all wrong...

The ALP really needs to get.... ummmm... errrrrr.... *coughs*.... as leader

Does anyone think that Bill may be doing a "Malthouse"? Knows he can't win, won't quit, so is making the party fire him so he can say "it's not my fault"?

For me it's more about the novelty factor of having an lesbian asian female as PM. I'm not sure australia could deal with that.

How far wrong am I that Bob Zittrain (thanks spellchecker) thinks his appeasement of the PM's xenophobia is indeed the mood of the people and likely to win office? One of us is on the wrong side of this...

Not sure how drunk I was when I wrote this...actually that kind of does elaborate on how drunk I was...but I think I was talking about boat turnbacks and Shorten's stance. I still can't understand why it is considered "succesful" when the boats are still coming and those being detained are dying (two deaths one from negligence)? Infuriated by the discussion of this on Insiders where they joked about the boat that did breach Australian waters (because the only journalist asking the hard questions was from Buzzfeed Australia - hang your heads MSM) rather than discuss the very serious implication that the boats have not in fact stopped!

Out of interest, would the people that support open borders here, support a policy of open borders with the condition that immigrants have no access to any government welfare for 15 years?

No.
