Talking Politics

The Tone's biggest mistake since Prince Phil is this afternoon denying his Party a conscience vote on Gay Marriage.
IMO This will cost him big time in the polls.

Hopefully the party will dump him as leader and we get someone worthy of the top job. That will then force the opposition to produce a viable alternative.

We might actually get a working political system back.

From the Woman's Day piece, looks like Morrison is being put 'out there' as the leading candidate to take over from George Dubbya Abbott

It was pretty clear that when Tone was looking like losing the leadership the right wing faction started grooming Morrison in an attempt to block Turnball.

Either would be a big step up. Actually, anyone bar hockey and Payne would be a big step up.

Problem with Morrison is he's a complete *smile*, just smarter than Toned Abs, would not want him as PM.

Typhoid or salmonella. Tough choice.

Nice!

Would be somewhat reasuring if there was even a glimmer of Turnbull or Bishop looking like getting the gig. Both are soooo far ahead of George Dubby Jnr II or Morrison, Pyne doesn't even need a mention, that it isn't funny.

So Abbott gets his way in delaying gay marriage until "after" the next election.

In the process he's alienated half the front bench, half his back bench and given Labor a free hit on a popular issue at the election.

Tony's cunning but really not that smart.

seriously, if we want the best in the job we should pay them accordingly thus removing the need for these 'scams'. We just spent over $100 million looking for that bloody malaysian plane. At that rate, we could afford to pay every single person in this country 3 million dollars and have change left over. Wouldn't that equate to some serious quality of life?

Dodgy maths there? If my loved ones went missing with that plane $$$ wouldn't guarantee quality of life. I'd want every effort made to find them.

There are only 33 people n Ausralia now? Feels like there are more to me.

wow, now that just goes to show how important it is to work this stuff out for yourself rather than quote a dodgy internet source!!

I do agree that the plane search of a waste of money. That plane is in pieces on the ocean floor somewhere and will never be found in our lifetimes I reckon.

anyway, dodgy maths, lack of critical thinking and stupid internet quotes aside. I truly believe our politicians deserve to be paid ten times what they are paid now. Not the tools that are in office at the moment, but the thinkers that will be attracted to the office and the incomes made available in the future. Why do we pay our leaders so much less than we pay our entertainers/footballers. You know it makes sense....

I'm happy to pay our government leaders a lot more if they were true leaders making tough strategic long term decisions and not just swinging between repaying their donors for getting elected and then straight into election mode.

The current crop get what they deserve, if not more so.

Our system of 3 years in power prevents any real long term planning that involves short to medium term hardship or perceived hardship.

Negative gearing as an example. Kill it when you only have a 3 year term and you will struggle to survive. Do it at the start of a 5 year term and but the time the election comes around it will be old news. No government has the balls to make a tough decision like that.

Personally I dont think it matters how much you pay them they are still going to want to stick their noses into the trough.

PS: You talk about high paid entertainers, they still love to get their freebies too.

I agree. I've always thought that four year terms would be a great 'enabler' for governments to actually make some progressive decisions, and stick to them without having to look around the bend at the next election coming their way.
