Very good discussion going on in the #lolNorf thread about a Tasmanian team in the AFL. But it needs its own thread.

My thoughts.

1. I've always found it difficult to consider the AFL as a fully national competition as long as there was a traditional Australian Football state that did not have a team in it.
2. I think there is enough evidence to show that newly created expansion teams should only go to traditional footballing states (see the money pits of GCS and GWS), and the Rugby states are where you want to send the smaller Victorian clubs as they hit the skids (Swans, Lions and now Nothing Melbourne).
3. A stadium? Surely there is enough supply and demand from both cricket and football to build a combined stadium that they can share, similar to what has happened in Perth, just a bit smaller. I'm guessing the problem here is the age old one of Hobart and Launceston both wanting a piece of the action.

The AFL don’t want a Tassie team - they stall, wait, conduct another review, procrastinate and then when they can’t stall any longer they keep raising the stakes.

First it was no AFL $ - when every other team gets AFL $ and look what $ they put into Giants and suns every year.
Then the AFL demands that the Tassie Govt needs to commit around $10m per year - Tassie agrees
Then the AFL raises that to $19 or $20m per year
Then lastly the AFL plays it’s trump card and demands this week that the Govt needs to build a brand new $750m stadium and run it which will cost more like $1b. Knowing full well the State doesn’t have that cash to spend.

How long does it take to fully design and build a stadium - reckon it’s a 6 to 7 year project down here if all goes well (things take longer to build as there are the people to throw at jobs like the big cities)

Job done Gill - delayed entry by up to 10 years. I think he is shafting the state big time.

Of course Tassie deserves a team, the people are desperate for a team and have been for decades, the sport is dying here, not slowly, but every year or so another senior club falls over, and Gill doesn’t care.

I reckon Gill knows he can’t get enough presidents over the line, he can’t cause he doesn’t want to.

I reckon Tasmania should give him the finger, tell him to GAGF - because the asking price is now well over $1.2b.

Port played at their crappy Oval for how long and they weren’t made to wait till they had a squeaky new stadium before they joined.

The suns get how much extra per year plus GWS get spoon fed by the AFL.

Gill is a a….hole , he needs to go.

Agree Gill clearly doesn't want this.

Hawks and North - yeah no worries, you guys can play in Tassie in open stadiums.
Tassie team - You couldn't possibly play in an open stadium, you will need to build a new one with a roof.

Gill, how about you *smile* off early and don't let the door hit you on the way out

So WHY don’t Gerry Gee and the AFL want a stand alone Tasmanian team ? Why ?

If it was going to grow the game, be economically viable, produce more revenue etc why wouldn’t they want it ?

I don't think Gill would care that much, I think the club presidents don't want it.

Maybe but the reason giving is bulldust. If its ok for the Hawks and North to play there in an open stadium then its nonsensical to claim that a Tassie team needs a roof.

Oh I agree, but at the end of the day it's the presidents who vote on this.

The votes fine and I'm not saying I agree with a Tassie team either way, I haven't seen the business case, but the excuse they have given is a poor one.

Because in their minds its not a growth market, and its a small market. Tassie footy fans watch games on TV regardless. They are wrong taking the Tassie fans for granted, ethically it stinks and economically the game is on the wane, because of this very attitude, AFL neglect.

Its poor planning and management on the AFLs part for a heap of reasons, which is nothing new, and having taken the stance they are taking, they will have to be dragged kicking and screaming to change it, at least while GM or a minion are the boss. But change it they will.

Just looking at it from one angle, one of many that point to a resounding yes to a Tassie team, why would you keep perpetually subsidising North who don't have many supporters and are going nowhere in a crowded market, but tut tut and resist and baulk at a tassie team on economic grounds, which don't old water anyway?

The McLachlan's arguments against a tassie team are pathetic, and getting more and more so.

McLachlan trying to save face and look big at the last meeting was pathetic, the coverage in the AFL media sycophantic to the boss. Big Gill says to little Tassie 'you need to build a stadium'. Tassie says to Gill, 'yeah no worries, we'll build a *smile* stadium you *smile*'

Yep. Fair argument Snakes Alive on the ethical and game waning front. However, not sure the Norf element is quite that relative when you consider a Tasmanian team is gonna cost a lot more to prop up than Norf.

Didn’t McGuire say you need at least $40m of revenue to be sustainable ? (Cwood and us generate about $70 m don’t we?). If that’s right, and if the AFL is gonna throw $10m pa at it and the state government another $10m pa, then where’s the other $20m pa coming from ?

Economically, can a Tasmanian club produce that year on year ?

At the end of the day, the AFL is a business and whilst it’s all nice and romantic, ethical etc to consider a stand alone team in Tasmania, there’s a heap of business risk associated with it for moderate business reward.

Might have this wrong but the clubs don’t/won’t vote on it if the Commission doesn’t approve it first.

I think if the Commission approves, need 7/18 presidents to vote in favour. If the Commission delegates it to the clubs (which is in effect abstaining, rather than voting it down), need 12/18 of presidents to vote in favour.

Easy, they'll do it with a leg in the air. That wierd art museum at Hobart, where people literally go to watch *smile*, generates $150 mill p.a.!

Yeah, and most people who go there are from interstate or overseas. Hard to see porn loving Engle Strindberg from Germany going to see the Tasmanian Platypuses play at Bellerive Oval in the middle of Winter.

ha ha. Yeah but if they can generate 150, the Platypuses can generate 20 all day long, more like 50 or 60 IMO. Engle from Germany isn't going sure, although he or she may see some cultural and artistic merit in a game of footy, but Wayne from penguin is. And so are the opposition fans.

Yep. That’s how I understood it. Except I think the Commission can nix it completely if it wants to as a level down from abstaining and not even let it get to the clubs.

I think Gerry Gee is manoeuvring to nix it or at least, delegate to 12 of 18 clubs.

Nah. Wayne from Penguin isn’t going either. It’s over 3 hours in the car on a shitty single lane road to Hobart for the most part, in the middle of a Tasmanian Winter, to go see a struggling team that can’t keep players and is in the bottom 3 year on year. He’ll stay at home to tend to his hydroponic interests instead and watch his beloved Pies that his family has followed for generations on tv.

He's clever, he'll want the latter as it gives the AFL plausible deniability and the presidents are the bad guys.

ha ha, fair enough Wayne was a bad example, but they'll get enough.
