Pretty hard to convey how massive The Seekers were in the 60s. A phenomenon in the UK. Even made it in the US.
Might not have a lot of cred in the music world these days but Durham is a true legend of Austealian popular music.

Seekers always looked and sounded a bit old school to me, especially with that double bass. But they could sure as hell write a good tune and Judith Durham had a great voice. Who cares the impression they give when they can make good music.

RIP Judith.

Easy to put the massive into perspective. Melbourne's entire population in 67 was approx 2.2 million. Seekers drew approx 200,000 to a concert at the music bowl. Population now is approx 5.1 million so they'd be drawing approx 465,000 to the gig. Think of another band that could even come close.
Easy listening pop music wasn't my go as a young tacker growing up but the Seekers were huge n Judith had a voice to shiver the spine.

That concert at the Myer music bowl was also televised, by the ABC i believe.
It was huge. Even my parents watched it and their record collection was Mantovani, anything by Rogers & Hammerstein and plenty of Gilbert & Sullivan
They were probably the last big “pop” act accepted across the generations.
Judith was a star

RIP beautiful lady. I'm really saddened by this one. Fell in love with her watching Grease as a kid, in lust with Physical, and always held her in the highest esteem as a woman of grace, charm, humour and heart. Same age as my mum and reminded me of her a lot.
