Competition for spots is a real thing inside football clubs.I find comments like this intriguing and there are many in this thread and Dows' sadly. The new boys have not played a single game of AFL - who knows what they will develop into and when, they could all be busts. Meaning how can you even make a comparison if they have zero AFL games under their belt. Both Dow and Sonsie have at least AFL experience and know what it entails and we can only hope they both can go to another level next season.
It is a tough gig to play consistent AFL football. Dow and Sonsie know this - all they can do is give it their best and I have no doubt they have been to where their development is. They would be seeing this as an opportunity to step up, given all the senior players who have now dropped off. I bet also they are seeing it is an opportunity to lead the way for the new boys. I don't buy they suddenly see themselves on notice or have competition or have to pull their finger out. They would be relishing the opportunity to integrate and team with the new recruits and to take on a more senior role.
I played a reasonably high level of football and I can tell you for a fact when a new guy turns up vying for your position, you either accept it or you do everything in your power to compete for it. Being on the edge doesn’t work for everyone but it does bring out the best in the competitive types.
There's also so much insecurity floating around football clubs, especially amongst the players that haven’t established themselves in the best 22. They’re living in a heightened state of fear of being overtaken or delisted.
