Vic U18 Cup: Krakouer of a time
30 May 2005   Herald Sun
Rebecca Williams

http://www.heraldsun.news.com.au/footy/common/story_page/0,8033,15445863%255E19897,00.html

AN IMPRESSIVE on-ball performance from Myles Krakouer helped lead Oakleigh Chargers to a 24-point win against Bendigo Pioneers at Queen Elizabeth Oval yesterday.

Krakouer, the son of former Kangaroo Phil, was Oakleigh's best player in the come-from-behind victory, which gave the Chargers two straight wins for the first time this season.

The Chargers trailed the winless Pioneers at every change before storming home with an eight-goal-to-two final quarter.

Oakleigh coach Rohan Welsh said the performances of Krakouer and midfielder Dean Kelly, who played on Bendigo star Joel Selwood, were pivotal to the win.

"Myles Krakouer was terrific for us today around the stoppages, and his use of the footy was really good," Welsh said.

"I think it was just about his best game for the club. And Dean Kelly, playing across half-back and in the midfield, was also terrific. He did a good job on Selwood in the second half."
Key forward Beau Dowler also impressed with his strong marking, kicking three goals.

Selwood, the brother of West Coast's Adam and Brisbane Lions' Troy, was best for the Pioneers, the only team yet to win a game.

In Saturday's games, Murray Bushrangers continued their impressive form with a 42-point win against the Western Jets at Wangaratta.

Forward Adam Prior kicked three goals to take his tally to 32 for the year and is second on the goalkicking table.

Dandenong Stingrays were equally dominant, defeating the NSW/ACT under-18 team by 43 points at Shepley Oval. Brad Horaczko, who kicked three goals, was best-afield for Dandenong.

A five-goal haul and best-on-ground performance from Lachlan Hansen steered Gippsland to a 43-point victory against the Sandringham Dragons at Morwell.

Gippsland's Jay Neagle also kicked three goals to maintain his position at the top of the goalkicking table (35).

Calder Cannons defeated the Northern Territory by 52 points at Marrara Oval, Darwin.

Small forward Fortunato Caruso continued his impressive form in front of goals to finish among the Cannons' best with three majors.

Tassie Mariners defeated fifth-placed Geelong Falcons, while Queensland lost to the North Ballarat Rebels.

Hey Phantom

Have you had a chance to see Shaun Grigg from the North Ballarat Rebels play?

i played football with him for Redan FC up until U/16's when i moved up here to Brisbane.

if so, what do you think of him and his chances of playing AFL?

Although I havent seen him play yet, I have been following his stats.
Shaun Grigg Redan, NBR, 187,77, b.19/4/88
He averages 13Ks + 7HBs = 20 disps, 4 mks, 3 tckls & 1 goal per game.
So his stats are good enough.
He has made the Vic Country Squad, and I look forward to seeing him in the Trials at Princes Park, I think, over the long weekend.

Thanks for that

Hes a great player with a very stron gmark and very acurate kick on both feet.

I remember the last season i played with him..... He only played 4 games due to injury and rep football and led the goal kicking till about 2 rounds left and kicked about 35-40 goals playing from the midfield, he absoutley dominated the BFL, no one was a match for him.

He also played for the Australian U/16 or 17 this year but im not sure how he went.

Will be great to see him make the AFL, would be his dream come true, as well as his father's lol

would be good to see him in Richmond colours even though hes a mad Essendon supporter :p

I must admit that his name didnt click with me at the start, then I found out that he may not have been on the original list for Eastern at the start of the season. He seems to be an add-on to the list.

Michael Fowkes - no.31
b.28/10/88, 188cm, 74kg, HFF/FP
4 games, 4 goals, 3 bhds, 14K, 6HB, 5HBR, 5M.
Ave: 1 goal, 1 bhd, 3-4K, 1-2HB, 1M per game.
He'd have to quadruple that output to have a chance at an AFL career.

Apparently Pat Fountain, tall player for Sandringham, got his first game last weekend - did you hear anything of him?
Also - any more news/stats on Tomi Johnston?

Yes I remember looking at Pat Fountain's name & dimensions in the record from the 1st round. 200cms & 89kgs. Unfortunately I dont remember him playing that day against Oakleigh.

His game last wkd against Gipps was nothing to rave about. 2 ineff kicks, 3 HBs, 2 mks, 18HOs. But it was only his first game this season. Hopefully he'll improve.

But I must admit Tomi Johnston has improved. He's now averaging 13-14 HBs per game. He got close to 30 possies last wkd, but it was only the 2nd game out of 8 that he's boomed. Mind you he's probably averaging 20 possies a game which, for a lower-aged junior playing in a poor side, is not a bad effort. And his game last wkd was against Gipps, the near best side in the comp this season. Yes, he's coming along nicely.

Patty Fountain will probably get another gig this weekend I would think. Did a couple of nice things in the ruck apparently.
Tomi is getting alot of the bal, and using it well. He has cracked the best probably 5 of the 8 weeks, which, as you said for a lower-aged junior isn't a bad effort. I don't think he will be touched this year, but give him next year to develope in strength and height, I rekon he's a real shot.
