After reading the HS today I am more confused than ever.

Every man and his dog have a view as to how to "fix" our game.

Eade has his say, yesterday Scott had a go, today Gill wants some changes and Robbo has an analysis.

Clarkson also thinks he has the answers.

What a mess.

Don't they realize this season is nothing like the past and looks very different to past seasons.?

As if the game is not already stuffed due to the new format.

My fear is that if all these changes were to happen then our game would bear no resemblance to what is was and loved by all.

Thoughts??

A 1000 cooks 1 pot.
What else can they do to ruin the game?
Can anyone tell me, what has the 6-6-6 rule done to actually change the game?
Has the kick in rule changed anything?
Theyre trying to turn it into a complicated fix, Where with 2 or 3 basic changes, (without changing the game) it can be fixed.
Umpires are front and centre to 90% of the on field issues.
*They wait 3 hours to bounce the ball.
*If the player has Pior opportunity, free kick straight away.
Some free kicks in the north/hawthorn game that weren't paid were a joke.
Degoey, 2 weeks in a row is slung 360 in a tackle again no call.
Wake up umpires.
*You can hand ball 20 metres without a stop in play, but you can kick 11 metres and the play can stop, its a joke. Footscray & Geelong constantly kick 10 metre passes and the umpires award marks. 20 metres from now on.
And the last one,
* interchange only 8 a qtr (16 minute qtrs) 10 (20 minute qtrs).
The zip fix.
People are comparing football today to 25 years ago, 40% of the player's playing today wouldnt have survived a single season back then.
So lets stop comparing it.

Here are some more having a go.

The problem with DaSantos and Montanga's idea's are, we already have them in place at punt rd.
We kick 20 metes and its called play on. Ive lost count how times we have been called to play on, on a pass that 90% of other teams would get paid a mark.
Im not too sure if Montanga has watched many of our games.
We take possession of the ball after a mark and the umpires call play on within 3 seconds.
Not too sure there idea's will change anything on our end.

Stop building under 12 sized crowds, that would help.
I barely see rolling mauls at the MCG or at the Adelaide oval.
Its always that *smile* ground at Sydney and that pathetic ground at docklands.
I can't ever remember a game at VFL park that looked anything like what we saw in hawthorn/ North game.
Its funny that they sooked and whinged that VFL park was too cold and tooo far away but today its basically the centre of the metropolitan area.

Agree one-hundred percent GS. This is bizarro season - don't go making rule changes on the basis of five rounds in a pandemic environment.

So Zips. You also want to change things. Not stupid ideas I must admit, but why change the game for what some commentators are suggesting?

The rule changes aren't actual rule changes but to concrete into umpires what holding the ball is, what 15 metres looks like, how long is 7 seconds.
Everything i mentioned is umpire based. Stick to the laws of the game.
They pick and choose from club to club when to make a call.
How free's have we had in our forward 50? 4
how many against? 15

MCG is 161 x 138.
VFL park had the boundary line marked to be same size as MCG so that won't have produced more open play at Waverley. It's all about player fitness and coaching tactics, flooding up and back as we see in every game. Play stops around the centreline while they wait for team mates to run forward. In the past we avoided that problem by having a couple deep forward and getting it quickly to them but now we are being stopped at HB to Centre so we can't get it down to Lynch/Jack/Castagna fast enough before they are swamped with defenders around them.

Marvel is 1m shorter and 9m narrower, same as Punt Road now, so if we train on that size ground we should be used to it. We have had many good wins at that ground so if we lose it's not the fault of the ground.

Got it Zips. Agree. Is it just some of us on here that think the Umps don't give us a fair go. Maybe all clubs think the same eh??

When you start putting rules on top of others rules you know it’s a loser.
Just making the game more confusing.

What was that AFL add in the 90’s “Aussie rules football, what rules?”

We have more *smile* rules then Rome.

Just like PRE, everyone knows how to fix the problem at hand, be it rules, game style, coaches or selections. Everyone has an opinion.

It was only in the latter years of waverly park the boundary was drawn to the MCG dimentions

I'm with Clarko - pay holding the damn ball.
I'm with Dal - increase the distance for a mark. 11.6m kicks are being paid. Umpires are giving the benefit to the short side, it should be the other way around - if in doubt, call play on.
I like Montagna's idea too.
Garry Lyon mentioned what I've been saying for years - call a ball up sooner, and throw the ball up immediately, without waiting for ruckmen and six others to get there. Whoever's there can contest, the object after all is to get the ball moving again. *Oh, it'll mean the death of ruckmen!* Who gives a *smile*. The good ones will adapt, the dinosaurs will get what comes to dinosaurs.

And recruit footballers to be umpires.

its a morons mess... and this is not the time or season to start reinventing the wheel... again...
Society has gone off axis because of Covid19 and what we are seeing is a scramble to make things feel right...
..but thing is... it isn't, and won't be for awhile ..
the AFL chatter is symptomatic of the 'chook with its head cut off' syndrome that is currently permeating the world ..

Theyve been paying

'Holding the man who dropped the ball'

This year, which really *smile* me off.

If they keep paying that, get KB in as a specialist coach

Round 3 & 4 average score * 1.25 = 74.3 (* 1.25 to extrapolate from 16 minute quarters to 20 minutes)

Lowest scoring in consecutive rounds since 1989 R12 & 13

Looks like the extra energy from short quarters is going into defence.
