I always feel the current modern era started 26 years ago in 1994, because that when the top 8 finalists commenced.
A lot of people whined that it would reward mediocrity but it rarely has.
Most of the 26 GFs have been contests between the top 4.
The exceptions are:
2019: Richmond 3 v GWS 6.
2016. Western Bulldogs 7 v Sydney 1
1999. North 2 v Carlton 6
1998. Adelaide 5 v north 1.
It doesn’t happen often.
