IMO it is a real concern that RFC drafted not only a 27 year old (28 at the start of next season) but a player who is from the other side of the country and who has four young children and probably has extended family in Perth. It is surely a very big ask by the RFC to have Pickett either (a) move to Melbourne now and leave his wife and children and extended family behind in Perth (and not be able to play football for 8-10 weeks anyway due to injury) and miss his family badly and have no certainty of playing senior football this year or next year or (b) uproot his wife and children from Perth to Melbourne and have the difficult and expensive task of finding suitable accommodation, schooling, childcare etc and still have no certainty of playing senior football this year or next year. Just seems pretty risky overall. I would have preferred that the club drafted a younger player from Victoria, perhaps one of our VFL listed players. At the end of the day, Pickett better be damn good player for the RFC to make all of the upheaval worthwhile.

arguably he's more emotionally mature to be able to deal with the upheaval than a 17-18 year old who has no certainty of playing senior football for 2-3 years.

If he didn't want to do it he wouldn't have nominated.

A realisation that the 10 year window (20-30 yo on average) may have passed him and the prospect of making some serious coin for himself and his family commits him to making every post a winner. If successful could earn $350K pa as a 29yo.. Some that finally see this have long left the system. Marlion gets a chance to set his family up and you would think the motivation alone will see him (baring long term injuries) play some very good football for Richmond. A solid/good 2020 may even see him want to return to Freo/WC (if the family does not settle well here) and sets up Richmond nicely for a trade to be done too. Lots up upside to Marlion playing good football at Richmond.

First things first - finger 100% right - VFL - and we'll go from there,

Did you see his tape? He is damn good and he's been training hard trying to get selected for AFL for the last few years. His wife and 4 kids are coming to Melbourne soon, maybe even this weekend, so he'll soon feel very comfortable except for our cold weather! Richmond are very experienced at helping players re-locate. The fact that he has a wife and 4 kids to support is probably part of the incentive for making it at AFL so he can earn a higher wage to look after them properly and perhaps his extended family back in WA.

My main question is .... Why did we not draft him last year or even the year before?

Same situation as Kelly.

Worst case he comes in and plays really well for year and has to go home for family reasons. We get a good draft pick or a homesick Victoria. Win Win I say.

For Snarlin’ Marlin Failure is not an option.

He’s doing it for his Partner & his Kids. When he gets his opportunity later this year he will tear it up.

He spent 2 & 1/2years in the Big House, didn’t start in the WAFL ‘till 2013,so there will be plenty on the other end of his Career.Marlion will carve out a special niche for himself with Richmond and provide his Family with a comfortable life style.

Can’t wait to see him in the Yellow & Black.

Not that your comment bothers me at all, but how would you react if someone else had posted it?

would depend entirely on context and intent, as always.
