Ablett goal in the 1st should have been overturned.
It wasn't touched but Henderson turned his back on the play and impeded Grimes.
Free kick.
They never pay those. (Unless you're Richo in 1996!)

Exactly. It's not as simple as pay every free all the time. The game would be unwatchable if it were.
True. When I say pay every free, I mean the blatant ones (holding the man, throwing the ball) not incidental contact. My issue is with the license to cheat 'let it go' gives players. Punish the blokes who are deliberately cheating.

Even if the Clangerfield 50m penalty was technically correct (ball not delivered to the free kick recipient) - how on earth was Lynch not entitled to a 50m penalty when he was having a shot from about 50m out and a Geelong player clearly encroached “the area”?
Herd Razor banging on on SEN about being sensible and let common sense prevail when players may not have heard who had the free and it's what his coaches always tell them, then he did that! As you say, technically correct, but seriously.

Try a fun game for yourself.

Freeze frame any midfield contest in a game of footy, and count the free kicks.

You'll invariably find a hold of the arm, a tug of the jumper, a block, or a push.

If you play back any pack mark in slow mo, you'll find blocks, holding, high contact, and finger tips touching the ball before it gets marked.

Don't get me started on Ruck contests. Every single Ruck contest either has every free or none. And they seem to always get that backwards.

Most players kicking out run 15 metres without bouncing, in fact, most players who go on blistering runs outstrip their 15 metres without bouncing.

Some of Edwards' greatest quick handballs are throws, alot of Dusty's don't argues have a finger tip on the throat, a lot of Graham's tackles drive a head into the ground.

If you really wanted to, you could blow your whistle during literally any contest in a game at random, and then find a legitimate free kick that's technically there.

It's a really stupid game in a lot of ways. The umpires are always gonna do it tough. But the best ones ignore the incidental, insignificant Frees they see (seeing you're going to not see 80% of them anyway). The worst ones are Razor Ray.
Agree 100%.

The best umpires impose themselves immediately on the contest and pay the first couple of frees. This sends a message to every player on the ground that they are on notice. Then they gradually ease off and only pay the obvious ones. Late in a close game, they let as much go as they can.

And nobody notices.

Razor Ray is more interested in his exaggerated, attention-seeking disco-dancing calls and, now that he is miked up, its also about spouting his nonsense on prime time.

Thank Christ he’s an emergency only. Saw the 6 named in the record and thought no please don’t let him be one of the on ground umpires. I think GWS will be just as pleased. He’d be the most hated umpire ever.

I’m not trying to argue with you general. My point is nothing more than imo when a game has less free kicks it’s generally a better game to watch. That’s just an opinion of course
Dunno. Reckon as soon as the maggots put the whistle away the game degenerates into wrestle mania. Simply want the maggots to adjudicate the rules consistently n to the same standard to both teams.
If they pay insignificant frees then pay them all game and to both teams. If they let the players have a crack then so be it, don't start suddenly guessing n interpreting insignificant contact half way through the game.

Oooooh happy happy joy joy. The Chamber pot to remain unused n unloved on the sidelines. Might have to bring a packet of peanuts n see if I can hoop a couple in from the boundary at half time.

Exactly right. Umpires should not be noticed, they are not the stars of the show, they are the support staff.

The umpiring department should have pulled Ray up a long time ago and told him that the best umpires don't get noticed, and to STFU.

Umpiring has been nowhere near as bad as the past two years. Our free kick differential is -4 since the bye.

It's taken them a while, but I think the umpires finally perceive us as a good side and have ceased the undue scrutiny of our players.

GWS on the other hand are the top team for frees against.

Most em are against Mummy :))

I don’t know where to start here.

I’ll give you some examples. When a player is tackled I want a fairly liberal time to get rid of it but I want that consistently. When there is a marking contest I want to see an allowance for some contact being made rather than minor incidental contact being paid a free. I want to see an understanding that ruckman will grapple.

I want those and others adjudicated consistently during a game.

As for your ridiculous comment. I’ll let it go because it’s grand final week

Dream on, you will get no consistency if you pay some of the free kicks you see and don't pay others. WTF is common sense? Can you define this?

I would like to see the rule regarding prior opportunity, and the fact that it is only holding the ball if you attempt to illegally dispose of the ball, consistently applied too, but that is definitely not going to happen if you tell the umpires not to pay every free they see - which ones do they pay and not pay, how do they decide, who are they going to reveal this to? Consistency will only happen if you give them the rules and the interpretation to pay frees that are there and don't pay frees which are not there. If you bring multiple definitions of "common sense" (inevitable given we have multiple umpires) into this you get the sort of discretion we see from our friend Mr Chamberlain, I have no idea what he thinks common sense is, doubt it is anything like what any one of us would say.

And what's with umpiring finals differently from the H&A games, ludicrous. What other sport does this? Oh, it's finals now, we weren't adjudicating by the rules earlier, now we're going to be even more lax in our adjudication.

I don't expect perfection but I do expect consistency. So they should only pay frees when so called common sense tells them to pay the free? We can all see the inconsistent mess that is created when that is the case.

I never think the “if the free is there pay it” argument holds up. If every free that was technically there in a game was paid we would have about 200 frees a game.

What I want is umpires to use common sense in interpreting the rules so that the game flows and generally less frees helps that as long as they are consistent in that interpretation. Consistency is the key.
I only want to see blatant frees, no 50/50s and only frees that actually impact the play.

If x is holding y and it’s 60m off the ball, who cares?

Got my hope up there whoever posted he was going to be an emergency. Just googled it he's most likely in, but will be officially announced at a Presser tomorrow. Fox sports article says:
'Simon Meredith is expected to be named as the emergency umpire.'
