Alex Rance

probably a negative thought , but there is a part of me that is a little bit relieved ,

There seemed to be a bit of negativity developing towards him in recent times ,( remember the diving allegations and all the carry on ) , there was an element that seemed to enjoy putting him down, particularly magpie supporters

I was concerned he may struggle getting back to his best , and the haters would have a ball with that....... that would *smile* me off ,

Well at least I dont have to worry about that now

Was reported on Fox Sports that Richmond are going to keep him on the list and continue to pay him throughout 2020. Apparently he’s contracted for another two years. Guess they must hold out some sort of hope that maybe it’s not all over just yet.

I cal BS on that call. If it's Rance's decision to quit he's broken his contract. Tigers need to hold him to his word. Can't keep all those dollars and a list spot unused.

Tony Sheahan claiming Alex Rance is considering retirement at end of year. Want to go travelling with his wife in 2020. Is this Sheahan bloke any good?
Son of Mike and sister of Kate, who is an employee of the club, he'd have pretty good oil i reckon.

I suspect it is that RFC will keep him on the list, his $ will be counted in the salary cap but he won’t be getting paid. Rance wouldn’t expect to be paid either.

that
Wow, there is some slop appearing on this thread regarding religion and Alex's motivations. I'm sorry Raoul, this is not personal. You have expressed your opinion, I respect that. My experience and opinion is that the above is a generalised modern cut and paste view of religion and the followers of such.

I dont think so. He is entitled to religion, definitely. I respect its importance to him and his right to follow it. But i'll always have a right to free-thought about it and post it on the internet. Basically, Alex lives in a country where 50% of the population doesn't think religion exist. Thats the world he has to live in when making that decision.

As someone who does not believe in religion, I can respect Alex's right to have it - but at the same time feel sad that he can't feel both his passion for footy, richmond and his teammates could not live alongside his passion for god and his family. To quote the lil taco girl...... Why not have both?

As "brave" a decision he is making for himself, it's a totally gut-wrenching one for his teammates that literally cried tears on the field when he did his knee. He had 40 teammates just chomping at the bit to win another flag with & for him. Thats not just nothing because "god" is involved. He was part of a team and based on the fact Grimes only saod 2 days ago he looked incredible at training, he has 40 blokes who just had a giant fart in their face a week before Xmas. They would be pretty gutted, i am sure they will say "theyare happy for him" - but deep down, you would have to be thinking WTF mate?

Add to that the timing of it being after the draft, before Xmas - the fact his message was not very convincing and seemed a little passionless and methodical - & finally he was, indeed, contracted (perhaps with an escape clause for this) - Rance may have been a flawless player when it came to on and off the field during his career - unfortuantely his retirement was not handled as such.

Still love the guy and am so thankful for what he did for the club. He changed the unchangeable. Sad his retirement was way too soon, especially since he was apparently very fit and prepared for 2020.

Keeping him on the list would be odd as it would keep his salary as part of the salary cap and also not allow us to recruit someone in.

So Rance finishes on 200 games and having been All-Australian five times it can be said that more than half those games were as the best full-back in the league - not a bad record!

There were a couple of promising key backs (Dyson Hilder, Karl Finlay) who weren’t picked up in the draft so I wonder if we might bring one of them in for training with view to signing as an SPP.

A couple of random thoughts

His religion is irrelevant. Why go there.

Could have kept brando if rance had made the call in September. I am pretty annoyed about the timing.

But overall just sad that we won't get to see this champion play again. I was sad when he got injured. More upset now. Unbelievable competitor and given our history of mediocrity, will never take it for granted watching players of the calibre of dusty, rance, riewoldt, etc. play for our club.

Not sure if serious, Olds. Seamlessly, would have been the answer. How did Bradman slot back into the batting line-up after missing the 1935 tour of South Africa? (Well, he did make two ducks in his first three Test innings back, then he went on a blitz, scoring 82, 13, 270, 26, 212, 169, 51, 144*, 18, 102*, 103, 16 - 1216 runs at an average of 121, before WWII interrupted him, coincidentally at the age of 30. That's the kind of renaissance I was expecting from Rance.)
Not seriously comparing cricket in the 1930s to AFL football are you?

ah, because its the reason he retired. It goes where it goes.

You are right thought, the fact its religion is irrelevant. If any generational talent retired at the peak of his career to focus on his passion be it God, or his toy train collection, id be reacting the same. People reacted the same When Michael Jordan retired to play baseball. No one was happy for him, they were disappointed. Zero warm and fuzzies .

Tell you what they did love though, when he came back. Second best return since Jesus it was.

Good point on Brando. And that it's sad we'll never see him play again. His religion though, appears to be central to his decision.

No. I'm comparing one GOAT with another.

Not to disrespect Brandon, but no way was he gonna get anywhere near the coin he's now on had he stayed regardless of if we had it to pay. Him and his management would have understood our list profile and his position on it, hence the fact the deal was done a long way out.

Could have easily found the extra 200k to pay brando, if rance's salary was excluded. Obviously brando not in the same conversation as a player, but clearly a loved teammate and clubman.

If not brando, money could easily have been used elsewhere.

Gonna be a lot of sad, old white dudes out there. This is definitive proof that Allah the Great is a bigger AFL fan than the great Holy-Moley Jehovah

Ball dont lie

Its really hard to swallow, and initially I was in shock,

But now I reckon its a great thing for the club and all of us. Here's 6 quick reasons why

1. We remember Rancey at the height of his powers, not getting 9 kicked on him by Josh Schache in 2024. Age will not weary him. Only the smartest sportspeople go out at the top
2. We consolidate and build our future. we have spare cash and cap space to retain and play kids like Stackman and Criminal Jones (and Ive got a hunch that CJ will take some retaining)
3. We win more premierships, just like the ranceless last one
4. Grimesy racks up the AA blazers, and Love Machine probably gets a few too now.
5. We won't have to shell out for any more kids books, which if we are being honest with ourselves, are pretty *smile*.
6. Its now entirely safe to assume his knee would have buckled round 1 2020

thanks for the memories Rancey and enjoy your retirement.
