Alex Rance

Just a strange one , even Caesar the other day noted in one of his training reports about how hard he was going at it. Christ on prelim night on my way to my motel going down Punt Road spotted him doing laps as we were stopped at the lights, i thought geez his season is over & there he was still at it.

On a positive, his last qtr v the Swans in 2014 up in Sydney where we were going for 9 straight to make the finals was as good as it gets, i will never forget that.

So he's fully recovered but worried about doing the knee again?

He's not making a strong case!
His rationale/logic about not wanting to retire because of his knee just seems rather flawed to me. In effect he has retired because of his knee because he hasn't played any football or any other sport at all since he got the ACL injury. He hasn't actually really tested the knee at all, not even under any competitive training situation or match simulation. I know we all ultimately have to respect his final decision but I can't help but be very disappointed that he didn't at least give it a go in a couple of practice matches. Maybe being out of the game for the whole season and missing the finals he had lost a bit of passion and love for the game but actually playing again, even in practice matches, may have rekindled any lost passion and love of the game.

Rance mentions the timing in his video interview with Richo. Said he didn't want his knee to be a factor in his retirement. It's now that he considers himself no longer injured that he could make the decision based on what was important to him. i.e. retirement wasnt forced on him.

If that is the case it makes it entirely more selfish. Greatest defender I've ever seen but a religious nutjob all the same. I only hope Alex doesn't believe in contraception (apparently up to the individual in JW) and produces a stable of youngsters.

I was actually wondering how he’d slot back into a backline that had learned to live without him.
Not sure if serious, Olds. Seamlessly, would have been the answer. How did Bradman slot back into the batting line-up after missing the 1935 tour of South Africa? (Well, he did make two ducks in his first three Test innings back, then he went on a blitz, scoring 82, 13, 270, 26, 212, 169, 51, 144*, 18, 102*, 103, 16 - 1216 runs at an average of 121, before WWII interrupted him, coincidentally at the age of 30. That's the kind of renaissance I was expecting from Rance.)

Oh well, not to be. Another victory for the dark forces of organised religion. God can go *smile* herself.

Could someone please remind us of his top 5 or 10 games? It would be good to go back and watch him at his absolute best.

Maybe that's why he decided to keep playing in 2015 when he considered retiring. Now at 30 years old his priorities on what he wants to do with his life may have changed. I don't quite understand the timing but Rance has always been a different cat. Can't always understand someone but after giving so much to the Tigers it's worth respecting his decision.

Perhaps. Does seem to me though that any religious zealot loves to also play Martyr,. For some reason they think that makes them hollier.

If for as much as i love Rance, if he chose religion over footy and his supporters - then i do find that disappointing. The unforgiving nature of religion that, apparently, cant allow for Rance to both honor his god and provide happiness for his supporters, ie millions of humans - is not a religion or opinion i can share. People might say, "respect his decision of faith" , but as religion has never "respected the lives of those who live" - such as gays, abortion etc etc - i don't see a lot of reason to see this as a "feel good story. I am personally sad for him. I respect him a hell of a lot, perhaps my favorite player & afl person of all time - but retiring at 30 after rehabbing from a knee reco and your team coming off the back of a Premiership where they all would have gave anything for YOU to be there..... in all of the interviews immediately after the GF, nearly every player and official praised Rance andthey all would have just loved for him to be a part of it. a big part of 2020 would have been getting there for "Rance".

To walk away from that team, scenario at this moment is just sad. Feels like a martyr thing. The passion looks there and i think thats why i find his message a bit forced. He clearly looked all year to be a guy that wanted to be playing more than anything

JW don’t have or do Xmas, Easter and such so irrelevant, my money is on the knee not being 100 % given he needed a clean up a few weeks ago

Why wouldn't you just say so then? If that was the case why open the whole situation up to all this innuendo?

You clearly have no clue as per my previous post. Your ignorance is showing and you should stop with the bigotry.
Who's next on your list? Bachar?

Maybe being out of the game for the whole season and missing the finals he had lost a bit of passion and love for the game but actually playing again, even in practice matches, may have rekindled any lost passion and love of the game.

That's what I wondered, whether he's come back to pre-season and just isn't feeling the hunger after training for most of last year.

Hmm, Rance (and his religion) has a right to his beliefs. He may still respect people even though he doesn't agree with their beliefs. I don't remember Rance ever forcing these beliefs down people's throats despite his opportunity to do so. Rance actually did play MANY years of good footy despite his religion's beliefs so it doesn't match your conclusion that Rance couldn't honour his god and also provide happiness for supporters. To me it's obvious Rance sees a bigger picture now than footy in his life. Good luck to him. Nevertheless, if he comes knocking on my door, he's only getting in if he dons a Tiger jumper and takes a group photo in front of our 2017 premiership poster and signs it :)

Hang on I'll just pull the list out of my back pocket lol
Yeah, guess I was asking who follows it more closely than you or I. I'm sure someone here can name a few of his best games without keeping a list, it is the @#$&* Punt Road End after all.

Wow, there is some slop appearing on this thread regarding religion and Alex's motivations. I'm sorry Raoul, this is not personal. You have expressed your opinion, I respect that. My experience and opinion is that the above is a generalised modern cut and paste view of religion and the followers of such.

Beautiful interview with Richo. Clearly stated why he wanted to retire. Football has taken over his life and doesn't leave much for his family or religion.

So articulate and well reasoned. Whether we like his religion or not, he has been a wonderful player and we should be grateful he played for us.

Champion without a doubt would have been a bonus this year having him there, but I sensed it coming we did it last year without him the flag so were in no new headspace someone to step up simple as that. Guys keep the politics out of it.

Was reported on Fox Sports that Richmond are going to keep him on the list and continue to pay him throughout 2020. Apparently he’s contracted for another two years. Guess they must hold out some sort of hope that maybe it’s not all over just yet.
