But in some ways you probably don't because you likely didn't do the work and make the sacrifices required to make it.

Incorrect, I wasn't good enough.

I generally work 16 hours a day as a Regional GM for MNC living in Asia (been in Asia for 17 years now), hard work was and never has been an issue for me.

Im fine to agree to disagree but to cast aspersions on others you don't know probably not the best way to make a point.

There was a general health warning about the smoke haze over Melbourne especially to avoid excessive activity outdoors. This obviously excludes footy players!! But seriously, my office is in Knoxfield and I couldn’t see the Dandy Ranges which are only a few km’s away. It was putrid and surely can’t be good for your lungs? Would have trained them indoors
I live out that way , went for a walk earlier , no problem unless suffering from chronic lung disease

Agree. There’s a lot of soft *smile* around these days.
When I was kids we use to dip the tennis balls in petrol and set them on fire and have a game.

Me and a mate nearly blew ourselves up (and a few cars) doing that one night.

No offence to Ghost of 29........

But seriously - when did we all remove logic and brains?

Are we seriously suggesting that 'poor air quality' should stop pro-sports players from training outside?

Wow!

I must assume that there are no pro sportsmen in Delhi, Shanghai, Seoul, Manila, Los Angeles and anywhere else that has higher readings 80% of the year!!!!

When did we become such princesses??????

It doesn't hurt to be cautious for a day (so no harm done) but having visited and worked in every one of the above cities .... and now living in Sydney ..... I can assure you that these 'poor to your health' warnings are a highly exaggerated CROCK!!!!!!

It's not *smile* ASBESTOS - it's air with smoky particulate!!!!

Every player that cycles home after training (or anywhere for that matter) and travels alongside traffic - or on the road - sucks up far more damage than 60mins on Punt Road. The irony of the latte sipping outrage/crisis is delicious :)

First I doubt the weather in those other cities mentioned is worse 80 percent of the time than our air quality ATM which is acknowledged as world's worst. Second Life expectancy in Delhi is 68 and Manila 71. I think ours is over 82.

And it's crazy to train valuable athletes outdoors with this air quality if you don't need to.

Horse racing was called off. I think there are very different opinions on this. Poor air quality can certainly have bad effects on people but everyone reacts differently. I think it's important to be very aware of the unique conditions of every individual. There is no doubt that elite athletes performing at their peak breath in significantly more air than the average person walking down the street. In the poor quality air, particularly as a result of fires, there are a lot of toxins and it makes sense that the more you breathe in, the more toxins you are going to digest. Over time, or even in a short period of time for some (as we've seen in the tennis) this can have very negative effects.

I don't think a blanket approach should be taken on this. The air quality in different areas even within Melbourne can be quite different. This is quite unprecedented. I see many, many locals in Manila walking around with masks on. Obviously they are concerned for their health. Just because the air is poor consistently in other cities doesn't mean we need to follow their lead. Again we shoudn't take a blanket approach but consider the area and individuals when making decisions.

Touch rugby with bog rolls soaked in petrol n lit makes for some seriously rapid ball handling.

I would reckon those pro sport players in the cities mentioned above are training well away from the polluted areas.

And, no, it isn't asbestos, but then again, I remember when they were denying that asbestos caused cancer.

I don't refute that we have this luxury..............

At least we can now understand where the colloquial term comes from:

"White people problems" ................. LOL!!!!

I wonder what the air reading is when I sit by a smoky campfire for 6 hours quenching a hard earned thirst and vainly muttering "white rabbit, white rabbit, white rabbit'

BUT - the latte sippers will say that just makes me a bogan!!!!

LOL!!!!!

Just my opinion based on how bad it was out my way. For the 1-2 days of really bad air quality (2nd only to Bangladesh today) train them in a way that minimises any potential harm. You can still flog the bejesus out of them in the gym, pool, boxing.
again only my opinion
