No good reason for the AFL to shorten quarters to 16 minutes now. None whatsoever.

if they are playing 1 game a week, then no.

but with no fixture, we dont know the frequency of games.

but with a late October GF suggested, and 16 rounds remaining,

and a 4 week finals series forecast, then we need 16 games of footy in about 14 weeks.

suggesting teams play every 6 days, week in week out.

suggesting we would need a lighter load?

I hardy noticed the short quarters in R1 and think it would favour our age profile and chaos ball.

A half of soccer is 45 minutes plus injury time.

A half of AFL under these new times will be 32 minutes.

To fit the games in I understand it for this season playing catch up.

However............. I'll throw this scenario out there.

Maybe long term they may try and implement changes in order to facilitate playing more games down the track, under the guise of having fair draw everyone plays each other twice.

Slashing playing time and shorter breaks minimum will help this transpire if this is the direction they are looking to go. It may also assist to have more games played per night and broadcasted.

More games equals more TV revenue and more sponsorship.. CHA CHIIING

They are charlatans..... For every action there is a reaction, I just don't trust them anymore.

The AFL X concept was more than just a face value gimmick they had some changes to the game beta tested there, and they'll be using this season to beta test more.

The Broadcasters and the corporate Financiers own the game now as they are stumping up the cash and will push for what they want rather than what the fans want but this is a high rope to walk..

The players and managers will go along for the near term as more TV money equals bigger and bigger contracts for them.

They could very well erode the fans interest in the game just as IPL and 20/20 have destroyed Cricket Internationally and domestically if they keep going down this path of continually tinkering and tailoring the the game, its identity, and rules, and its connection to the fans.

Many will disagree with me and tell me I'm just an over reacting angry bastard but I've seen it heading down this path for a while now and I don't see that course changing.

Without fans there is no game its as simple as that.

TV broadcasters eventually wont keep paying out big $$$ for a product no longer pulling in the advertising cash to make it worthy of big rights contracts.

No patrons and even more so no viewers or significant declines in viewership on TV fTA or Pay will eventually derail the gravy train.

Not sure of your argument.
Last year a half of AFL was 40 mins but we all know that each quarter still took around 30 mins from bounce to siren and with the break the entire half typically took close to 70 mins
A half of soccer typically takes less than 50 mins from kick off to end.

Resuming the footy from June 11 is going to change the balance of power with teams ...some teams are really going to benefit with the change of rules , the break and no crowds etc . Some with crash and burn ..For example I had written the Bombers off for this season with so many players coming back from surgery over the off season ..but with the break extended break this season most of those players are fit and ready to go. GWS should benefit with no crowds etc .. Think were going to see some interesting unexpected results this season .

If it's for this season only - and that it's based on catering for the possibility that games might still need to be played at more than one per 7 days - I'm OK with that.

FWIW - I'm not happy with 60 secs after a goal - and I'd prefer a shorter break at half-time.
A soccer match is usually finished in 2 hours - but ours have taken 2hrs 40 mins

Yeah a temporary arrangement is ok.

As a kid going to the G I loved three hours of footy, even that seemed too short sometimes.

Yeah - when you're beating a good side - you always want the last quarter to keep going and going

Just watching the Prelim against the Gee Whiz 2017, @#@#% me did that bald prick umpire find some free kicks against the Tigers that day.

They just love to stitch us the bastards.

NRL only one ref now so will the AFL follow suit with our umpires (two instead of three screwing up the game ). Whilst on umps heard that umps who are going to umpire the Adeladian games will self isolate for 14 days before the games. If married or in a partnership can they take there oppos as well ?.
