On the couch

Garthwaite's days are numbered if he couldn't get a kick as the spare.

Regardless of whatever hand-selected stills they choose to show, the problem was too many Swans in defensive 50. And if you're a Sydney supporter or Richmond-hater, it wasn't a problem.

Why not highlight what St.Kilda did to beat us? Backed themselves, took the game on, broke tackles. And they had a less experienced team than Sydney (70 games avg v 74).

Wow. Just wow. Half of us would do his footy analysis gig for free!
What a joke
Yep, incredibly inept for a paid commentator. But he must have meant Caddy who was sporting a new haircut. Admit I did a double-take a couple of times thinking why is Garth playing / who is out?

Sometimes I think the public need to remember - these ex-great players have suffered a lot of head knocks over their careers. I notice it with BT's calls; some of his errors in mis-calling players are quite odd.

And they kept raising scoring or lack of it. And record lows etc. the game is 20% shorter ffs. Ad 20% to the scores and then you might have something to work with. Infuriatingly shallow analysis.

As well as the Garthwaite error Brown highlighted Pickett leaving Mills and in Brown's word "went kick chasing".
Now Pickett did indeed run up the ground and did get the ball.
Next Brown said Pickett then had to kick wide because Mills was free and standing 25meters out in front of goals - which again was correct.
However Pickett was kicking to a free player. The error was in Pickett kicking the ball too long and out of bounds on the full. If he had of kicked it the right distance we mark it or a throw in is forced for a set play in our forward 50.
So a skill error more than positional error
And if Pickett did stay back on Mills the Swans may have taken the ball forward instead of it coming back in.
The main problem all game was the delivery into the forward 50

We’ve spent the last 3 years kicking chaos balls into the forward line. That ain’t the issue. Teams have worked us out. Flood the defence, nullify our small forward pressure by having extra numbers and then play keepings off. Given we play zone not man on man if they have the skills they can beat us easily. Hardwick hasn’t worked out what to do now Plan A don’t work anymore thats the problem.

We need a new game plan and a level of enthusiasm and fitness would help also

Tipping most teams will try to take us on while we're down on personnel. North certainly won't shy away from it. They'll back themselves to beat us physically around the ball.

Yesterday wasn't a normal game. If it becomes common, you can forget about gameplans because the sport is finished.

I hear Browny is suggesting Garthwaite be dropped this week. He put forward Greg Strachan and Darren Gaspar as replacements

100%
60% of our scoring over the last 3 years was running in waves to an open 50.
Not anymore. Totally agree.
Clubs are putting up road blocks and Hardwick hasn't figured out a way to combat that.
Plain and simple.

Plain and simple why don't we just do what the Swans did? Flood the oppo forward arc and play kick to kick. You can *smile* guarantee if we do it for a few games the afl will change the rules.

Fair point but you forgot to add, once you've built up a 3/4 goal lead first. Buckley's gameplan with his team of skunks for '20 flag.

And do it ten times better.

You guys DO provide 10x better analysis than footy media. It’s simply better.

The Footy media is the equivalent of a poster on a forum’s livelihood depending on getting “likes”. They wouldn’t be posting a detailed analysis. They’d need to produce shallow, disingenuous dribble. With trolling. And that’s what they do.

Whether the AFL media is a religion with millions of followers or a delusional cult depends on your perspective.

The best footy talk by far is on this forum ;)

Maybe we need to win centre clearances, like when Shai kicked a goal against Sydney.

It could also be the factor a lot have pointed to that we can't grind teams down in shorter quarters and therefore can't get an open forward 50.

Kicking to the top of the goal square clearly isn't working, can we create some space maybe 35-40m out? Hard when there are over 70,000 defenders in there (or just 12 in reality but same thing really).

Every team needs to create some space in their forward 50, how are other teams doing this when there is a flood?

We are just going to completely break Lynch and Jack with this top of the square stuff. It's like using a couple of Ferraris to deliver pizzas.

Serious question - is there any decent analysis available on TV? i.e. is there a show deep in the recesses somewhere that I'm missing? As well expressed above, all the popular shows have analysis that is so appalling, it cant legitimately be called analysis.

David King is a complete flog but goes somewhere near the territory I'm talking about - they just need a show with legitimate analysts talking footy - probably what On the Couch was supposed to be. I do like Nick Reiwoldt and I used to like Paul Roos in this setting. Browny is there for fun and Lyon is the oldest of old school dinosaurs.

Actually the video series I don't mind is 'The Coach', on AFL.com - at least Ross has some credibility and doesn't talk dribble in this environment.

:rotfl1 Jonathan Brown is analysing who was in the wrong re the Tigers V Swans game. He mentioned Garthwaite twice, on ya Browny, Garthwaite hasn't played a game this season:rotfl2

Edit

Here's Browny displaying his outstanding analytical footy brain last night, he's telling everyone what role we were using Garthwaite in on Sunday :rotfl1
You've done yourself proud Browny.

Scroll down to the video.

Ive mentioned it in the past, honestly gave up on the BS media/radio (since the GF last yr). Feels like those above have pushed for a tabloid style news/opinion to get reactions. Full of crap and nonsense about footy.

fwiw late last night flicked channels, caught the rerun of 360 by accident.
Well, I fell asleep in under 15 mins of watching it. Served its purpose :)
