Draft prospects 2020

Callow has incredible hands. Athleticism the worry.
Those of us with long memories might recall similar things spoken about JR8 in his Tas VFL games.
Back our development guys to do the job. ;)

Jack could always jump. That's athleticism. And he's quite nimble at ground level. He might not be quick, but he's agile.

Surely Nik Cox goes well before our pick, otherwise we'd have to be all over him, wouldn't we? I could see him going top-10. With three picks Essendon would have to give him strong consideration.

Skulls I am not sure I want Callow personally but to back you up on your reasoning in the case for, here are some quotes at the time from recruiting managers on JR8

Prior to the draft, AFL Media's Matt Burgen labelled him a "goal-kicking forward who is extremely strong overhead." He was however considered both short and slow for his position, with North Melbourne recruiting manager Neville Stibbard later remarking that he did not believe Riewoldt was "athletic or tall enough to play key position at either end (of the field)." Richmond recruiting manager later recalled Riewoldt's impressive football smarts and his ability to read the flight of the ball as key factors in his recruitment.

Every word of this applies to Zac Reid as well.

Is there a concern on Cox's ermm contest work or competitiveness?
sorry to say with a snigger does he lack hardness?
Tall and ultra athletic with neat skills does he find it easier to be a flanker and outside player?
At his height there is no mention of ruck.
Its the exact opposite we need in a tall.

In short is it an updated version ala McCox?

#Happy to be set straight by anyone who has facts and not my guesswork.

I'm guessing most of us would be fairly pleased with our recruiting blokes opinion of Jaaack n Stibbard can go pick boogers.

Stibbard took Lachy Hansen, that didn’t age well.

I recall another Taswegian who was " slow, not very athletic, not a good overhead mark etc etc." who finished up being one of the greatest fullforwards the game has seen.
His name: Peter Hudson
Hi reading of the game & how a passage of play would unfold was unbelievable.

I was watching some footage of Jack Riewoldt back in the day. In Tassie IIRC.

He roved a boundary throw in. Traffic. He headed goalwards to a clear target in space. Two opponents, one each side of him, began to close the gate. Young Riewoldt grubbed it under their smother attempts directly to the target in space. All in a split second.

At 17yo JR's IQ was off the scale. Furthermore JR has a gifted ground game. This is gold in a tall. His aerial game belies his height.

On his clear and eternal lack of pace, he uses rat cunning in lieu. That IQ again.

I've never seen a player like him.

FWIW I like him better than all Richmond tall forwards I have seen except Hart. Genius. Champion. Historic player.

I have Reid ahead of Cox. Takes pack marks, plays tall with a massive leap.
Reid is 3.17 for 20m, Scoop. Is he a tall forward?

Cox is a small, 2.95 and nimble. Turns on a dime. Probably a HBF maturing to CHB. In terms of profile.

In terms of profile, I prefer the modern Putt to the modern Cleveland Steamer. :D

I love Jack and also Loved Royce but Richo was my all time favorite of all big Fowards. If he played for Richmond from 2010-2026
who knows what he might have become .

Richo will always hold a special place in my heart for making the years bearable

Richo kept the doors open, t-d-t, when we were cattletrucked.

An icon.

Jack is rational.

My point is about Jackson Callow. He's from Tasmania. But otherwise unlike Jack Riewoldt He may be like Tom McCartin. Or Darling. Or. Halfway in between.

For mine, I'd be betting around both McCartin and Darling. Lays IMO. At first I'd pot Callow on profile.

I was thinking Darcy Fogarty. But yep, McCartin even closer.

Short answer: Dunno.

Long answer: Dunno, haven't seen enough, especially with no footy this year.

Philosophical question
Does a key forward need burst speed in the modern age?
Most of the game they are outnumbered and blocked to the nth degree.
Getting separation in the crowd relies on smarts and footy guile.
So can we have a slow full forward who works all day, hits packs hard and clunks big grabs?
If he's got no ground game, no agility, the turning circle of Jurica, nup.

Hudson also got more one-out opportunities in a single game than Callow would get in a season at AFL level.

Stibbard took Lachy Hansen, that didn’t age well.
Yeah, but he made up for it by taking Gavin Urqhart at 21. We could only manage Shedda at 26.

These are players with poor athleticism, spook. That's no advantage.

JP Kennedy is of similar size and athleticism but in no way resembles the above as a footballer. Because he's a small. And that is good. Maybe Josh Battle is a small. If so he may be good.

By extension if Jackson Callow is good he must be small.
