Talking Politics

OK, but the issue in Aus is that the Australian Gov proposed legislation proposes no cap or upper limit on the payments. This is completely in Murdoch's favour. News Limited is using our government as bargaining leverage for his US Based company, The same company that gives us Fox and Sky after Dark.

Both sides might be evil, but only one of them has bought our Government and has them doing their bidding for them.

This is the salient point. It favours big news publishers only, its protectionist giving Murdoch and Fairfax money they are not owed (to paraphrase one commentator).

big news publishers that the govt are in bed with in such a big way its unfathomable they're getting away with it ..
i find it terrifying ...

what's even more terrifying is Morrison now gets on Facebook and calls them "arrogant" and that they 'unfriended' Australia !!
they basically did what the gaslighter asked ...

Both sides of Government support this. I’m one for having more jobs and being paid fairly and taxed fairly. I support the media on this one rather than Facebook and Google who rip the taxpayer and our local media off.

How about forcing them to pay taxes instead of giving money to MSM proprietors they don't deserve.

While i am not keen to defend FB, it is interesting hear everyone complain that a private company has stopped allowing government departments to use their service for free.

this spat with FB and Google has come at fortuitous time for the gov, as evidence mounts that Morrison has been far from honest and decent (again) in response to the rape allegation at parliament house.

Cry me a river Facebook. Find it a little hard to garner any empathy for a trillion dollar organisation who's only concern is to sublimally control the lives of the global population through addiction to social media and data mining. Social media is a scourge on society and anything that pisses off Facebook is a great thing IMHO. Anyone watch The Social Dilemma?

Google isn't much better but at least it has come to the table and done a deal in what appears to be reasonable faith. The major media organisations are far from altruistic but is it not a fair thing for organisations that generate the media for public consumption to be paid for the work in some shape or form?

I will admit some naievty here as I don't use Facebook or any other form of social media except for this site. But Facebook appears to have acted in a very heavy handed manner. Sure remove the news feeds if you don't want to pay; no problem. But to remove references to charities and health services seems to be well beyond the pale.

That said, if people want to get news can't they just go the original source if they can't get Facebook feeds? Want to read something on the ABC or The Age website? Go to the website. Open a new page on your browser. How hard is that? The chief of this area on the ABC basically said that on the radio yesterday; she didn't seem overly concerned.

People bemoan the influence of Murdoch and that has some merit but to defend gazillion dollar Facebook in this instance is ludicrous. Both major parties are backing this legislation. Facebook can get *smile*. Just get your news direct from the source. If you don't like the source, don't read it.

again, i dont really want to defend FB, but I dont hear them complaining (much), they are just a private company responding to proposed government legislation.
while the government is busy cutting funding to the ABC, they might want to reflect how easy it has been for a private company to effect the communications of essential services.

and happy to be corrected, but when someone posts a link to a newsite on FB doesnt the reader then need to click on that newsite to access the article? isnt that a good thing for the newsites?

I can't speak to the mechanics of how it works Brodders as I'm not on Facebook. But what I see is Facebook absolutely shitting themselves because if they lose this battle it could well have greater implications for them on a global scale; there are much bigger markets than Australia out there.

The whole essence of how they effect communications is the point IMHO. It's not only Australia where this is an issue; it's all over the world. If Facebook disappears off the map in Australia I won't be shedding any tears. In any case something else will fill the void. The same issues may arise again; or it may be a chance to reset and come up with a better, less intrusive form of communication.

I agree with your points on the ABC; it needs better government funding. Overall I find it the most balanced news service in the country.

Yes it is getting murky. On face value the situation appears to have been handled very poorly. Due process must take its course but if Morrison is found to have been untruthful then that will be abhorrent behaviour and I can't see how he could survive.

He can survive because his mates in the media, the same ones he's fighting Facebook for, will protect him.

Look for the rape story on the Murdoch sites. How far do you have to dig?

FB are definitely aware of the global implications of being forced to pay big news companies (there are suggestions the laws wont apply to independent news outlets?) when people link articles on their pages, but that doesnt make it a just law.
again, i cannot see how media outlets lose out at present when people post links on FB?

and i admit that I am biased against this government, which has taken vote buying, looking after mates, corruption, unethical behaviour, ineptitude and dodgy deals to levels we havent seen before, at a federal level at least.

Morrison is now threatening Labor that they have skeletons in the closet too, possibly true, but as always he is trying to deflect, denigrate and deny.
i am beginning to think the only real difference between Morrison and Dutton is literally the marketing- Morrison smiles while refusing to answer questions, while lying, while deflecting, while bullying. Dutton just looks sullen.

Google and facebook are the ones providing a service to the media organisations, directing people to their actual websites so why should they pay the media organisations? Facebook and google do not host the stories they provide links.

They don't, their loss of revenue is nothing to do with google or facebook. Its because the media organisations never reacted properly to the rise of the internet.

I think google is a little different in that they sometimes "host" the info, but that may not be correct.

I laughed at that. Morrison implying he knows what goes on in the ALP offices just after he claims he doesn't know what's happening in the Lib offices.

We are reaching US level blatant lying with no ramifications for the government.

Whatever happened to the 4th estate keeping the government honest I wonder.

What I think people are missing here is that the government are trying to force Facebook to pay News Limited if a Facebook users posts a News Limited article on their Facebook page.

This is much more than FB and Google paying for content they republish as news, most of which they credit, link to and pay for.

Seriously, FB and Google the bogeymen narrative is being driven by the MSM and government. Do you wonder why?

If the allegations are true and it is proven that he knew about this incident before he said he did, then no amount of diversion from his media mates will save him. There are still plenty of independent media organisations that will bring it to light.
