New Rules

Yeah, some good analysis of the rules and Thursday night and what we’ve seen the last few weeks including the other games on the weekend.

Not sure if the game being played with that much space and that much speed - if it stays that way - is all that good for us. Don’t think it will stay like that, think it will moderate somewhat, plus we’ll adjust, but at present it dilutes our set up and structures a bit, plus I don’t know if we’re necessarily the most accurate team by foot which plays to that quick, open space, hit-target directly type of game.

Would feel more comfortable seeing it slow down just a touch. Not a lot coz it also plays to a few of our strengths, but just a tad.

I think when you have 70+ inside 50s, it's safe to say our direct, long kicking midfield like the new rules. Just a matter of getting it to the right spots for the forwards to capitalise. Much ado about nothing from our perspective (admittedly from a very small sample size).

The teams that will battle will be the likes of Geelong and Collingwood. No footspeed and don't move the ball quickly. The death by a thousand cuts Geelong gamestyle ain't going to cut it based on round 1.

Jack talking about the new rules creating “unstructured defense.” That’s what I’m a bit concerned about. Our defensive set up and structure is critical to us, not just for defending but setting up for forward attacks.

We’ve had the best defense in the game for a number of years now, hope we can maintain it under these new changes. Signs last week v Carlcheat were that it’s gonna be harder.

Lots of talk today that the new open game style doesn't suit Cripps, less stoppages and limited kicking ability.

I wonder if this will similarly adversely impact Cotchin's game.

@LeeToRainesToRoach are you running your weekly "round scoring" against previous years again?
Would be interested to see the impact of the new rules given 2019 gave us the lowest scoring season since the 60's.

I think this needs to be tempered a little given we had both Vlas and, it seemed, Grimes injured for most of the match.

Don’t worry about the new rules. Just try getting the ones that have been around for 100 years right.

Totally- it’s beyond stupid. Anyone would think we all hate the game and refuse to watch it the way it is constantly altered. Chucking and ducking makes me sick.

the new freeze rule is super *smile*.

The shittest rule I've ever seen I reckon.

I dont think the new rule will disadvantage the Tigers at all,

I just think its absolutely *smile* for enjoying football.

I watched a QAFL game the other day, and the look on the face of the player frozen on the mark,

says it all.

they just sit there resigned, swearing to themselves. Its a defeated, powerless, barely suppressed inner rage.

It reminds me of the look when a blokes wife says they are invited to her mums for dinner on a Friday night during footy season.

Hold your fire - nothing wrong with trialling it and if that’s the feedback it can be ditched
And it will be ditched.
A rule that shouldn't even have been considered never mind implemented anywhere. Goes against everything Aussie rules footy has been about in the hundred n fifty years it's been played.

Absolutely, anyone who suggests this should be delisted and traded to FIFA.

except, as Hardwick complains about, our reserves are playing by different rules than ours ones. What happens when RCD gets promotes, and suddenly has to deal with twice as many players around a ball up or thrown in, in addition to the quicker game.

after 2 rounds, and admittedly really only watched the tigers games, i still hate it. since when have footballers been forced to stay out of the play? it is a fundamental shift to the way the game is played, albeit a small one.

I heard what Dimma said in the presser after our game on Sunday but can someone confirm this for me?

We have the VFL playing under rules that are different to the AFL. (Basically netball.) But we have other major development leagues (WA/SA/NSW/QLD) playing under the SAME rules as the AFL.

So a major advantage to sides in those states who can have AFL-like conditions for their depth players, whereas the VIC clubs cannot.

Thanks.
