GAME DAY - TIGES V SWANS

A few things to consider:

- Basic skill execution was shithouse. Anyone would think it was Round 3 with a month less preparation than the oppo.

- Midfield heat was missing. Can’t be running white hot pressure acts every week. The Swans are up and about and the result was probably exaggerated in many ways.

- Tactically we probably went in with too many heavy bodies in the centre bounces. Shed and Bolton needed to go in there earlier. The Swans’ spread from clearances was far better than ours. I think an injection of Ross and one of the other young mids will work wonders.

- Was the system exposed? No, because the system is founded upon defensive effort and that is something we control.

- Do the new rules put us at a disadvantage? No, I don’t believe so because when we are working hard there is always cover on turnover. The only thing that changes is the velocity of oppo entries. I think Grimes, Balta and Vlastuin (when he returns) can still get to the critical contest. Well organised defences will be super important this season and we have the best.

All things considered, there is very little reason to worry. FWIW i think Port will beat us next week and we’ll still be fine.

The one thing I would like to see is the blooding of two more mid rotations.

when a genius jockey finishes 4th on a favourite, he looks uncertain and his reflexes and courage desert him.

Richmond lose drastically.

its our way.

there is no way we are slow.

Dimma said it perfectly IMO .....

'sometimes you strike a side playing so well, they make you look dreadful, and theres nothing you can do' (paraphrased)
Yes agree, can be made to look slow when copping a flogging.

Yer, not much of a game but the opposition really exposed a lot of defects today. I think posters can ease up blaming it all on Egg, FWIW, and not that disposals alone indicate a poor effort, but Aarts, Bolton, Jack and Rioli all on 11 or less.

He wasn't the sole reason we got belted. Swans were too good for the team ... with some special assistants in green. The 10 extra FKs to them is equal to such a player.
No, don't blame losses in an individual just as I don't say every player contributes to a win (though many do) have to isolate evety player and make an assessment. And Egg was not good. Maybe he doesn't have to be dropped, gets a second chance but he has very few credits to draw on.

Eggs plus Caddy and Aarts weren't best 22 on GF day last year and so far this year they have endorsed that.

Dimma was onto the uncontested trend from the first preseason game, so they’re aware and onto it.

They’ve fully earned our faith to adapt.

We haven’t seen other teams avoid our pressure like this before, so I think it’s fair to say they could take a bit more time to get it right this year.

But everyone else is going for all-out attack... so if they can figure it out, then Richmond will be the only defensively solid team come finals - and you know what that means!

I had a good look at sydneys numbers pre-game and decided 2 things

1. They are playing richmond football and

2. They were in with a big chance (this can be verified on afl betting thread)

I think we will be playing a different brand in july, while a few challengers are perfecting the old richmond football.

But kudos to swans. They beat us on the G with our brand with a bunch of kids.

Ill be surprised if they dont play finals and ill be equally surprised if they are a genuine challenger.
Nah, the ducklings didn't play richmond football. We were weak and lazy and let the do as they pleased. Most teams would have beaten us today. We were outnumbered at most contests and our intensity and energy was very low.

Interesting, ToO, I'm curious to figure out how these ratings are tabulated e.g. Shai rated well in arrears and 'worst on' by far!?

Caddy actually had 22 Ds and 397 m.g (I was critical of his game too, but not that bad on face value).

EGG with only 9Ds but went at 90% DE. Jack R 10Ds @ 30%, Shai 7Ds @ 43 %DE.

Caddy had 22 (but only 2 contested) at 59% disposal efficiency. A lot of those uncontested ones he seemed to be on his own. His kicking has gone downhill like a rate of knots since 2017.

Swans kicked 4 goals in the last 3 minutes of second quarter. That never happens to this Richmond team.

Our players were lazy and undisciplined today. Dare I say comfortable. There was no eye of the tiger on display from our boys today. Will be interesting to see how long it takes them to regain the hunger.

What annoys me is that he over-rates his kicking and makes poor choices or takes too long to make up his mind. Like that shot on goal today. If you decide to shoot, really commit to the kick. Kick it right through not just to the goal-line. If not, pass it to someone.

But I was more commenting on Egg. A poor game but at least his DE% was 90, far better than JR. Who I thought had a very poor one. Also burnt Castagna running past into an open goal for that last set-shot where he hit the post I think.

Watching the game again this time on Tv, we absolutly got reamed by the pricks.
The mark not paid to nakas was a disgrace. Goal to Sydney.
The high hit to McIntosh, the umpire paid below the knees. Goal to Sydney.
And 3 blocking free kicks, all goals to Sydney.
I can understand the free kicks but we never get them.
Someone mentioned umpire 7 bent us over, but the prick who was constantly bouncing the ball outside the circle and only calling it back when we had it was the most disgraceful umpiring ive seen.
In the 2nd qtr twice he called it back, once when Nakas got it and another time when Dusty had it, but when Kennedy got it outside the circle he called play on.
From the outside it looks like not are we playing against the oppostion but the 3 clowns.

2 from free kicks the same ones we NEVER EVER get.
The block that was *smile*.
He run straight into Balta.
That goal on the siren destroyed any chance of us winning.

Sorry but they chipped it around all day. Not sure how you can say they didn't, sometimes they went wide, sometimes they went through the middle, but they used the short kick repeatedly.

Whilst we were *smile* and probably would have lost regardless, I hated the style of footy. Its basically AFLX without the name., uncontested mark after uncontested mark. The contest is dead in footy if this is the blueprint for the future. The game I fell in love with when I moved here from the UK is not the footy that was played today. 117 uncontested marks show how easily they controlled the ball with those short kicks.

We were rubbish though, beaten in the midfield (I'll come back to centre clearances later) and our workrate was far far below what it should have been. It was why they always seemed to have free men, its was so clear at the ground how their workrate was above ours today.

I turned to my daughter at quarter time, and said how much of a lack of fluency we had going forward and the last 3 quarters didn't change that.

Lynch - PLAY IN FRONT, STOP TRYING TO PUSH DEFENDERS OUT OF THE CONTEST. FFS its not that hard. Sydney controlled the ball so well and by giving away frees like he did it was another impact on our lack of fluency. It was like Lynch was playing against a giant, not a guy he had at least 6cms on.

Aarts - Previously said he was too slow, stick by it. He's a trier but we need to move on

Caddy - Game has passed him by. Too slow and he killed our momentum going forward

Egg - Not sure why we put him back on the list, those same issues are still there ant not going away. Takes that extra bit too long before disposing inviting the pressure that then rushes the disposal. Poor defensively too. Just not a lot to like if we are going for the flag again.

I was surprised how many people bagged our Rioli today, thought he was ok.

On the umpires and this is a MASSIVE bug bear of mine, bouncing the ball in the centre. I would guess that out of 28 centre bounces at least 20 of them should have been recalled. We seemed to do well with the centre bounces when the bounce was good, but every time it was a poor bounce (more often than not) it seemed to fall to the advantage of the swans. If you can't bounce it, it should just be thrown up.

Some of the umpiring was flabbergasting. Kmac gets knocked out and despite the fact he was low trying to play the ball (and didn't seem to slide, was paid below the knees despite the fact he took a hip to the head (they kicked a goal from this when it went forward by the way).

Just to be clear we didn't lose due to the umpiring but I defo felt that the centre bounce dominance that Sydney seemed to get seemed to be from poor bounces which favoured them.

Rant over
You make some really good points here. Our kicks into forward 50 have been woeful all year. Just got shown up more today!
The Centre Bounce annoyed the hell out of me too - I think Nank is a bit slow to get to the bad bounces as well. Our pressure in there was poor all day - if we didn't get it straight away - they waltzed out of there! -
Everyone seems to have forgotten the clear mark not paid to Nank that they kicked a goal from as well - agree umpiring was poor but didnt cost us the game
Was puzzled as to why Shai didnt go in there once Prestia was out of the game - thought he had a rare shocker actually.

Lynch has annoyed me all season - gives away cheap frees and just doesnt get to enough contests or bring the ball to ground - I think we would be better with him at CHF and Jack deeper - Jack has far more forward craft and brings the smalls into the game!

Agree on Caddy - too slow - and Egg - I can't see how a guy that was 42nd on our list got a game in front of all those youngsters.

Not sure on Aarts - definitely a victim of the ball not coming to ground enough!

I thought the other aspect of our play that was shown up was our indiscriminate forward handball - they had guys there all day to mop it up! We need to be more precise.

Overall though, I think we have to temper criticism - we had a bad day. We have a game built on contest and pressure and when we don't bring it we look 2nd rate - but like the Hawthorn game last season!

Other teams have worked us out.Looked disinterested and lazy with woeful foot skills.Time to get some new faces in.

Some games I think we can just over analyse, yesterday we simply got out played , most of our guys had bellow average games , it happens , rub of the green , bounce of the ball , was just one of those days imho

Jesus that was rough!

Garry Lyon is quickly becoming my most hated commentator. Just says the first thing that comes into his head and then drops a geriatric cliché. Gave Lynch a spray for not being active enough when Jack marked and goaled in the third (?). In that passage of play Lynch had contested at half back to get the ball into our hands. You can see him running past Jack as he is preparing and is then on the goal line just in case it drops short. It's very hard to see work-rate on the telly, but I don't think Lynch is lazy for a bloke his size. He does get caught playing from behind more than I would like. Need him running and jumping at the ball to create contests. But of course that depends on the way the ball is coming in too. But it is stupid to the point of ridiculous to expect Lynch to have the mobility, versatility of Jack.

In general the Swans were just better/harder at the footy on the deck and used the new rule to great effect with short-kicking in the back half as an effective out-number. That was helped by their rucks getting off he chain when running forward. I didnt see anyone switch in to ruck at the centre bounce all day. Maybe giving Balta a couple and letting him stay on the ball might have given Sydney something to think about and brought Balta into the game? He was quiet by recent standards. In fact intercept marking was much lower in general. But the that is Vlas' bread-and-butter. He is sorely missed.

Pickett's turn of speed is off the charts. He is just super efficient in his motion. He is a parkour footballer. Now we need to find a way to exploit that. He is holding his spot on merit but it would be great if we could figure out a way to bring him into the play in an Edwards kind-of-way. Sheds can thread the needle and turn defence into attack at such speed it leaves opposition stunned, Pickett could do that with his pace and litheness.

Bakes was getting a few bakes but he was up against it all day. They kept dropping talls into the 50 and getting him out-manned. I thought he worked hard all day and halved some contests that no other sub-six-footer would have got near.

Shorty had one to forget. So did Shai. So did Jack Graham.
