GAME DAY THREAD - TIGES V POWER

How do we reconcile the deliberate rushed behind non-decision with the deliberate out of bounds given against one of our players being tackled and trying to handpass over his shoulder while being slung?
Balta handpassed the ball because he was caught and being slung. It could've gone anywhere. To suggest he was looking for the boundary was a very harsh interpretation.

Deboy will get a gig again because the umpiring stocks are desperately low. Just hope they keep him the *smile* away from our games. We should be getting the best umpires as a) premiers and b) showcase time slot.

Still can't get over tht houli holding the ball from his mark.
They never pay it when they call play on, touched, and the players marks and holds it thinking he did tkae a genuine mark.

yep they NEVER pay it.

The holding on Lynch and Martin in the last quarter that were not paid nearly caused my head to explode!

Dimma's joking with the journos on some dumpiring decisions and you can see he wants to break out but pauses....too obvious we just can't win.
He shouldbe unleash, especially our forwards get reamed

Yep I can't recall it being paid. The sensible thing would be to blow the whistle and call for a bounce, but he was looking to penalise Houli and let it go. Blatantly playing to the home town ferals.

Balta knew what was unfolding and was third man in, to no avail.

Well that was quite a game.

The pressure was good, but I expected that with us playing Port, one issue will be playing the teams that do keepings off better than us and Port. We saw that last week - if they take away our opportunity to apply pressure we have to find another way.

Centre clearances are a huge issue. I saw Nank get a couple of clean ruck taps which went nowhere near our players. But I also notice how opposition players run through the congestion to collect the ball and we don't tend to do that. No idea why we don't as tackling a player with momentum is difficult. We need to seriously address the clearances, we're getting smashed and you don't win getting smashed in the middle. We miss Prestia but the problem is deeper than just missing Prestia.

Contested possessions is also an issue, we need to get better at this.

Tackilng is a bit off but I also think we are reaching the point where our players are hesitant to tackle as we tackle and the opposition get free kicks for no apparent reason.

Lynch is not playing as well as he can but I look and see he is often behind. Is he being held back? I suspect so. If this is the case he needs to learn to move in different patterns as the umpires are not going to help him, they just refuse to see holding infringements on Lynch, must be a policy.

The 2 debutants just got thrown in a fire. Playing Port on debut is a big ask. Was it Martyn who got caught a couple of times? Yeah, AFL is faster, especially faster than VFL practice matches. Also remember no VFL last year so this is a hell of a step up. I'd give them a pass because first game and a lot to learn. Maybe more time in the VFL, but must be given more opportunities as they clearly need the experience. Would be nice to see if RCD can offer more at this stage.

Too many turnovers when there shouldn't have been turnovers too. Just a bit sloppy tonight. Big contrast to last week where there would have been a lot less pressure (not so many sloppy turnovers last week because we simply didn't have the ball), very different way the game was played tonight.

That said, we can be a lot better than this and still only lost by less than a goal.

Finally, the umpires. They were cheats, simple. The adjudications clearly favoured Port. I don't buy the argument that it is some sort of home ground bias, we get reamed at the MCG too. Given the umpiring this year has been so bad, Sydney last night and last week, the missed free to Brisbane against Geelong, etc, I think there does need to be some sort of reckoning. This is getting beyond a joke, they are destroying the game and making it very hard to watch. Even watching games not involving Richmond you can see clear bias towards one team.

I have a simple question about the umpiring: if you asked the average football supporter if they thought there was a chance that the AFL were trying to influence results with umpiring, would most supporters think this is a fanciful idea or that it is a distinct possibility? Now I don't think this is what is going on, but the very fact that I reckon most footy fans would not dismiss this out of hand is revealing. The AFL are not trusted by the fans and the standard of umpiring is truly atrocious.

The AFL Commission need to grow a spine or simply f*** off because they are not looking after the game and the fans are getting sick of the bulls*** - atrocious inconsistent umpiring, bad umpiring should mean the umpire is dropped, ridiculous rule changes every year, no-one is allowed to question the umpiring, the media are a bunch of sycophants - there are many things wrong with the way the AFL is running Australian Football and it is time the administration were called out.

Yeh he waited and waited. As you say they normally blow the whistle immediately and ball
It up but he had another plan.

Shai really sparked us tonight. Great game.

Link and run improved, but our forward 50 entries are just so bad.

Lynch and jack making contests, but not enough from Aarts and George tonight

Too much handball and kicking around the corner. We lacked some composure which was a little unusual. Was a great hitout and showed we are right in it.

Good question. Umps so inconsistent with incorrect disposal. Reckon I counted atleast 10 tackles were PA players did not dispose of the ball correctly. And then Houli gets paid holding the ball when he marked it. Umps never ever pay holding the ball when ball was touched and player marks and didn't know.
I'm too cynical and fed up to ever call it due to 'inconsistency"; not for a long time. You don't have a virtual -10 differential in umpiring decisions nearly every game for years due to 'inconsistency".
You are dead correct about the Houli one; every other time I have seen the Umps give the player the benefit of the doubt. Very hard for a player to hear the 'touched' call with a huge, braying crowd. Then barreled by opponent and ball locked in anyway. Split second, absurd penalty.

There were heaps of disgusting decisions, but the other one that especially angered me was the Q1 penalty on a player making his AFL debut. Mansell tried to get the ball out a few times; opponent obviously holding the ball in. Again, barely a second or two. Welcome to the game for a RFC player, kid, where you can guarantee Poort's debutant will never be penalised for the same thing.

The major cheat that is used against us when the ball is knocked out in the tackle, against us it's HTB/ID. But for our oppo it's play on - " ... knocked out in the tackle" !!

The AFL loves money too much, especially after COVID, so Richmond is more of a money spinner for them than Poort.

The simplest explanation is incompetence. The next most simple, some bookie influence. But now we're getting into the realms of paranoia.

Can you afford to blow $5K, Zips? Remember AFL have got him on a suspended fine which I bet they'd invoke for the slightest perceived transgression. He has to be so guarded.

Umpiring aside we let ourselves down with some simple turnovers costing us goals at both ends. We had them on the ropes in the third quarter but let them back in with cheap goals.

Agree with almost everything you've said. I'm almost over following this game any more. You have explained the major reason why re the Umpiring.
