GAME DAY !!!! Premiers v Pensioners

I think this game was a good example of Lee's age/experience hypothesis, this was always going to be a hard one for us given those stats. Without Cotch, Prestia and Lambo we got done for clearance and run. Add in the revenge factor, no grimes and vlas very underdone, Mansell's head knock and Geelong's kicking for goal efficiency and it was a perfect storm.

No panic from me yet and I was sitting behind the cheer squad seeing Hawkins, Rohan and Cameron nailing goals from everywhere.

Hawkins played a great game. 20 disposals, 7 marks 4 goals, 2 goal assists. The Cameron/Hawkins combination is devastating if allowed to bring it in quickly which Geelong were able to do all night. Their tall combination 42 disposals, 15 marks, 10 goals, 4 goal assists, 31 score assists, 17 contested possies. Ours, 11 disposals, 3 marks, 2 goals, 1 goal assist, 7 score involvements, 5 contested possies. Ouch.
They were very good, credit where it is due.
However I will say that we fielded a partially functional backline.
Vlaustin coming back from injury and the absence of Grimes was significant. Broad also had an off night.
If they play and are fit, there is no way Geelong's three tall forwards would have put on a clinic like that.

My main concern at the moment is the constant fumbling and poorly functioning forward line.
We fix that and we can start getting excited.

I can't agree. We've been opened up a lot this year by fast movement. Not just the games we've lost either. Grimes is nearly 30yo. His best is behind him. Yes we would have been better with him in the side but the way the ball was coming no backline could have put a dent in that onslaught. Cameron and Hawkins are elite and they're going to make the most of it. It was a total shellacking. In our forward line we totally underperformed. It's concerning. GWS next who have won 4 of their last 5. This game will give us an indication of where we're at. Having played the current top 5 and only beaten 1 we're certainly not top 4 material. Are we top 8?

Don’t underestimate the loss of Grimes. Would have played on Rohan and Broad left to be the spare.

The same type pf game as last week. Good in one of two halves but this time we were on the receiving end. I didn't like it but we were taken apart in the second half

2 weeks in a row we have had a player hit in the head.
Without any issue from the Tribunal or the AFL.

After watching the replay again, how bad are Taylor & Brayshaw? Uneducated & unlistenable.
More Daisy Pearce (who actually understands the game) & less of these muppets thanks!

I dont think the size of the loss is important , when two top sides go toe to toe its often either a nail biter or a blow out

and absolutely nothing wrong with our first half , the heat was on and we were on top for good passages of the first half

I think the loss does show we missed our 3rd qtr specialist
in the 2019 prelim Cotch lead the revival with a splendid tackle at the first bounce and kept coming with good work
2020 GF again Cotch a big 3rd qtr
last week V Bulldogs in a tight contest , Cotch 4 clearances in the 3rd qtr 9 disposals stood tall

we have also sorely missed Prestia , Grimmes & Lambert

Mansell , Ross & RCD all made crucial mistakes often leading to goals
but they also did good stuff in what was a finals like stage
we need games into these guys and what we saw on Friday can be the cost

and for a full on premiership tilt we need at least one if not two of them to be finals ready
all three would be a bonus , we know sooner or later we will lose senior players in the back half of the season
and we need their replacements to be ready

we dropped quite a number of uncontested marks and weren't clean with our hands at different times and that has been happening all year
we know those players are better than that and I hope we will settle into the groove we know they can play at

When Pickett went into centre bounces Geelong seemed to be very ready for him , with Grigg at Geelong , who better to say "well when the opposition regular ruck does this ... I cant compete with that , could that mean if CCJ can strike form in the VFL then the second ruck is an option ?

How we manage our list and develop players is under our control
What concerned me about Friday night was Geelong might have learnt how to play
Play chip chip slow slow slow will get us into finals and the odd grand final
but mix that up with some fast play and we can be near unbeatable

back in 2007 when they had that monster win against us , they , by their own admission , they studied that game to death and came up with a new game plan
my fear is they will study this game in detail and find out what things they changed in the second half that made them play at the next level

its tough at the top

Couldn’t agree more , Daisy stays composed and no over the top crap either .

Coming back from Local footy yesterday I had MMM on and for the 10 minutes it was just dribble giving you no idea where the footy was and then it would be whooooooa goal , all I can say is people must like the “entertaining “ style of commentary.

I'd like us to play Marbs or CCJ, Marbs possibly better due to speed, as a third tall in the forward line that can run and tackle. Also give Nank a good chop out. This year we are killing teams in the centre bounce. In the second we had four shots on goal from the centre and missed em all. We had had of kicked those, and it would have been goodnight Irene.

Yep. I heard him on radio after the Friday night Dudbourne game and he was totally unlistenable. Just dribbling inane, unfunny, unrelated rubbish. Total dhead.

He was trying to read out some phone number, had 4 goes at it, and ended up giving up. His brain is utter mush and everything that comes out of his mouth the same.

Terrible. Had to switch stations quickly.

She's great. Her insight at Q time about what the Cats needed to do was absolutely on the money. Good footy brain & very refreshing among the blokes.

daisy is the best in the business IMO.

understands footy and communicates her insights without the *smile*.

How many times must this be said, are the coaches addressing our forward line issues.

First, on the Cats, they kicked many of their goals from lead up passes. It was doing my head in seeing cats players marking easy hit up passes then putting it straight through the big sticks. Rohan, Cameron, Hawkins, Esava were all marking the ball out in front.

Then look at our forward line, just bombing with no thought process and hoping that lynch or jack would take a big mark, well they didn't and it just then gets rebounded out of our D50, which the cats kicked 8 goals from D50 that's unheard of, their ave is 3 per game.

Against the dogs, I did notice our forwards leading up to the ball especially lynch but that's far and few between, it rarely never happens.
Lynch notoriously always plays from behind, he is a man big man leading up to the ball I dare say not many would be able to stop him and if they attempt as backmen do he is more than likely to receive a free for a chop of the arm.

Our forward 50 entries are deplorable trying to manufacture goals out of anywhere. We always hear we had 50 or 60 Forward 50 entries for little output that's because the long bomb is a 50/50 contest and more times than not the opposition backs are clearing it out.

Our forwards need to lead into space for the easy hit up the pass.
Cats, Dees, Dogs, Port, Eagles and Swans more times than not look for the lead-up pass.

Dimma, Clarke and the mid coaches need to address this asap. Teams are working us out, the long bomb must stop. Yes, there will be times when the quick kick needs to go in but geez the teams above us are entering the fwd 50 with ease hitting up their forwards.

Coaching structure
  • Damien Hardwick. Senior coach.
  • Andrew McQualter. Assistant coach, midfield/offensive.
  • Adam Kingsley. Assistant coach, midfield/stoppage.
  • Xavier Clarke. VFL & Development coach, forwards.
  • Ivan Maric. Ruck coach.
  • Sam Lonergan. Development coach & VFL midfield

Yep, AT
The forward line structure and the way the ball is generally delivered into the D50 does need reworking. It ain't working this year and I'm not sure continuing down the path of bombing it in is going to be as successful this season as the past three or four years. Moving and leading forwards is certainly one way of stretching opposition defences. Forward line needs to become multi-dimensional again and not so predictable. I am sure Dimma and Clarke will see the need to implement some fresh ideas and maybe the addition of another tall. Would like to see Riewoldt do some roaming and prowling around the forward half and not be the main marking target in packs.

Correct, BT is both arrogant and ignorant, bad combo that.

Darcy, as the camera pans away to danger in the crowd, "theres danger, and he isnt far away from a return:, well 6 weeks plus Darcy, not a week or two.

BT... ( on Atkins) " gee he is in the backilne, he normally plays forward".... err been playing in the backiline all year ya fool, do some (any?) research please.

AFL has the worst commentary in all sports. They really should have a look at the set up in the EPL.
Why do we have this belief that ex players make good commentators?

Hudson, Mcavaney, the late Grybas all the best in the business and didn’t kick a ball in anger.
