Coronavirus

Yep, they’ve gone out of their way to avoid mandating mask wearing in NSW, instead using terms like “recommended” or “highly recommended”. Now they legally don’t have a leg to stand on to fine this guy who’s spread the virus around, they’re blaming people for being stupid.
I wish they’d just admit that they *smile* up. Buffoons all right
Hazzard has got a heap of self entitlement about him.

Don't forget though, Dave is in the government and as Lee keeps telling us, whatever the SloMo government says is right.

You think SoMo might advise all of Australia to drink Dettol to protect the NSW Gold Standard?

I like reading Lee's contrarian views at times. I don't often agree but that's cool. But I'm genuinely perplexed with his Covid stance. He seems so scared of the virus that he lives a hermit-like life when there is an outbreak in Melbourne. But, he's also vaccine hesitant.

This is a strange stance. I've been on four continents since March 2020 and haven't come across anyone with this view. The people I find who are most scared of the virus are the ones keenest to get jabbed. The ones who don't give a toss about the virus are the least keen to get a vaccine.

Anyway, I'm sure he's still reading the thread and hope he can return sans the abuse he's been throwing recently.

Agree 100%. Curiosity is powerful.

my take is that he will have more knowledge about the vaccines in 6-9 months time and the risk of covid infection for him in that time is lower so on an individual level the smart decision is to wait. Curse of the commons though because if everyone on az decides that though it puts opening up back in time.

I hope he can return sans abuse. Full stop. Given or received.

The dripping sarcasm and perjoratives thrown his way as well don’t reflect well on anyone.

I don’t know if I’m stuffing things up. I’ve been trying for a week to book in to get the jab. Have had to wait due to getting the flu shot and other circumstances. Everytime I try on the website to book, it says that no bookings are being taken for the Pfizer jab at the moment. All booked out and no walk ins allowed.
Is this right or am I doing something wrong?
If it’s right then it’s a bit much demanding getting the shot but not making it available

You're not doing anything wrong mate. In Vic, there's no spots for first Pfizer dose yet. Just for already made appointments and second doses.
Keep an eye on the Vic dept of health website for info as more vaccine becomes available.
Plenty of AZ out there though!

doughnut day again in VIC today. that threat from the Sydney Birthday Party/Sandringham dry cleaner appears to have almost passed. We may have got lucky (for once).

NSW premier has stuffed it. Blind Freddy could have seen it needed lockdown at 11 cases midweek!

last weekend when they had that super spreader birthday party, the limit for visitors at home in NSW was 100. The first thing Victoria does when there is a community transmission case is to limit visitors in homes. This is something we learned from 12 months ago… super spreader house parties was the beginning of the second wave.

This from NSW Health Minister Brad Hazzard, "it’s very hard to make a law against stupidity"........what a buffoon.

It should've been made compulsory months ago for limo drivers and the like to wear masks.

Health Minister Brad Hazzard said there appears to be a “small number of people who don’t comply with the expectations”, before announcing a tightening on guidelines that will kick in from 4pm today.

Is it me, or are the NSW authorities average media performers? There seems to be a tone of panic in what they say. They don’t rally create a sense of reassurance and/or calm for the community. Kerry Chant is no Brett Sutton. And Hazard lost his sh.it yesterday when he was finally asked some hard questions (probably not used to it).

Go to www.slo-mogotmine.com.au. He got his Pfizer no problems at all. He's sharing tips apparently.

Lee's problem is that

Yeah, if we didn't have Lee there would be no debate really, so I value his input for that aspect.

I think people's motivations to vax/not vax varies of course. My personal motivation is less about concern about catching covid or dying from it as much as if we are all vaccinated, vulnerable people will be more protected and life can go back to (semi) normal sooner. And I'd say many of those who don't care about getting vaxxed equally don't care about vulnerable people in society - "i'm fit and those that die usually had co-morbidities, or were old and have already lived full lives", as if that matters. I leave out the nutjobs who think it's Bill Gates and Soros, or the hardcore antivaxxers. No point even engaging those types.

His individual choice is his individual choice, up to him. The curse of the commons is a good analogy but I'd put it more strongly - Lee is a guy who was scathing about expats returning home as they were endangering lives and the economy - but refuses to acknowledge the importance of mass vaccination for the benefit of vulnerable or the economy. Or at least he grudgingly acknowledges it but then flips back to the "vax is low priority" position again. That's hypocritical.

Ok I took it as the government by its actions has made Vax a low priority.

I think silence on the impact to society of people vaccinating later.

Although we don’t know you would think it will push back opening up by months.

ScoMo's policy is to not do something that can be pinned on him from now out to the election. If the polls say most Australians want borders open, he'll open.

Wasn't long ago the Government released a media ad announcing the "agreement" to purchase more Pfizer and a Liberal party logo prominently on the page. Not sure they'll do that again in a hurry

Yeah, he was always very careful to muddy the waters as to what the official government position was and what he believed. Obfuscation is his go-to-strategy.

Anyway, he's out of the thread now so I won't waste any more time discussing his ideas.

Dr Feigl-Ding, who wrote to Prime Minister Scott Morrison earlier this week about what he called Australia’s “abysmal” vaccination rate, said Australians should be concerned.

“Australia is where India was during its surge (in terms of vaccination rates).”

He said not only had the Federal Government failed in its attempts to acquire enough vaccine doses to meet demand, but that failure was being compounded by the arrival of the Delta variant in Sydney.

“For Delta, I fear (Sydney’s lockdown) is too little too late,” he said.

“Community spread may have grown too much. Once it hits critical mass, the chance it’ll fizzle out is much harder. And the lockdown isn’t like a Wuhan style tight lockdown.”

He said he was “hopeful” the lockdown “may be enough” but thought it would be “a close call”.

Writing about the situation to more than 500,000 followers on social media, Dr Feigl-Ding said Australia also has an issue with masks.

“Further embarrassing — healthcare workers in Australia still only use mere surgical masks instead of formal high grade N95 masks in hospitals,” he wrote.

“Not even KN95 or FFP2 premium masks. This is shamefully inadequate (healthcare worker) protection for an airborne virus.”

Indonesia, a developing country of 300 million has fully vaccinated the same percentage of people as Australia has. That's not a good look for us.
