My only concern with taking someone like Gibcus is more around keeping him on the list. He won't play a lot of footy over the next 2 years so will he ask to leave? Most top 5 draftees expect to be playing AFL not VFL footy consistently within their 1st 2 years, I don't see that happening with him.

With Tarrant, Balta and Grimes playing tall back there isn't any space for him, unless we are wanting to move Balta up the ground?
Not sure about that. Tarrant and Grimes are no spring chickens. They might not get through an entire season. He will play.
Then you have a decade of Gibcus / Balta combination.

Seems there’s a view (not saying it’s mine) that intercepting defenders aren’t as hard to find or develop as other positions generating primo outcomes are, and that you shouldn’t go too high with them in the Draft. Think this is why Gibcus is sliding in many rankings. Dunno.

What did Sam Taylor go at ? 27 or something ?
Very good ones are hard to find. And ones that can play on talls when needed. The only 2 elite ones in the AFL are Grimes and Lever. Probably McGovern before he became fat.

just watched Qld V Tassie U19.

player that caught my eye was Ollie Davis Tassy onballer No.3.

very Trent Cotchin. hunts the ball through congestion. tackles hard. gets better the longer the game goes on and the closer it gets.

think you'll get a look at him Allies V S.A next week?

rookie prospect.

16 disposals and 6 tackles from 12 games in the SANFL this year.

bit of a Mansell pathway.

So is there a big upgrade in talent between pick pick 3 or 4 and 7 and 8
No,as if a full season had been played, guys like Sonsie,Finn and more would of dis placed Callaghan on performances alone,u really want as many picks in top 30 this year as u could easily get a top 10 pick at 27 just from lack of games.

Was a couple of champs in that draft and then pretty much SFA , has to be close to worst draft ever, basically after Lewis at 7 , I think the only good /handy players after that we’re Le cras , Morton , Polo and Mcguane
Took the words out of my mouth, just nobody there to select.

So if we get pick3 effectively pick 5

Darcy, Daicos, Callaghan, Horne all gone

We get to choose Ward, Gibcus,

Ward better be good.

Doedee? pick 17.
Sam Taylor. pick 28 in a draft with heaps of talls.

I'm with you SA, its an important position to fill, its crucial for a flag winning side.
Takes over Grimes spot in 2 years, so will get to play 5-10 games each year.
Balta - Gibcus locked in

Grimes was a PSD. McGovern pick 44. Lever 14. Taylor pick 28.

You can see why clubs would look at that intercept role or player a bit later.

We are all assuming we are trying to get pick 3 for one of the high end midfielders or could we simply be doing this to get Gibcus?

For me I would be choosing Gibcus.

first mark in the highlights, against the Geelold magolds is coming in sideways in front of/over Darcy Foot - their 7 foot ruck doofus.
Serious impressive mark.

Grimes was too long ago to use as an example. Clubs didnt know appreciate the role.
Think Josh Gibson as demonstrating how that interceptor helps win flags

You’re validating the point. If Grimes can be selected in the PSD years ago and then be trained into an intercepting defender, that tells you that you don’t have to be a ready made one right now, high in the Draft order. Your validating the outlook clubs seem to have.

What do reckon the club considers its biggest need: quality on ballers, KPF’s or an intercepting defender ?

i think the knock on Ollie Davis is leg speed.
Was available last year, tested at last year's combine a 3.11s

No brainer IMO. Engine room clearly. Quality mids for both 1st round picks.

Its a tough call. We need them all.
With KPF i reckon you only pick the cream of the crop, not the best for that year. So some years its not worth picking a tall.

The onballer needs to become elite starting mid. We have future depth mids but need that future superstar.
I like Ward and Sonsie.
Think we will get a good one at 7

yeah that'd do it TD.

It was only a class 6 field today, but his contested work was outstanding. horizontal attack on man and ball.

just like you know who.

definitely in the rookie bracket

out of interest, anyone know what Cotch did 20m in as a kid?

edit: found it 3.07

speed is integral to success.
But so is intent
And reaction time to know where the footy is going before the oppo.
