2021 Draft Thread

Hobbs at 7
Sonsie at 15
Taylor at 26
Long at 28

Midfield set for the next 10 years.

Good selections but I reckon with Long you would be able to get him in the 30's to 40's, what's your view on Knevitt? another tall mid who's expected to go in the mid to late 20's

Mitch Knevitt (Geelong Falcons/Vic Country)

Midfielder, 193cm, 81kg

A hulking inside midfielder, Knevitt wins contested ball in congestion and can haul in marks with his strong hands overhead. The Falcons prospect dominated in his final three NAB League games, averaging 30.3 disposals, 14.7 contested possessions and 6.3 marks.

Dan says: Ranking points hauls of 151, 136 and 165 to close out the season. A great size and showed he can be a marking presence up forward.

Jordan says: If he can put it together as a tall midfielder, he could prove very hard to stop around the ground.

Plenty of healthy debate going on here but here's my two cents, I'll try to be as succinct as possible.

* This is a midfielders draft so it would pay to play to those strengths. We didn't pick Sam Taylor but that doesn't mean we get a similar type with a pick in the top 10. That isn't maximising our draft hand.

* With four premium picks you can model an entire engine room, a ten year plan so to speak. A blend of taller mids, crafty mids & inside bulls would be preferable. The guys I'm talking about include Johnson, Hobbs, Goater, Sonsie, Butler, Taylor & Ward.

* I would go with the taller mids first & then pick off some medium sized mids further down the draft, it's one reason I'm inclined to take Johnson over Hobbs. I think Hobbs makes an early impact and then gets passed by Johnson at the 3 year mark.

* People are waxing lyrical about Gibcus but there's a bloke called Goater who has better a better vertical leap, an elite sprint time and a proven track record is multiple positions. I am struggling to see how Gibcus is worth pick 7 but Goater isn't worth pick 15 (according to some posters).

* If we are intent on bringing in a tall then by all means grab van Rooyen but if pick 15 is the price then accept that he may only wind up being a KPD. Why? Because the key forwards littering the competition are generally taller, have a better leap & possess a few more tricks.

Play the percentages and we get four core players who will be impacting games as early as next year. Go down the route of Gibcus/van Rooyen and we are looking at 3-4 years of development time with no guarantees they will premiership quality players when the dust settles.

I would much rather nail down the engine room whilst we have this rare opportunity, the composition of which can be moulded to suit our vision of the future. My take on the next few years is bringing in guys who can match it with the Bont/Macrae/Oliver/Petracca types. Some might say there's no hope you will find the next A class mid in this batch, maybe that's true, but if you select players with solid floors then the collateral damage of failure won't be catastrophic.
Sent a resume to Punt Road yet? If not plz do so ASAP

After seeing a possible top 20 from 2022 draft, there is a shhiittload of talls.
So don't need to take a tall that's a dud in 2021.
IMO this gives us our strategy for the next 2 drafts, mids this yr, talls next yr. Use our later picks (unused picks this yr) for future picks. Nail these 2 drafts & we are set up for a decade.

Miami style bling bling
Can someone explain why North will not bid on Daicos or even Darcy? Even if they prefer Horne-Francis, the Pies are committed to taking Daicos (are the Bulldogs are committed to taking Darcy too?) so why not make them pay the maximum price? What incentive is there to help out two opposition clubs?

Geelold Falcons kid. For some strange reason we very rarely ever go near any of them.

P.S on Gibcus a poster on BF says he was chatting to a Coach of Gibcus at work today & he told him he'd played fwd/ruck until he got to the team he plays for now & they turned him into a KPD.
#6 Josh Gibcus
GWV Rebels/Vic Country | Tall Defender
4/04/2003 | 195cm | 84kg
September Ranking: #6
Snapshot:
An intercept marking defender who reads the play well and has a sizeable leap, Gibcus’ eye-catching form has propelled him into top 10 calculations. Once again, Gibcus is the second tall prospect on our list and has earned his spot with superb form this year. The Greater Western Victoria (GWV) defender is an intercept type who uses his strengths to advantage; reading the play beautifully and timing his movements to float onto the scene, before rising with his springy vertical leap to take series of marks and force turnovers. While he is working on his ground level game, Gibcus is so clean in the air and usually a sound distributor across the last line, showing great composure on the ball. He was one of the many AFL Academy call-ups and truly held his own in that fixture, and will continue to improve at a great rate.
Last month:
With no football to be played in Victoria, Gibcus has featured among the waiting game but got a taste of competition at last week’s Country combine in Bendigo. He was typically astute in the jumping tests, producing a combine best result in the running vertical jump (89cm). As the leading tall defender available in this year’s crop, the Rebels product will be highly sought after among the top 10.

Yeah I mentioned this a few pages back. Gibcus played CHF as a junior for East Point I think it was in the BFL. He’s also been spun forward a couple of times this year for the Rebels.

How do you rate Ned Long's kicking?
BH I wont profess to be an expert, but from very limited I have seen there is no issue. Very few kids picked in the 2nd round will have Jarman like footskills. I look for the strengths in a player first and foremost. This kid hits the scoreboard. That mid-forward type of player are gold in todays football. Can go into the midfield then drifts forward are the players opposition coaches hate to plan against. At 192cm and 88 kgs that a decent size. He might need to trim down a touch but that will come in time once he is in a professional environment. Almost identical in body shape to Cripps.

And has a tank judging from his 2klm time trial.
If he has a turn of pace he would be a pretty handy prospect

I still can't get my head around Gws taking Andrew with their pick, and l really really hope he doesn't get to us ,no project player's .
I think Goater will be gone before 15,l think the Bombers will take him.

If Connor Macdonald got to us in the second round it would be a steal IMO,has all the attributes to be a top mid,he has pace ,his kicking is good ,good overhead ,get's the contested ball and tackles, and his work rate is very very good,,l must be missing something with him.

I hope the site that must not be named doesn't leave it to a week out from the draft to get the draft hub up and running this year. surely it'll be easier to get all the highlights together given limited game time

I am not uncomfortable with trying to trade up for another first rounder. Trading the later picks into 2022. This year only going with 3 picks and maybe 2 carry over to test a couple of others for March. Having a range of options for 2022 gives us a good idea where the last 2 years draftees who have had limited development are, also giving plenty of options of having strong hand next year.

Unfortunately, as it stands right now Poking Faces, I’m not sure we’ll get access to Hobbs. Not completely out of the question, but unlikely I reckon. Ditto Ward.
So, that makes the first selection critical, what's you opening gambit Redford? Tall mid or medium mid with the first?

If we managed to sneak another pick in the top 20 then I would consider trading both twenties picks, think it sets us up for a slider.
